Posted • California Gov. signed two bills on Tuesday that will protect performers’ likenesses from being replicated by AI.

Newsom visited the Los Angeles headquarters of actors’ union SAG-AFTRA to greenlight the legislation: “We’re making sure that no one turns over their name, image and likeness to unscrupulous people without representation,” he said.

SAG-AFTRA president was present for the signing, as was the union’s executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and secretary-treasurer Joely Fisher.

“We continue to wade through uncharted territory when it comes to how AI and digital media is transforming the entertainment industry, but our North Star has always been to protect workers,” Newsom said. “This legislation ensures the industry can continue thriving while strengthening protections for workers and how their likeness can or cannot be used.”

Paul Williams' reputation as a motion picture songwriter took hold in 1973, with an Academy Award nomination for "Nice to Be Around" (co-written with John Williams) from "Cinderella Liberty" (1973). 1975 brought Paul's second nomination for the soundtrack from Brian De Palma's cult classic, "Phantom of the Paradise" (1974). He not only wrote the words and music and produced the album for the rock cantata, but also held the audience captive with his devious portrayal of the evil Swan.

Paul went on to become the Music Supervisor for "A Star Is Born" (1976), bringing with it the challenge of working with three different composers to produce its award-winning score. Williams and Kenny Ascher won a Golden Globe Award for "Best Motion Picture Score". "Evergreen," co-written with Barbra Streisand, won the 1976 Oscar for Best Song of the Year. In 1980, Paul was once again nominated by the Academy for the score from the box office smash hit, "The Muppet Movie" (1979), for Best Original Score as well as the song "Rainbow Connection" being nominated for Best Song. "The Muppet Movie" soundtrack went on to win two Grammy Awards and became the biggest soundtrack album of the year, exceeding sales of one million units. Paul reunited with Henson Productions for the Disney feature film, "The Muppet Christmas Carol" (1992). He wrote and produced the songs for the soundtrack which brought with it yet another Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Album for Children.

I do find that my happiest moments on the road are not standing on the balcony of a really nice hotel. That’s a sort of bittersweet—if not melancholy—alienating experience, at best. My happiest moments on the road are always off-camera, generally with my crew, coming back from shooting a scene and finding ourselves in this sort of absurdly beautiful moment, you know, laying on a flatbed on those things that go on the railroad track, with a putt-putt motor, goin’ across like, the rice paddies in Cambodia with headphones on… this is luxury, because I could never have imagined having the freedom or the ability to find myself in such a place, looking at such things.
To sit alone or with a few friends, half-drunk under a full moon, you just understand how lucky you are; it’s a story you can’t tell. It’s a story you almost by definition, can’t share. I’ve learned in real time to look at those things and realize: I just had a really good moment.”
