Holyrood, located at the head of Conception Bay, is just a half hour drive from St. John's along the Trans Canada Highway (TCH), and 45 km from St.

John's along the more leisurely route of the Admirals Coast (Conception Bay Highway). The population of Holyrood is approximately 2100. This morning, Mayor Goobie, Deputy Mayor Woodford, and members of the public gathered to lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence at the Star of the Sea Cenotaph.

A Memorial Day wreath and a wreath in honour of the Unknown Soldier were laid.

Holyrood Celebrates Canada Day - Event Cancellation

Due to current park conditions, coupled with rain forecasted throughout the day, the Holyrood Celebrates Canada Day festivities scheduled for Holy Cross Park have been cancelled.

The Town of Holyrood apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

This morning's wreath laying will proceed as scheduled. Members of the public are welcome to lay a wreath at the Star of the Sea war memorial beginning at 10:45am. There will be no formal ceremony due to the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier in St. John's.

UPDATE - FIRE BAN LIFTED

As the provincial government has lifted the fire ban for the island portion of the province, the fire ban imposed for the Town of Holyrood and Holyrood Fire Department response district, including Salmonier Line, Deer Park, and Middle Gull Pond, has also been lifted.

Residents are reminded to use caution and be responsible when having fires, and to ensure that all fires are held in an enclosed CSA approved container. Fires can start and spread at anytime. Please remember to keep a water source nearby and extinguish all flame before leaving the area. Always be fire safe.

FIRE BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR JURISDICTION OF HFD - June 27, 2024

The Holyrood Fire Dept. wishes to advise all residents that the fire ban imposed on June 20 remains in effect until further notice.

This ban covers the Holyrood Fire Department service areas; the Town of Holyrood, Salmonier Line, Deer Park, and Middle Gull Pond.

The fire ban includes backyard firepits, chimineas, charcoal BBQs and open fires. Propane firepits and BBQs are permitted.

The Holyrood Fire Department is encouraging all residents to be fire safe when using propane firepits and barbeques, to keep a hose or fire extinguisher handy and follow manufacturer’s requirements regarding clearances from combustible materials.

FIRE BAN IN EFFECT for JURISDICTION OF HFD - June 20, 2024

The Holyrood Fire Dept. wishes to advise all residents that due to the number and severity of wildfires in Labrador and the provincial fire ban that has been put in place across Newfoundland and Labrador, a fire ban is being implemented within the region, which includes the Holyrood Fire Department service areas; the Town of Holyrood, Salmonier Line, Deer Park, and Middle Gull Pond.

This is to reduce the risk of forest fires and to support the efforts of wildfire suppression teams currently actioning active fires.

The fire ban that is currently in effect will be evaluated and updated by Friday, June 28, 2024.

The fire ban includes backyard firepits, chimineas, charcoal BBQs and open fires. Propane firepits and BBQs are permitted.

This session will provide an opportunity to:
- Review the existing Town Plan and Development Regulations, browse the Land Use Zone Map.
- Provide your input and opinion on where the Town is going over the next 10 years.
- Have your say in guiding development for the next 10-year period.

Any written comments or concerns can be submitted to the Town’s Planning Consultant at the Open House. Requests from groups, corporations or individuals on areas of land for possible rezoning may also be submitted.

· One sweeper broom and vehicle attachment

Emergency Water Outage- Tuesday, June 11
111 Conception Bay Highway to Seal Cove boundary.

Please note that due to a water leak, water has been shut off from 111 Conception Bay Highway to the Seal Cove boundary.

Outage time is unknown as it will depend on the amount of time it takes staff to repair.

We ask all motorist to use caution in the area as there may be traffic delays.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage. Staff will work to ensure this leak is resolved as soon as possible.

Once water is turned back on, you may experience discolored water. Please run your taps to clear the lines.

Municipal Scholarship Applications - Deadline June 7 at 4:00pm

General Information
Applications must be submitted on the Scholarship Application Form.
Applications are available here: https://holyrood.ca/municipal-scholarship-applications-2024/ or at the Town Office.

Review Process
Applications will be reviewed by a committee who will make recommendations to the Holyrood Town Council for approval.

Evaluation Criteria
Academic achievement and level of community involvement.

Deadline for Applications
Only fully completed applications and relevant information postmarked or delivered to the Town of Holyrood on or before the deadline date noted will be accepted.

Eligibility
- Successful completion of Level III in 2024
- Current resident of Holyrood
- Accepted into a post-secondary institution for September 2024
- Personal community involvement experience

Return completed application to the town office marked ‘Municipal Scholarship’ by the deadline date of June 7, 2024 at 4:00 pm.

Town of Holyrood Municipal Scholarships are intended to be given to individuals to financially assist further development of their education at a post-secondary institution of their choice.

Two successful applicants will receive a scholarship of $500 each. Please ensure the application is completed in full and received at the Town Office by the scholarship deadline. Letters of reference from community organizations supporting your involvement may also be attached.

The Town of Holyrood's Two Hour Tidy is back! A campaign to tidy properties, trails, parks, and green spaces.

Participants can drop their Two Hour Tidy Bags to the following locations. Please look for the DROP ZONE sign and leave your bags. Please note we will only be collecting the Two Hour Tidy Bags, this is not an area to drop-off bulk garbage.

The Municipal Assessment Agency has completed the valuation for the 2025 tax year. Assessment notices will be mailed to all property owners on June 3, 2024. Property owners will have until August 2, 2024 to file a formal appeal.

Wood Cutting Lottery - Salmonier Line Recreation Park - Kennedy's Lane Ext.

The Town of Holyrood, as per the Wood Cutting Policy, are offering up a parcel of land to its residents to remove the firewood. The land is located behind the Soccer Field on Kennedy's Lane Ext.

Interested individuals must have their name, phone number, and e-mail address submitted to [email protected] no later than 3:00pm June 12, 2024.

To ensure fairness and transparency, a computer-generated program will be used to randomly select a name from those names submitted. The successful person will be offered the opportunity.
Should the successful candidate NOT accept – a second draw will be actioned using the same process.

Only one submission per household will be accepted.

The selected individual must obtain a Domestic Wood Cutting Operating Permit from the provincial government before the Town will issue the wood cutting permit. The fee for the Town permit is $50.00.

The Director of Infrastructure and Public Works will meet with the selected individual on site to discuss the trees to be harvested and the details of the Wood Cutting Policy.

The wood must be harvested by September 30th, 2024.

TODAY! 📢 The Marine Institute is investigating the development of a Marine Autonomous Test Zone and we want your input.

The Marine Institute invites residents of The Town of Holyrood and surrounding communities to an information and public consultation session to learn more about a proposed Marine Autonomous Test Zone in Holyrood harbour.

The session will take place today, Thursday, May 23, 2024, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at The Launch (Arthur W. May Building), 4 Northside Rd, Holyrood, NL.

This test zone will allow for the deployment and operation of uncrewed marine vehicles, both above and below the surface, in a specific area under an approved safety management system. The zone is being designed with other users in mind, so it will have minimal or no impact on commercial and recreational activities in the area.

Meet with us at The Launch to hear more about the test zone, provide your feedback, and learn about how MI’s work is benefiting our oceans. To register, please contact [email protected].
