Lots of good news/bad news with the option for first time home buyers to get a 30 year mortgage for new home construction.

The good news is that in our region, although our new home construction pricing has increased much more than we'd prefer, we can still build many terrific home styles for first time home buyers well under the million dollar limit in the program.

This might push some first time home buyers who were on the cusp of being able to afford a home more comfortably into home ownership.

It's important to remember that when home prices, mortgage rates and interest rates are discussed in the media, the facts and figures noted are almost always related to larger markets across the country and rarely accurately represent what's happening on the ground here in Nova Scotia.

New 30-year mortgages are coming and the devil’s in the details As of Aug. 1, first-time homebuyers purchasing a newly built home for less than $1-million with a down payment smaller than 20 per cent will be able to opt in to an insured 30-year amortization period – up from a 25-year maximum
