A small business owner needs to know and recognize what type of expenses can be claimed against the profit to reduce tax, and what can’t be. Separating business and personal finances makes it easier to monitor a company's cash flow and reduce accounting errors.

1. An expense that is directly related to the operation of the business and towards producing income is usually tax deductible.

2. An expense that is for the owner’s personal pleasure is not.

A good practice, if not on payroll, is to transfer an amount on a regular basis from the business account into a personal account, from owners drawing to buy groceries, books, toys etc. This helps the business account to be nice and tidy with only business transactions. This will also avoid the temptation to allocate a private expense to the business.

All new businesses should make it a priority to open a business bank account, preferably one with on-line access and keep their personal expenses separate. Additionally, opening a savings business account to set aside money from your business earnings every month to pay quarterly taxes will save you time, effort and a lot of headaches when balancing your books.

Tax deadline is fast approaching for all self-employed businesses. If you are a general business, offer professional services or work for commission your tax deadline is June 15th!

As announced in Budget 2021, A new form, T1B, Request to Deduct Federal COVID-19 Benefits Repayment in a Prior Year, will be available for the 2022 tax year to allow an individual to claim a deduction for the overpayment of federal COVID-19 benefits received in 2020 or 2021 that were repaid in 2022. If an Individual received CERB, CESB, CRB, CRSB, or CRCB from the CRA, the amount repaid will be reported in box 201 of their T4A slip. If an individual received CERB from Service Canada, the amount repaid will be reported on their T4E slip along with other amounts repaid. Service Canada will send your client a letter showing the amount of CERB they repaid. T4A and T4E slips will be sent to individuals and available in My Account by the end of February 2023.
