Our Story

About Sage & Balm:

Sage & Balm is a local business serving the South-Western Ontario region which specializes in providing high-quality vintage, modern, and antique furniture and home decor all re-finished, restored, or up-cycled by hand with love and great attention to detail! Sage & Balm also provides beautiful fine art photography prints available in many sizes and print finishes such as canvas, metal panels, acrylic mounts, and a variety of fine art papers.

Many items are made available for purchase directly through the Sage & Balm Etsy shop (Etsy.com/SageandBalmInteriors) or on the photography website (sageandbalm.com) as they become available. Furniture and photography prints are also for sale via vending opportunities (these are advertised in advance), or via custom orders.

Info about custom orders:

Custom orders for furniture refinishing, furniture consultations, or photography prints, or for home staging rentals are welcomed, and quotes are available via Facebook private messaging, email, or by phone (see below for contact details).

Custom furniture orders are designed to put the ball in your court so you can revive a piece of furniture exactly to your specifications. A consultation and quote can help to shed light on what may look best in your home or for a particular piece. There are very few creative limits on what can be done in terms of refinishing: in other words, creativity and innovation are most welcome!
With a custom furniture order, you can choose to be involved as much or as little as you'd like, and progress and decisions can be shared during the process to ensure your satisfaction with the final result.

Refinishing options available:

Sage & Balm may use the following techniques to achieve the look you want:
painting, sanding, staining (water-based, oil-based, alcohol-based or gel), gilding (any metalic finish), photo-transfer, image transfer/decoupage, tint-washing, hand-painting, stencilling, the addition of wooden/metal decals, antique glazing, simple distressing or other wear & tear techniques including layered distressing, chipped paint, and dark antiquing waxes (tinted to any colour).

**Customers may also request a sealant of their choice to meet a specific need. For example, if a piece destined for a bathroom needs to be made scrubbable, more water-tight, and resistant to mildew, a particular sealant may be used to meet those ends.

***In the event that a piece is destined for repurpose, more construction/decontruction or repair may be needed (ie: turning single chairs into a bench, or constructing a bathroom sink vanity from an existing chest of drawers).

Pieces that qualify for custom refinishing:

Sage & Balm will accept pieces for custom refinishing or restoration so long as they are in repairable order (not a lost cause beyond repair, unless arranged in person), and not a valuable true antique which is destined to be sold through a reputable antiques dealer following refinishing.

Any piece of furniture that you already own, find through a thrift store/garage sale/onine as a second-hand piece, find on the side of the road, inherit from a family member, etc., are acceptable. Brand new items are also acceptable.
(Sage & Balm will not accept furniture orders or photography orders that are intended to be re-sold for profit once finished as that is an infringement upon intellectual property.)

Sage & Balm will also take on custom orders that include a search for a specific item or style of furniture, based on the arrangements made with a customer. For example: Anne would like a dining room buffet/sideboard finished in a blue colour with gilding and a distressed/worn finish. She needs something that fits the 48" dimensions of the space, and wants something that has ornate woodworking and lots of storage. Sage & Balm will seek out a piece that fits those specifications and complete the refinishing to give Anne the final look and function that best matches her request. The costs of hunting down and retriving a specific item are folded into the final item fee under "labour and materials".

Quotes:

Quotes will be based on the estimated overall finished value of the furniture item and will be determined by accounting for refinishing costs, material costs, labour and any transporation costs (if applicable). Quotes are meant to give a close estimate to the final cost; however, some things during the refinishing process are subject to change. Any change in the process that contributes significantly to the overall price will be discussed with the customer in advance.
