Are you interested in a career in the field of linguistics and translation? Did you know that working in this field can provide you with opportunities to apply your own experience from another area and work with experts in a range of subjects? Working in this field opens the door to so many professional experiences that you might not have even considered! Read on for an example!
Dr. Rosario Gomez, professor and head of Linguistics in the School of Languages and Literatures and Dr. Gary Umphrey, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, recently collaborated to translate classic 19th-century Spanish novella Aventura de las hormigas into English - the translated work is called Ants: A Tale of Formic Proportions. This story, viewed through the lens of an ant, explores society and human nature in a uniquely imaginative way.
Reflecting on the project, Dr. Gomez shares, โItโs incredible how much you learn about both the target and your own language, as well as the subject of the translation itself. Itโs a truly rewarding experience for anyone passionate about learning.โ
If you're interested in learning more about Spanish translation, check out Dr. Gomezโs course, SPAN*4500: Spanish Translation, on WebAdvisor!
