This weekend – a needed Guelph citizen-led initiative to help us chart our way through this growing crisis. This country's governments are in denial about how serious the threat of global heating is to our health, security, and survival.
The world's forests are burning. The coral is bleaching. The oceans are hot. And Big Oil CEOs are reaping record profits from irrevocable damage – current and future – to the planet that our children will inherit.
But we can keep this from getting worse. We are trying to figure this out together. There's no time to lose.
Let's do this.
This book was an all-Guelph affair, with author Rachel Salt and illustrator Nick Craine. It's a solid, engaging look at our planetary crisis geared to the people who will inherit our mess.
I received an email asking about this case study that was commissioned by RGD back in 2014. With a redesign of their site, it was no longer online, so I posted it to my website. This is a detailed examination of the process that went into designing the packaging for Planet Bean Coffee — still being used a decade later!
Planet Bean Coffee I crafted this coffee packaging design and text to position the co-op as fun and progressive. Nine months later, sales had increased.
I'm pumped to have helped out the Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) with their promotion for this year's Knights Fest, which included a fun new logo! This Family Day – a great event for your kids! https://gymc.ca/events/medieval-family-day-festival/
Have you ever wondered what goes into designing a book cover? I answered some questions about The Singularity, a new Canadian edition of the novel by Swedish author Balsam Karam. How could I use same the illustration as other editions and make it stand out? https://alllitup.ca/beautiful-books-the-singularity/
Peace and goodwill: It's a radical wish, when we look at the world we actually live in.
So here goes: I wish peace and goodwill to you and your circles of family, friends and communities for the holidays and the year ahead.
This year, I've been part of the successful campaign for Greenbelt West Coalition to reverse the Ford’s Greenbelt development land grab. I designed lawn signs, posters, social media graphics, and logos, as well as directing a short video.
Greenbelt West Coalition Doug Ford said, “Unequivocally, we won’t touch the Greenbelt.” Then, in 2022, he “touched” the Greenbelt, Ontarians rallied and forced him to keep his hands off—for now.
I gain design inspiration from brilliant typographers all around the world – case in point, the aptly named Wonder, a modern font that delivers nostalgia and a feeling of friendly open-mindedness. I used Wonder (designed by Finnish foundry Fenotype) for this short book introducing kids Lichens, a fascinating and complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga.
The Secret World of Lichens This fun children’s book features a new Finish font called Wonder.
Doug’s buddies: $8.3 billion richer no more!
Inspired by the Kitchener Fordfest protest a few weeks ago, I designed this ”Greedbelt” graphic and was waiting to send it into the world until I could photograph a Greenbelt road sign on which to photoshop it — and then Ford caved. I'm posting this anyway, for the alternate reality in which Ford dug his heels in a little longer. Or for our own future, when I hope we won't need it.
Gosh, words fail! Except, I have no idea what Panettone isI 💚💙🧡
Gareth Lind goes on about aspect ratios, ligatures, and ragged edges, RBG, CMYK, and PMS, vectors, vertices, and swashes, and through it all, we listen politely. But there are days when we mix up the word Panettone (yum) for Pantone, wonder what he means by PMS (“did he really say that?” we whisper), and confuse foreground and middle ground. He notices. We weigh in on his creative designs—all six of us—and then we go all changeable in our opinions three seconds later. He notices that, too. In spite of all of this, he works so hard, so fast, so brilliantly for us, staying up half the night to get a project done and picking up all our dropped balls. We notice. Thank you, Gareth. We love that you tolerate us. We love that you beautify us. And we also just love you. 💚
You're very welcome Hillside! ✌️💚🤘

I hand-drew a new iteration of the Guelph Film Festival logo, as well as this year's poster. Thanks to Cai Sepulis - Ballyhoo Media for the original logo, which continues to rock, and Kimber Sider for the encouragement to roughen and tumble.
With a rigorous mathematical skeleton, The Absence of Zero is a triumphantly executed celebration of the long poem tradition, an elegy to the 20th century. It demanded a similar rigour on the cover, so I superimposed a grid of circles onto an image of television static, allowing it to shine through in varying degrees in the title text. This grid defines the design of the whole book.

I drew/designed this icon to promote Guelph – a fun project to convey Guelph's charms (and a great deal for visitors!)

Our community rocks! As part of my graphic design role at Hillside Festival, I created this series of graphics to encourage fundraising and track the results. In less than a week, we went from our starting point of $10,000 to our goal of $25,000 – erasing the deficit from this year's and putting the festival on solid footing to offer a live festival next year, assuming public health allows it. Many, many thanks!
