See you in 2023!
Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at Halifax Public Libraries Central Library last night for our FILM 1 Screening! It was a true blast to get together and celebrate these brand new works from 12 exciting new filmmakers.
We at AFCOOP were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Lifetime Member Mark Simkins. Mark was a longtime and active member of the AFCOOP and Nova Scotia film communities, and was a fixture at AFCOOP for decades, serving on the board, leading many workshops, and serving as one of our past technical coordinators.
Mark's varied film career saw him working particularly in the camera department, as both a camera assistant and cinematographer, as well as an electrician. Mark had also been working on a number of writing projects in recent years, and was a regular attendee at HIFF and other AFCOOP events, taking stills, and always ready with a kind or encouraging word. He also held a wealth of knowledge about AFCOOP's past, and many of us loved to listen to his stories about the "early days" at the co-op. Mark will be sorely missed and everyone at AFCOOP extends their condolences to Mark's friends and family.

One of this year's new FILM 5 teams unfortunately had to withdraw, but we are pleased to welcome the REMNANTS team into the program. Congratulations to Barrett Hooper (writer/director) and Kate Devlin (producer)!

LOVE, PEACE & HAIRGREASE: THE MUSICAL!
OCTOBER 21 - 30, ALDERNEY LANDING THEATRE
We couldn't be more excited to announce our 2022 Mainstage Production, a co-production with Charles Taylor Theatre & Media Arts Association, and the world premiere of the new musical from East Preston's own Tara L. Taylor! Our entirely Atlantic Canadian cast and crew go into rehearsals next week and we're looking forward to having the music stuck in our heads for the next few months!
LOVE, PEACE & HAIRGREASE is a play about love and transformation that celebrates afro-textured hair, old and new thoughts and techniques. When Lauren Johnson takes over the legacy of her grandmothers’ salon and renames it Love, Piece and Hairgrease (an Ebonics term meaning “bye”) the venture comes at a great personal cost. When they told her she couldn’t, she did it anyway. How does one find love and peace in the midst of hairgrease life storms? Say bye to fear, old habits, wigs, weaves, and stressed HAIR!
Tickets are on sale now via our brand new website, designed by our very own Daniel Wittnebel!
