On this day in 1918, Canadian forces played a pivotal role in the opening of the Battle of Amiens, a key moment in the First World War. Beginning on August 8th near Amiens, France, this offensive marked the start of the Hundred Days Campaign—a series of Allied attacks that would ultimately lead to the end of the war. Canadian troops, alongside their British, Australian, and French allies, spearheaded the attack, which caught the Germans completely off guard. This surprise was achieved by moving troops into position under the cover of night and using innovative tactics such as radio silence, false signals, and the strategic use of aircraft to mask the movement of forces, all designed to deceive the enemy.
The success of the Battle of Amiens was so decisive that it became known as “the black day of the German Army,” setting the stage for the final push that would culminate in the Armistice on November 11th, 1918.
//

Mark Graham was an exceptional athlete. He was a member of the Canadian 4 x 400 metres relay team in the 1992 Summer Olympics.
In 2004, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and soon became a role model for the younger soldiers. He was killed by “friendly fire” while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2006.
To honour Private Graham, a park in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, was renamed the Mark Anthony Graham Memorial Olympic Park.

The Gulf War in the Middle East began 34 years ago today.
After Iraq invaded Kuwait, Canada announced it would be providing military assistance.
More than 4,000 Canadians served in the conflict as part of an international coalition of over 35 countries which operated under a UN resolution authorizing the use of force. The Gulf War would be the first time that Canadian women served in combat roles.
After the war ended in February 1991, some Canadians took part in peacekeeping and embargo enforcement efforts in the region.
Do you know someone who served in the Gulf War?
