Excited to see new stuff from our friends in Tactus!
We know what you might be thinking. And yes, The Last Atlas is “Part II” of, or at least a thematic successor to Glass Atlas. How did this come to be? Let’s take you back seven years.
As we were finishing our album Bending Light, we were so hyped up with creative energy from the process that we quickly wrote more material for a second album. Not long after the release, we had wound up with a four-track concept record with a complex story that played out in reverse, where the first track was actually the ending and vice versa. It was tentatively called For The Time Being, which started as an inside joke about an entity called The Time Being, and turned into an episodic journey of shared experiences across time and different versions of the self.
We wanted to push ourselves with our production skills in hopes of being able to self-produce our next album from the ground up - but we wanted to tackle something smaller before diving into another album. We took some bits and pieces that didn’t quite make it into the Album 2 material, and created Glass Atlas as a prequel to the album - it features some musical references to the songs, and the lyrics introduce the album’s theme of being in touch with different versions of yourself.
So what happened to Album 2? Maybe the project was too ambitious, maybe too much life got in the way, maybe both. But whenever we’ve been able to make music together since then, we’ve opted for smaller bite-sized projects with the time we were afforded (Fade, Summits, remixes etc).
It’s been long enough now that we understand that the time to make that album has passed, and that it’s time to close the book on that chapter of our career and move on to new material. But we love the songs so deeply that we can’t just let it go. The Last Atlas would have been track one of Album 2 (although under a different name, and with different lyrics). We wanted to keep Glass and Last connected lyrically since they are blatantly linked musically, so Last also features a story about being in touch with different parts of the self, and borrows some lines from Glass. Also, since this is end-capping a chapter for us and marking a decade since our first release, Ridges, we thought it would be fun to make it exactly 10 minutes long and to fill it with Tactus easter eggs.
Will you ever hear the other stuff that was going to be on Album 2? Maybe someday. For the time being, we will at least be releasing a Bandcamp exclusive version of The Last Atlas that features some Album 2 Guitar Pro demos, a writeup of the story, and some other goodies.
We hope you enjoy The Last Atlas (and whatever comes next). We are unbelievably excited to show it to you.
