I’ve been out with a nasty cold but I’m back on my feet and video is back on the to do list! When I’m sick it’s only chores required to keep someone alive.
We had a crazy rain storm last night and although I’m usually strongly opposed to rain at this point in the year it was nice to be able to evaluate the imact of the ditch clearing we just had done. Long video today so just a clip here and a link for the rest. Please enjoy a look. I’m so happy! https://youtu.be/eXqdwO69bwg?si=3P6lQgSy4KVZzhLq #betterdrainage #farmlife #horses #dogs
So we have a 5 min intro video to the new piglets but warning, it includes some sad news. Farming is rough and Cream had a difficult delivery and without the assistance of both our friends and our vet we might have lost Cream as well as the babies. The outcome was not perfect but it is much better than we feared and pretty darn cute. Full video at https://youtu.be/badiGoCPcCM?si=__Xvv-nAxDXZxArF
Inspired by Ronald Kan,last night’s adventures! I have a barnwear rack with many many layers most of which I’ve been wearing. Last night was a little rough as about half the chickens (17 of them!) decided not to make it through the wind and were huddled in the drive shed half covered in snow. Also there 4 geese. Thanks to Bri for helping with the many trips out of the driveshed, through the gate, up the hill and into the chicken coop. Morons! Also thanks to Chris Williamson who sent us home from our last visit with a couple pair of ski goggles. They were intended for using the smokehouse but they’ve been incredibly helpful with blowing snow the last couple days! Also included, quick video of a break in the storm Sunday.
I’ve been working my way steadily through my to do list although oddly there has been no progress on folding laundry mountain. Must make list is down to 3, nice to make is down to 5 and Cake had cupcakes last night so my only contribution was herding toddler piglets away so the babies could have breakfast (and I could count). 4 spotted and 4 or 5 black ones. I’m still not sure, but we have brand new piglets to snuggle and sniff!
Had a slight delay getting to the Norland Summer Festival this morning as Gladys and George announce the increase in their family. In true goose fashion they announced by yelling at everyone, including their older son to get away!
So if you’re listening to this I just want to say I DO know the difference between a horse and a cow. They take turns doing this routine and the really sad occurrences are when only one can’t figure it out and the rest leave her behind.
Took a weekend off and just relaxed and while I was gone Liz stepped up and planted 500 Mexican purple and another 300 music on top of the 9 rows of bulbils (baby garlic seeds, 2-3 years to maturity), 2 of Italians silver and 7 of music. We both got today off of planting thanks to near constant rain but I turned my attention to other projects and have started clearing out the freezer of all the excess fruit that did not make it to jam this summer. I will be ready for the Christmas show! One project I did work on the weekend was updating the online store so you can order jam from me even when there is not a Christmas show coming! Launch coming soon so watch this space! In the mean time see how the birds react to their first treats in 2 whole days!
I definitely owe a state of the farm update but tonight deserves a post all its own! We had a very cool visitor to the farm as Spot On Hoof Trimming visited to give the cows a trim. This was not universally appreciated but I’m sure the benefits will become clear! Unfortunately when we went out to open the gates for their arrival we were greeted with 2 bonus cows, 2 loose horses and a couple broken sections of fence. Horses are contained, cows are napping with our ladies and the fence is…holding. Tomorrow I now need to find time for cow owner locating and actual fence repair in a day that was already overflowing! On the positive side the cows are trimmed and the horses are scheduled for first thing tomorrow so the whole farm will have neatly cared for toes. Sleep well and don’t dream of invading cows. Love from the farm!
A bonus today since I can't put video and photos in the same post. Chickens and cows with a clearance piece of watermelon. The things we do for entertainment!
Goose walk
We are very far behind on updates. So far that I've had to split this one into 3 posts in order to fit all the pictures in.
Part 1 &2 are up on the blog and 3 is coming soon!

I'm also including a facebook bonus - Geese being told it's bedtime and herded home to the coop. The cows are very curious about the new residents.
