Let's be real: Brushing our teeth isn't the sexiest thing on earth, but consistent oral hygiene helps prevent a long list tooth and gum related issues as well as freshens breath.⁠

Three important things to consider when it comes to brushing your teeth:⁠

How should you brush?⁠
Place the brush at a 45 degree angle against the teeth and work down from the gums in a circular motion. For an electric brush hold in place for 2-3 seconds, then move on. Make sure you get all surfaces inside and outside including chewing surfaces. A good brushing should take 2-3 minutes.⁠

When should you brush? ⁠
In the morning and at night before bed is best. Dental decay is much higher at night. Our natural defenses against tooth decay are our tongues and our saliva. Limited tongue movement during sleep as well as reduced saliva production makes the night time brush particularly important.⁠

What type of brush should you use?⁠
There are many different options available whether is an electric or eco friendly bamboo type. The overriding factor is - use a soft brush. Vigorous brushing with a brush that is too firm can lead to loss of structure as well as sensitivity. ⁠

Staining and discoloration to our teeth are the result of lifestyle habits, previous oral history and of course age. They can be broken into two categories: Extrinsic and Intrinsic staining.. So let's dive into them below⬇️⁠

EXTRINSIC STAINS: ⁠
These stains generally occur on the surface of the tooth and are usually the result of the consumption of highly pigmented foods and beverages, smoking and inconsistent oral hygiene. Most of the time they can be easily removed by a polishing or a whitening session.⁠
⁠
INTRINSIC STAINS:⁠
These stains occur much deeper in the tooth. Some common causes are treatment with tetracycline antibiotics or excess fluoride while the tooth is still forming.⁠
Trauma to a tooth also can cause discoloration. This is a result of excess blood flow to the tooth to deliver healing cells. The iron in the blood can saturate the dentin an cause the tooth to darken.⁠
⁠
Teeth Whitening works best on extrinsic staining, however I have still seen improvements to the teeth with intrinsic staining. Keep in mind removing the outer staining can still improve the appearance of a tooth with intrinsic staining. If you have a tooth that is significantly darker than the others due to trauma, it's best to discuss your options with your dentist.⁠
