Nicholas Fudge Architects
NFA’s projects are site-specific, taking into account view planes, natural light, and surroundings.
Nicholas employs a regionalist approach to design, focusing on a seamless integration of building and landscape. He believes that good modern architecture should coexist in harmony with its environment. In addition to being principal at Nicholas Fudge Architects, he is also co-founder and partner in East Coast Modern, which specializes in architecturally designed prefab dwellings.
We were very happy to be a part of and had paint this amazing mural on our office wall. It was very cool to see his process from start to finish and to get to help beautify Halifax’s north end and support local artists in the process.
Indoor outdoor living at the Surf Shack. The hot tub is seamlessly integrated into the infinity pool while the double-sided board-form concrete fireplace provides ambiance both inside and out.

Big shout out to Evan Hoyles, who was the project architect, and the rest of the design team and all involved, including our client, who has been an absolute joy to work with.

One of the main design drivers for our practice is the surrounding environment, and more often than not, is simply just taking advantage of the views.

Three Black Shacks. South Shore, Nova Scotia.

Two of the three black shacks we designed a few years back, located on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. These simple monolithic forms that are reminiscent of the old fish shacks found scattered along our coastline stand the test of time.

We’ve been enjoying incorporating courtyards into many of our projects recently. This home consists of three wings which frame two distinct interior courtyards. These really elevate the indoor/outdoor flow and allow for seamless views of the gardens and landscaping throughout the home.

We love how these elements came together in this project.

A sneak peak of our barn restoration project located near Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Originally the clients were planning to convert the nearly 100-year-old barn into a guest house, but ended up loving the space so much they made it the primary residence. We brightened up the main living space by strategically introducing floor to ceiling windows and whitewashing the old barn boards. The beautiful old heavy timbers were restored to retain the barn’s original character. More pics to follow.

One from the archives. The Lake House was designed for a young family as a lakeside retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The residence is broken up into three distinct wings connected by a central corridor. One of the main drivers of the design was to provide separation and privacy between areas of the home. This layout allowed the private wing, which contains the bedrooms, to be well separated from the main living space. Photo
Keeping it modern yet cozy at “The Pavilion”. We always aim to use restraint in our material selection. In this room, the board-form concrete hearth takes center stage.

Our latest project, Three Gables, on the North Shore of PEI, is comprised of three barn structures connected by breezeways that frame a central south-facing courtyard. Two massive lift and slide doors allow views through the building and open up to the landscape and beach beyond.

The Pavilion was designed in collaboration with landscape architects, as a seaside retreat for entertaining friends and family. The living and dining space opens to the infinity pool, beach, and ocean beyond, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor.

The RP House interior is clad entirely in white-painted poplar with exposed framing and white wood windows, creating a light, bright, and airy feel throughout the home. The calm interior along with the expansive windows throughout allow the natural beauty of PEI to shine.

Our lovely clients had already created several kilometers of hiking trails throughout their property prior to hiring us to design their dream getaway and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to add to their magical escape. This home sits lightly on the landscape – within an expansive forest and on a gorgeous lake. Although not far from the city, it feels like a world away.
