Gearing up for her third semester in the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program, Jamie is gaining new techniques to better support their future.

"My favorite things about Mohawk and CICE are having additional support, making new friends and learning new things. I have learned how to self-regulate with new support strategies to help me focus on my work better. My favourite course is difficult to say because I enjoy all the courses. I really enjoy doing group work and being with my peers."

This program offers students with intellectual disabilities and other significant learning challenges the opportunity to pursue a postsecondary education, prepare for success in entry level work, build independence and self-advocacy skills for adult life.

Tyler Weir - now a Mohawk graduate was one of 10 inaugural recipients of a scholarship, that allowed him to study Heating, Refrigeration & A/C Techniques.

With a can-do, positive attitude willing to troubleshoot different scenarios in the HVAC trade, Tyler has found success in the hands-on program. He found that because it was so hands-on he was able to retain what he learned through muscle memory.

The scholarship he received covered tuition, tools and living expenses for students enrolling in a skilled trade program at one of 10 participating colleges. In addition to financial support, Schulich Builders also provides leadership training and mentorship to set up graduates for success.

Daniel Collins, Professor, Construction & Building Systems program has so much passion for the industry and the future ahead.

The path originally set out for him was to go to university - but in high-school he took just one shop class that planted the seed for his future career.

After high school, he ended up taking a framing job opportunity and remembered that feeling he had in that one shop class. He went on to go through the apprenticeship program here at Mohawk and finds this industry to be a very rewarding one.

As a student in the Office Administration – Health Services program at Mohawk College, Joey recently broke ground on his new specialization, leaving an 8-year career to learn more about office administration.

“I worked in Thailand as an office administrator for eight years and I’m a registered nurse in the Philippines, where I’m from,” said Joey.

Joey knew that he wanted to merge his experiences in office administration and nursing. As he planned this next step in his life, he was faced with a major choice: where would he go to learn? “The things I learned from my experience in administration, as well as being a nurse linked well together," he says. "I found that experience very helpful when I came to Mohawk College to study office administration.”

Since joining the program, Joey feels his skills have improved and that his attention to detail is paying off. “You have to really pay attention to guidelines because specific departments or offices always have their own rules to follow.”

As he works to complete his program, Joey is also spending time working as a student employee at Mohawk through the Campus Student Employment Program (CSEP).

The time that Joey has spent working as a CSEP student has tied directly into what he’s learning in class. “The work I’m doing through the CSEP program is directly related to my program right now. I can put to use all the knowledge that I've learned in the class,” said Joey.

As he looks back on his experience with CSEP, he has advice for other students looking to enter the CSEP program. “Listen very carefully and be open minded, because that's how you learn things. As long as you are focused on your job, giving it your attention and love as well as care, you will learn everything.”

Applications for the Fall 2024 CSEP program will be opening soon! Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more information and watch our website for any updates: https://buff.ly/2OU8w79

Year over year, more than 250 members use this space to learn how to grow their own food!

Years from now, when you look back on your college journey, the moments that stick out will be ones of joy, accomplishment and learning to love your education.

Apart from being students at Mohawk College, there is something that Blen, Nish and Paula have in common: they have fallen in love with the diverse community at Mohawk College, each taking their own paths to become involved in the college community.

For Nish, his community involvement took the form of a club which he formed with his friends. “The aim of that club was to help fill in the gaps that students have once they've graduated from college. We created this small club where people would get together, coach each other, prepare for job interviews and help each other with their job search.”

This diversity has allowed Paula to discover one of the things she loves most about Mohawk College: learning an impressive array of languages. “That's something that I really like, because when you can at least say ‘hi’ in a different language, you have the chance to make a new friend.”

According to Blen, the student experience at Mohawk College is unmatched. “Once you finish here and you start your career, you likely wouldn't get this level of diversity,” she said. “Everybody is celebrating who they are without shying away from it. I look forward to that experience every time I go to Mohawk College.”

When Gabriela first attended post-secondary, her goal was to become a pediatrician. Partway through her studies she realized that path wasn’t for her. All she knew was that she wanted to work in healthcare.

A friend who attended Mohawk spoke highly of their personal experience, so Gabriela knew Mohawk was a great option. After speaking to an occupational therapist, she enrolled into the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) program.

“I honestly had no idea what an OTA/PTA was until I looked on Mohawk’s website. You’re dual trained, which means you can work with both occupational therapists and physiotherapists and in non-traditional roles such as research, and that the OTA/PTA at Mohawk College is an accredited program. This is something I'm noticing a lot of jobs are requiring as I look for my next career," she says.

Between a mix of classes and labs, Gabriela learned a great deal. She completed two placements at different healthcare centres and they broadened her horizons even further.

Ideal for those wanting some flexibility, the program is delivered in a hybrid model. On top of support within her program, Gabriela was able to take advantage of some great supports and services available at Mohawk.

If you're interested in healthcare and helping those who are in transition and want to work closely with clients, Gabriela highly recommends this program. This program starts in September and you can study in Hamilton or Burlington.
