When it comes to keeping cancer away for good, it’s important to be picky about what you put in your body so as to not encourage cancer to start or grow.

And when it comes to coffee☕, there are a few guidelines you’ll want to follow so as to reduce any cancer risk. Let me outline 4️⃣ here for you.

1️⃣ First, look for a coffee that is organic.
👉Coffee crops are typically heavily sprayed with pesticides that get brewed in the pot and then can stew in your body, potentially accumulating over time and lead to cancerous changes.

2️⃣ Second, look for a coffee that has tested negative by a third party for mold.
👉Mold and mycotoxins may have the ability to encourage cancer-causing processes, as well as dampen the immune response, our main defense against cancer.

3️⃣ Third, if you’re sensitive to caffeine, it’s probably best to look for coffee alternatives or reach for decaf.
👉If you’re going to have decaf, look for Swiss water decaf, which means the method by which the caffeine has been removed was without any chemicals, such as solvents.

4️⃣ Fourth, very importantly, practice good coffee hygiene.
👉Don’t have coffee on an empty stomach - messes with blood sugar
👉 Have coffee 1+ hours after waking so doesn't interfere with cortisol awakening response
👉Don’t consume caffeine less than 10 hrs before bed - can stay in system
👉Enjoy coffee without added sugar

Overall, when you drink coffee that is free of pesticides, mold, solvents, and pay attention to your coffee hygiene, coffee can be a rich source of antioxidants, which have cancer-fighting properties.

A common goal for our clients in The Roadmap To Recovery is to lose weight, whether it’s less than 10 or 30+ lbs. These women recognize that it’s super important to have a healthy weight to reduce the risk of cancer coming back.

But there are a lot of struggles that come along with trying to reduce weight after a cancer diagnosis.

Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy all can impact the bones and lead to osteoporosis.

Even after treatment is done, it’s important to stay on top of your health. Some might say that after treatment is when the real work begins.

Rebuilding damaged tissue, improving energy, reducing inflammation, and helping to ensure cancer doesn’t come back.

AND making sure your bones get nice and strong is going to be important too.

👉 Here are some very important steps to make strong bones.

Step 1️⃣ - Calcium! But don’t go just taking a calcium supplement. You first need to understand what your daily calcium intake is, and then supplement the difference. Calcium can increase one’s risk for heart disease and stroke if you take too much or take it without magnesium. Use a calculator like at Osteoporosis Canada or the International Osteoporosis Foundation. Combine calcium in supplements with magnesium.

Step 2️⃣ - Vitamin D! You MUST know your blood levels. Step 3️⃣ - Build muscle! This protects the bones from breaking and provides something like a “cushion”.

Step 4️⃣ - Supporting nutrients! Vitamin K, boron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium are all important building blocks of bones. It’s best to get these from your diet (lots of veggies)

Step 5️⃣ - Get enough protein! This helps to build healthy bones and healthy muscles to support the bones

And in case you’ve ever heard of coffee diminishing bone health - that’s more of an old legend and has no solid human data.

Swapping out white sugar for maple syrup or stevia. Avoiding all sugar, even in berries. Eating organic over non-organic. Handfuls of supplements that are “anticancer”. Trending diets.

None of these are actual strategies for keeping cancer from coming back and it’s putting the focus on less-proven, micro-changes that will distract you instead of moving the needle toward creating an environment in the body where cancer doesn’t want to be. ✨

Cancer-blocking supplements - what to look for?

Well, there are many ways that supplements can support you when it comes to blocking cancer from coming back! However, I too often see women taking handfuls of the wrong supplements that aren’t going to do a thing.

Why? Because there is soooooo much hype and sooooo much marketing put into trying to get you to buy this, that, or the other supplement based on exaggerated claims…and not enough emphasis is put on what does YOUR body need and what does the RESEARCH say.

When it comes down to it, there isn’t a lot of human research out there on supplements, so as holistic clinicians, we end up looking at what has the strongest evidence, what are the pathways that cancer can be stopped, and seeing how it best applies to your needs.

What contributes to cancer coming back?

I have to say that it all comes down to INFLAMMATION.
Addressing cancer-promoting inflammation is crucial because chronic inflammation can create a fertile ground for cancer to develop and thrive.

When the body's inflammatory response is drawn out or heightened, it can lead to cell damage and DNA mutations, fostering an environment conducive to cancer starting and growing.

By managing and reducing inflammation, you help to block cancer AND you help your body to feel better. Tackling anxiety, hot flashes, pain, heart issues, and pesky weight gain.

The thing is inflammation is rarely caused by just one thing, we need to come at it from many angles, and that’s what I’ll teach you about in my newest blog post!

4 Cancer MYTHS That Every Survivor Needs To Know

I don't know 'bout you, but I've had it up to my ears with the bad advice and opinions of "experts" that are being passed off as fact.

Here are 4 of them:

1️⃣ You can’t eat meat if you want to stop cancer
2️⃣ Soy is unsafe in HR+ breast cancer
3️⃣ Just wait and you’ll feel better with time
4️⃣ There’s nothing you can do to keep cancer away

Now, I'm all about using the research to guide our anticancer plan AND using a holistic spin.

(Ex. a supplement that shows only theoretical outcomes in the literature but is safe and has potential...and is only added after we have addressed the harder hitting research-solid changes)

But too often cancer thrivers are being misdirected by gurus and natural experts who just don't have a clue how the body works and how to critically analyze the research.

This means that these women after cancer are...

>> wasting their time and limited energy on what isn't going to help bc someone else said it cured them (heads up! You're unique) or because it was marketed to them on FB

>> spending hours trying to sift through and interpret the info they've come across to find out if it's actually "fact"

Just a reminder that you are UNIQUE when it comes to keeping cancer from coming back.

What worked for the retired woman on the internet isn’t going to be the same plan for the working mom.

For many reasons, but here are three:

1️⃣ Your health history is different. Even if you had the same diagnosis and/or treatment as someone, you had a different experience growing up. You have been exposed to different things. You have different cultures, taste preferences, genetics…
2️⃣ Your schedules are different. You can’t quit being a mom or your job to become a full-time cancer stopper. Or if you’re a retiree, you may have more time, but it also shouldn’t ALL be dedicated to keeping cancer away. You need to enjoy your time too.
3️⃣ Your responsibilities are different. Who you’re taking care of, besides yourself, is different.

Despite conventional medicine being all about targeting the CANCER (which means all treatments will look the same).

Keeping cancer away should be about treating YOU. The environment in your body (which means all treatments will look different).

The more we look at:
👉 Taste preferences
👉 Schedules
👉 Epigenetics
👉 Gut health
👉 Blood work
👉 Cultural needs, etc

The more the plan is built around you, the more likely it is to stick. The more likely it is to work to keep cancer from coming back.

Although I encourage following conventional screening protocols, waiting until cancer comes back on a follow-up scan is not a plan.

Don’t let any doctor tell you that there is nothing you can do to keep cancer from coming back. There is so much scientific research on strategies to help block cancer, it’s mind-blowing!

Pam was…angry.

Frustrated. Overwhelmed.

She was in her last rounds of radiation, feeling ok but not as good as before cancer.

And she was working and being a mom. But also felt like she was the only one on her healthcare team that cared about “what’s next?” No strong answers were coming her way about how to stay in remission.

And she didn’t want to be sick again. She had her kids to think about.

She was attempting a clean diet. But wasn’t certain it was right.

Being done cancer treatment, whether it was surgery, radiation, chemo, or immunotherapy, is a HUGE accomplishment 💙

You were dragged over hot coals and put through the spin cycle a couple dozen times. Mentally and/or physically.

You were certainly beat up and then once the cancer was said to be gone, you were left on your own to heal!

Kind of as if Mike Tyson gave you the one-two punch, you dropped to the ring floor, and then your coach left you so you’re trying to pick yourself up and get farrrrr away from Mr Tyson so he doesn’t have the chance to do that again!

The problem is that the fatigue, anxiety, and overall consequences of treatment can end up permanent…unless you do something about it.

And you may be thinking, “why did I work so hard and go through so much to be cancer-free and to LIVE only to not be able to enjoy my life?”

Now, stop right there with those thoughts, because I have something to tell you.

You CAN heal after cancer. You CAN feel great again. You CAN make changes to guide your future.

Will it take some time? Yes, especially if you don’t go about it the right way.

The best diet for YOU to keep cancer from coming back?

As a cancer-focused Naturopathic Doctor, here are the foundations of what my team and I look at to determine the BEST NUTRITION PLAN for our clients:

1️⃣ Research - What eating habits and/or foods consistently show the best outcomes when it comes to keeping cancer away (or not getting cancer in the first place as most cancer prevention research is done on primary cancer prevention)?

2️⃣ Epigenetics - How does your body interact and process things? Can you make anti-inflammatory omega-3s from plant sources? Do you have difficulty producing antioxidants in your body? Are carbs hard for you to process? Do you need extra support with making/absorbing iron, B12, D, & phosphatidylcholine and likely will do well with some animal products (the main source of these nutrients)?

3️⃣ Blood work - What are your blood sugar and cholesterol levels? How is your iron? What do your inflammatory levels look like? Are you low on calcium, D, magnesium, etc.?

4️⃣ Taste buds - Do you really hate some foods? Do you really love some foods? Do you need to make meals your whole family will enjoy?

5️⃣ Schedule - Are you super busy most of the week and need quick meals? Do you enjoy the kitchen?

6️⃣ How do you feel - When you eat certain foods? Exclude certain foods? How are you feeling after treatment? During treatment?

7️⃣ Cancer type - Are there specific foods that have been shown to reduce cancer risk based on your specific cancer diagnosis?

Notice how making nutrition choices based on your cancer type is LAST on the list? That’s because it is the LEAST important (despite most people focusing their attention here!).
