Meet Royal Canadian Naval Reserve member Laura!

“My name is Laura Lewis and I am currently a NCdt (naval cadet) as a naval warfare officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. I am from the Waterloo Region studying psychology and business at the University of Waterloo. In consideration of HMCS Haida, one thing that fascinates me about the ship is their use of simple technology, such as Morse code, which really demonstrated the time period. It is also cool to see the differences between modern ships, such as HMCS Harry-DeWolf, and old WW2 era ships, such as HMCS Haida.”

Meet Brayden!

“My name is Brayden Aljoe. I am a Boatswain Rank S2
I’m not currently enrolled in schooling as I have an apprenticeship in Sheet metal. I work with my father in his HVAC business, and I also commit a good portion of time to the naval reserves. This week, I’m most looking forward to interacting with the general public and answering any questions they may have. Also, the knowledge that is gained from working on a historic warship. “

During the month of July, HMCS STAR has held the first stage of Basic Training for 7 new Sailors. The Sailors have been trained in drill, military ethos and rules and regulations of the Canadian Armed Forces. We are proud of their accomplishments as they will be attending the final stage of their Basic Training in CFB Valcartier this August.

HMCS STAR is proud to have the Royal Canadian Navy 's Flagship HMCS HAIDA connected to our Unit in Hamilton Ontario. HMCS STAR is equally proud of the establishment of our Region of Waterloo Detachment, where HMCS CONESTOGA was situated during WW2. HMCS CONESTOGA was the Naval Training Center for Women’s Royal Canadian Navy Service (WRCNS). Each year during the month of October, The Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR commemorates the women who trained at HMCS CONESTOGA with a Commemoration Parade in downtown Galt (Cambridge) Ontario. HMCS Haida National Historic Site, Parks Canada has planned to commemorate the women who served in the WRCNS with programming onboard the HMCS Haida in Hamilton 27 – 28 of July.

A STAR Citizen Sailor

Sailor Third Class (S3) Audry Merrifield joined the Canadian Armed Forces and the Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR in 2023. The Naval Reserve has a strong history of its members being Citizen Sailors who work part time as members of the Royal Canadian Navy while working full time or attending school in their civilian life. S3 Merrifield is an example of a Citizen Sailor. She received two Co-op High School Credits while training in the very first High School Co-op Basic Training Program held at the Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR during the winter/spring of 2023. She has attended Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener Ontario for the past 4 years. S3 Merrifield enjoys her time as a Citizen Sailor and is looking forward to her training she is receiving this summer at Naval Fleet School Atlantic in Halifax Nova Scotia.

Elle a reçu deux crédits d'études secondaires coopératives alors qu'elle s'entraînait dans le tout premier programme de formation de base coopérative d'école secondaire tenu au détachement de la région de Waterloo du NCSM STAR au cours de l'hiver et du printemps 2023. Elle a fréquenté l'école secondaire Cameron Heights à Kitchener. Ontario au cours des 4 dernières années. Le Mat3 Merrifield apprécie son temps en tant que marin citoyen et attend avec impatience la formation qu'elle recevra cet été à la l’École navale (Atlantique) à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse.

On June 30th, members of HMCS STAR took part in the Admiral’s Challenge, cycling an incredible 100km across the Region of Niagara. This was part of the Navy Bike Ride that units across the country have taken part in over the month of June, including many STAR sailors. This memorable event was a chance for the sailors to get out into the community and enjoy the physical challenge with their shipmates.

Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR Co-op Basic Training Graduation

On 20 June 24 the Region of Waterloo (ROW) Detachment of HMCS STAR held its second High School Cooperative Education Basic Training Graduation. Families of the Recruits along with school board teachers, Superintendents, the Director of Education and Trusties attended the ceremony. The Command Team from HMCS STAR inspected the recruits and presented the class awards for Best Drill – S3 Naqvi, Best Dressed – S3 Ansah, Top Candidate – S3 Byrne, and Esprit De Corp – S3 Lucko. All 34 Recruits are taking further training at CFB Valcartier this summer to complete their Canadian Armed Forces Basic Training Course. HMCS STAR is proud of the accomplishments and the training that has been carried out at the Region of Waterloo Detachment, increasing the Detachment’s strength from 14 to 80 sailors in only 2 short years. Le 20 juin, le détachement de la région de Waterloo (ROW) du NCSM STAR a tenu sa deuxième remise des diplômes de formation de base en éducation coopérative au niveau secondaire. Les familles des recrues ainsi que les enseignants du conseil scolaire, les surintendants, le directeur de l'éducation et les administrateurs ont assisté à la cérémonie. L'équipe de commandement du NCSM STAR a inspecté les recrues et a remis les prix de classe pour le meilleur exercice militaire – S3 Naqvi, le mieux habillé – S3 Ansah, le meilleur candidat – S3 Byrne et l'Esprit de corps – S3 Lucko. Les 34 recrues suivent une formation complémentaire à la BFC Valcartier cet été pour terminer leur cours de formation de base des Forces armées canadiennes. On 19 June 24 five Recruits from HMCS STAR completed the Basic Military Qualifications at CFB Valcartier. They will now continue their Naval Reserve careers doing further training in their specific Trades.

A STAR Citizen Sailor

Petty Officer Second Class (PO2) Nathan Weltz joined the Canadian Armed Forces and HMCS STAR in 1995. The Naval Reserve has a strong history of its members being Citizen Sailors who work part time as members of the Royal Canadian Navy while working full time in a civilian career. PO2 Weltz is an example of one of HMCS STAR’s Citizen Sailors. During his Naval Reserve career, he trained as a Boatswain and currently holds the position as Deck Chief at the Unit. After graduating from Georgian College with Diploma in Marine Technology Navigation in 1999, he began a career as a Marine Pilot and currently works as a Marine Captain for the International District 2 of the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority. PO2 Weltz enjoys his time as a Citizen Sailor, and uses his acquired Naval Reserve skills in his civilian career and as the President for the Corporation of Professional Great Lakes Pilots.

The Navy Bike Ride at HMCS STAR

Founded in 2016, the Navy Bike Ride (NBR) encourages the well-being of our communities and families by motivating each other to be healthy through cycling and raising money for the Canadian Armed Forces Community.

On the evening of June 4th, members of HMCS STAR participated in the NBR event featuring 10 km and 30 km routes. The ride commenced at HMCS STAR, with a stop at the Naval Ships' Memorial Monument in Spencer Smith Park,
and ended back at HMCS STAR. The event culminated with a splendid BBQ, providing an enjoyable end to the day's activities.

The Band of HMCS STAR Fun Facts.

The Band of HMCS STAR has been a part of the Naval Reserve Unit in Hamilton for over 60 years. The Band consists of trained musicians and many of the Naval Reservist have music degrees from universities or college music schools. The musicians train in Hamilton during the winter months for parades, concerts, and individual combos such as jazz, rock/funk, brass, and reed.

The Band of HMCS STAR is an integral part of the Naval Reserve Division’s outreach in the community and have performed in ceremonies for local and military dignitaries and the Royal Family over the years. They perform in public and military parades, perform anthems for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Hamilton Bulldogs games, and take part in military functions.

During the summer months the Navy Musicians from the Band of HMCS STAR work across Canada. Some HMCS STAR musicians are part of the National Band of the Naval Reserve / Musique Nationale de la Réserve Navale which tours across the country from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia and have performed in such events as the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax, The Calgary Stampede and Rendez-vous naval de Quebec in Quebec City. Other HMCS STAR musicians further their music training by taking courses at the Canadian Armed Forces School of Music at CFB Borden.

Many of the musicians in the Band of HMCS STAR are from the Hamilton Region and some have transferred in from other Naval Reserve Band from across the country. Former HMCS STAR alumni have gone on to other amazing musical careers. There are former HMCS STAR musicians who have pursued careers in music both in and out of the CAF such as:

- Regular Force Naden Band in Victoria
-Regular Force Royal Canadian Artillery Band in Edmonton
- Regular Force Royal 22nd Regimental Band in Quebec City
-Regular Force Stadacona Band in Halifax

On 28 May 24, LCdr Di Berardo and LCdr Ng had the pleasure of promoting SLt Michael Bronson up from the ranks. SLt Bronson has been a key member of the Band of HMCS STAR as a percussionist. He most recently served at the rank of Petty Officer Second Class and is now the band’s Director of Music. He has also worked with the National Band of the Naval Reserve / Musique Nationale de la Réserve Navale , The School of Music at CFB Borden, and in STAR Recruiting. We look forward to his continued work with the Band and his contribution to the Naval Reserve. BZ SLt!

On April 11th, 2024, HMCS STAR saw six new recruits complete the second module of their Basic Military Qualification. This marks a milestone in their training. They were presented with the Canadian Armed Forces insignia cap badge by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Commander Di Berardo.

Sailors from across Ontario conducted a training exercise in Collingwood this weekend. Over 100 members from all seven Naval Reserve Division across Ontario worked with Collingwood Fire Department and the Ontario Provincial Police to increase the capacity to respond to emergency situations. By partnering with local authorities, members of the Canadian Forces are better prepared to respond to natural disasters, such as flooding that occurred in 2019. The Royal Canadian Navy bring important capabilities
such as small boat and diving operations to support in a time of crisis.

Des matelots de partout en Ontario ont mené un exercice d'entraînement à Collingwood cette fin de semaine. Plus de 100 membres des sept divisions de la Réserve navale de l'Ontario ont travaillé avec le service d'incendie
de Collingwood et la Police provinciale de l'Ontario pour accroître la capacité de réponse aux situations d'urgence. The Around the Bay Road Race is a long-distance road race held annually in Hamilton since 1894. The race is the oldest on the continent as the first race happened three years before the Boston Marathon. HMCS STAR is proud to be actively involved in the community we live in and take part in one of the city’s historic events.
The Naval Reserve Division had several of its sailors participate in this year’s race this past weekend. S2 den Bak, LCdr Di Berardo, S3 Clitheroe, S1 Conway, S3 Pascon, MS Sicard and PO2 MacAndrew all participated and completed either the 30km or 15km race.

La course "Around the Bay Road Race" est organisée chaque année à Hamilton depuis 1894. La course est la plus ancienne du continent puisque la première course a eu lieu trois ans avant le marathon de Boston. Le NCSM STAR est fier de s’impliquer activement dans la communauté dans laquelle nous vivons et de prendre part à l’un des événements historiques de la ville.
La Division de la Réserve navale a fait participer plusieurs de ses marins à la course de cette année le week-end dernier. Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR Fun Facts

1. In 2019, HMCS STAR established its Region of Waterloo Detachment in order to recruit and train naval reserve members in this strategically important part of Canada. Alongside members of the across Canada, we support the missions of the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Armed Forces.
2. The Detachment has increased in size from 14 sailors in 2021 to just over 80 in 2024. Many of the new sailors have been part of our new High School Co-op Basic Training Program that was established with the local school boards last year.
3. The Royal Canadian Navy and the Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR have a connection with the Region of Waterloo. Galt (Cambridge) Ontario was the home of the all-women’s training establishment, HMCS CONESTOGA, during World War 2. The Detachment and the National Band of the Naval Reserve / Musique Nationale de la Réserve Navale have honoured the women who have served at the training establishment by organizing and taking part in the HMCS CONESTOGA Commemorative Parade the past two Octobers.
4. The Region of Waterloo Detachment sailors have been involved in unique training throughout the year in preparation for summer training on the coasts.

Hockey Day in Cambridge!!

31 CER and HMCS STAR's hockey teams got together last weekend for a friendly Navy vs Army Hockey match. The game was held at Dickson Arena in Cambridge. The game was well attended by 31 CER and members of the Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR. The score: Army 4 - Navy 1. It was a good game to watch, and made for a great Navy and Army rivalry. The Region of Waterloo Detachment of HMCS STAR looks forward to future gatherings with our fellow CAF members.

Journée du hockey à Cambridge!!

Les équipes de hockey de 31 RGC et du NCSM STAR se sont réunies le week-end dernier pour un match amical de hockey entre la Marine et l'Armée. Le match s'est déroulé à la Dickson Arena de Cambridge. 31 RGC et les membres du détachement de la région de Waterloo du NCSM STAR ont assisté au match. Le score : Armée 4 - Marine 1. C'était un bon match à regarder et a donné lieu à une grande rivalité entre la Marine et l'Armée. Le détachement du NCSM STAR de la région de Waterloo attend avec impatience les prochaines rencontres avec nos collègues membres des FAC.

HMCS STAR had the pleasure of honouring some of its shipmates and guests. On a recent visit to STAR, the Central Region Commander, Captain (Navy) Geoff Hamilton, was in attendance to present awards and promotions.

• Lieutenant-Commander Karpenchuk received the Special Service Medal with the NATO bar.
• Sailor First Class Lee was appointed to the rank of Master Sailor.
• Sailor First Class Bristo awarded her employer, Environment and Climate Change Cananda, a certificate of appreciation. Daniel Avramov accepted the certificate on behalf of her department.
• Sailor Third Class Da Silva Dergado was promoted to Sailor Second Class.

Le NCSM STAR a eu le plaisir d'honorer certains de ses camarades et invités. Lors d'une récente visite au STAR, le commandant de la région centrale, le capitaine de vaisseau Geoff Hamilton, était présent pour remettre des récompenses et des promotions.

• Le Capitaine de corvette Karpenchuk a reçu la Médaille du service spécial avec la barrette de l'OTAN.
• La Matelote de première classe Lee a été promu Matelote-chef.
• La Matelote de première classe Bristo a remis un certificat d'appréciation à son employeur, Environnement et Changement climatique Canada. Daniel Avramov a accepté le certificat au nom de son entreprise.
• Le Matelot de troisième classe Da Silva Dergado a été promu Matelot de deuxième classe.

HMCS STAR held training this weekend to focus on the development of skills required for our
regional Small Boat Exercise that the unit will be hosting in Collingwood this Spring. Sailors of
Naval Reserve units train on their seamanship throughout the winter months to prepare for
exercises that improve their knowledge and team building between the different sea trades.

Le NCSM STAR a organisé une formation ce week-end pour se concentrer sur le développement
des compétences requises pour notre exercice régional sur petits embarcation qu'il organisera à
Collingwood ce printemps. Les marins des unités de la Réserve navale s'entraînent au matelotage
tout au long des mois d'hiver pour se préparer à des exercices qui améliorent leurs connaissances
et renforcent leur esprit d'équipe dans les différents métiers maritimes.
