Weekend In Vegas - from their new EP Puttin' On A Show, is a sprawling space-funk odyssey.

Lavish synths and Nile Rodgers-on-a-twelve-string style guitars sit atop a bedrock of filthy basslines and no-nonsense 70’s drums.

The song starts with a slow and ominously spacey riff that sets us in a tacky Las Vegas wedding chapel, where we stand at the altar with Elvis. “You didn’t plan this, you were just having fun. It was a Weekend in Vegas, what have you done?”

After a brief sonic breakdown of electronic noise familiar to those who grew up with dial-up, we are plunged into a new, upbeat groove. “A Weekend in Vegas, Honeymoon in Debert. Wouldn’t you know I put it all on red, and I lost my shirt.”

The protagonist has accepted their fate, and is ready to party.
The Brood sees us out as the song fades into the desert horizon, synthesizer and guitar melodies dancing over the groove.

Dark and quirky songs that float along like scenes from a night’s dream. Lynchian vibes at the discotheque. Intricate musical interplay, but over a beat you can groove to.

The band’s musical recipe is thus: equal parts vocals, keyboards, bass, guitar and drums, interlocking in an electric dixieland tapestry with nods to new wave, disco, psychedelia and grunge. Like a Long Island Iced Tea, there’s a lot going on but it goes down smooth.

After a worldwide pandemic, several lockdowns, an ongoing (and escalating) housing crisis, and economic ruin, The Brood has at last emerged with their new single and music video, Puttin’ On A Show.

Filmed on a custom-built set within the walls of Halifax’s legendary music venue, The Marquee Ballroom, (where else would it be) Puttin’ On A Show is a cinematic and musical tour de force. Directed by Jeff Miller and Charlie Benoit who worked with The Brood on their music video “Munchies” in 2017.

The Brood’s latest EP Puttin’ On A Show (Available on SEAYOU ENTERTAINMENT December 2nd) has been a long time coming. From rehearsing the tunes at Danny’s barn in Dartmouth, to recording them at The Old Confidence Lodge in La Have, to shooting the video during one of many grueling lockdowns, the process has been a real adventure.

Puttin’ On A Show is The Brood’s most epic track yet. At six and a half minutes, the song encompasses all the styles, moods and lyrical themes that the band have been exploring over their ‘eXistenZ.’ Sweeping synthesizer chords and pastoral guitar soon give way to an all-out euphoria of funk that showcases the band and its dynamite rhythm section at the peak of its powers.

We worked with a lot of talented artists and technicians in our little corner of the world here in the Maritimes, and it means so much to finally share this music and video with you.
