This week we’re posting about a fundraiser for my daughter’s university softball team.
A modern quilt in Vulcan colours. Her team is selling Pittsburg Steelers tickets which are pretty hard to sell to Canadians! Probably cost me more to make this beauty than it would if I just bought all of her Steelers tickets..
The fundraiser works like this.. pick a number between 010 and 990. The person with the number closest or equal to the pick 3 number evening draw on October 9 wins this beautiful quilt my mother and I are working on.
$10 per number choice
Vulcan Fundraiser Quilt
We're busy working on a quilt for Kait's university softball team. Pick a number from 020 to 980. The closest number to the Pick 3 number from the evening draw on October 9th wins this vulcan coloured beauty. 10$ per number choice. Here is the progression so far..
465 trees.. this quilt is a wonder really. So many trees and so many lessons. This quilt was inspired by many designers out there doing foundation paper piecing but there is one quilter, from the Netherlands, who I follow on Instagram, that is making some beautiful covers. Her work is so captivating and her finished quilts out of this world. Please visit her page Anna_jantina..
My tree quilt turned out something awesome. The backing is creative and works well.. I think. the only unfortunate part of this cover is that I used some of the cheap reds and dark browns. I'm afraid it will dry clean only.
There is so much I love about this quilt.. the contrasting light against the darks. I love the simple design.. and I love the grid pattern that I used to quilt this cover and I love, love, love the back of the cover. I found this pattern at a shop in the USA.. somewhere between Georgia and Florida. I'm not sure what the pattern's story is.. but my idea is that the block is made up of green fabric for land.. blue for sky and the three squares in the middle are the sunrise or sunset. This pattern is called 'Road to Ruby's' by Sweet Little Quilts. I am already planning the next 'Road to Ruby's'

Kantha quilts are traditionally created from a mix of old saris and other discarded pieces of fabric. Kantha refers to a small running stitch that can be simply straight lines or an intricate pattern. Kantha quilts do not typically have batting so they are very light. This cover's story is about the search for bright fabrics and several failed Kantha stitch attempts. I tried several times using embroidery floss. Taking it out and trying again.. and again. While the end result is still a beautiful quilt, I just couldn't achieve the same look of an authentic Kantha quilt. I used flannel as batting for this quilt and it's reversible. Quilted with gold thread and of course my go to.. loopy meander stitch.
When I look at this quilt and think about it's story, I think about my mother's love for flowers. This love was no doubt passed down from her mother which was passed down from her mother.. I remember going to my great grandparents house, they had a huge rock garden that ran along the back of the house on the hill.
My grandmother also had flower gardens running the length of her yard and a vegetable garden in the back.
This cover's story is about my mother's love for flowers.. this is her fabric garden.
The Frugal Quilter .. I've learned several lessons while making the red patchwork quilt. The biggest lesson is that red = risky.
I wanted to make a simple quilt for my king size bed. I didn't want to spend a lot of money (quilting is not a cheap hobby!) and this quilt would be my first go on the long arm.
The fabric comes from many shops, from Innisfil to Pittsburgh (and beyond). Most shops don't mind cutting an 8th of a meter or 4.5 inches.. but several don't cut that small. I didn't want to buy more than I needed and wanted to use as many different fabrics as I could find. I ended up collecting sale fabrics in green/white or red/white some off whites for the back.
This quilt maxed out the Bernina Pro Frame (12 feet). I used a loopy meander pattern (very very beginner) and wow.. I was pretty impressed with my work and how it looked on my bed.
It wasn't long before I determined it was time to wash my quilt. I tossed it into the washing machine, on cold, I didn't want the colours to run. Disaster. All I could see was red. The contrasting colours were pink.. the whites were pink.. the greys were pink.. the greens were even pink. Frantically I searched for a remedy and found a post that recommended soaking it in the bathtub with dishsoap. 2 days and success.
Red = Risky.
Travelling around Canada and the USA, visiting every quilt shop we can find. We're inspired by the many creative people we meet. All quilts have a story.
Our profile picture tells a story of Mom and I at the beginning of our quilting journey. The many quilt shops we've visited and the ones we've labeled as our Favourites. This quilt is made from several different Kaffe Fassett collections using the Seed Quilt kit that we purchased from Hyggeligt in St. Mary's Ontario. One of our favourite shops.
Kaffe fabrics demand your attention as they stand on the shop shelves with their colourful designs and bold colours. This quilt is the first one where we have focused on using fabrics from one designer.
