High-risk infants like pre-term babies, multiples (twins, triplets), and babies cared for in NICU will benefit from Early Physiotherapy Intervention.
The goal of EI (Early Intervention)is to support a child and their family in improving neurodevelopmental outcomes in those infants.
Having a full neurodevelopmental assessment at an early age can make a huge impact on your child's progress.
Education, home exercises, and tips on how to carry, change diapers, play, and position your baby can be fun and functional!
Love,
Milena 💕

Recently, crawling was removed from the CDC's list of milestones to watch for in your baby.
Why crawling is important?
🧠 Bilateral coordination
🧠 Sensory development
🧠 Reflex integration
🧠 Strength neck, core, hips, arms and wrist

Some babies “skip” crawling but there's always a reason for it that would be addressed. Some reasons a baby would skip crawling are:
👶🏻 Baby didn't roll
👶🏻 overuse of containers
👶🏻 Muscle weakness or tightness
👶🏻 Low tonus

☀️If your baby is not crawling by 11 months please give your pediatric physio a call 📱. Love,
Milena 💕

How many times has your Pediatric Physio told you they are working on Proprioception? BUT what is proprioception?
Proprioception is the sense of knowing where your body is in space and in relation to objects around it.

Proprioceptive input comes in through the muscles and joints of the body. The brain takes in this information and is able to process how your body needs to move in order to complete tasks.

There is evidence that proprioceptive training can yield meaningful improvements in somatosensory (sensation like pain, pressure ) and sensorimotor function.

With respect to improving motor function, a multi-approach may be most advantageous. Those forms of training incorporating both passive and active movements (i.e., proprioceptive and sensorimotor information) with and without visual feedback appear to be most beneficial.

Some activities that provide proprioceptive input are :

🏋🏻‍♀️Weightbearing activities e.g. crawling, push-ups, animal walks
🪢Resistance activities e.g. pushing/pulling.
📚Heavy lifting e.g. carrying books, helping mom carrying groceries
🏃🏻Cardiovascular activities e.g.running, jumping on a trampoline, swimming
🎈Oral activities e.g. chewing, blowing bubbles.
🤗Deep pressure e.g. tight hugs. Have fun 🌟

Almost the last day of another challenging year for most of us. As a family we have been supporting Canadian Blood Services for the last 3 years after our daughter needed blood transfusion. That very scary and life changing moment made us aware of the need of blood / plasma donation. So many kids are in need of life saving blood right now ! Kelowna has a new Plasma Donation Centre and it’s so welcoming and easy to donate !
Your donated plasma touches the lives and families of thousands of patients who require life-saving therapies and treatments made from plasma-derived protein products. Common conditions such as bleeding disorders, burns, immunodeficiency, need of blood after surgeries , and many more ! If you can, please consider donating plasma !

Happy Monday !!!
It's important for your child to have regularly scheduled checkups, often called well-child visits or health checkups, beginning shortly after birth and lasting through the teen years.
These appointments allow your doctor to keep a close eye on your child's general health and development. Finding possible problems early gives your child the best chance for proper and successful treatment. And this is when a pediatric physiotherapy baby wellness visit is important !! During these visits, your pediatric Physio will examine your child and ask you questions about your child's development and behavior. Your physiotherapist will also advise regarding positioning and how to help your baby achieve its developmental motor and sensorial milestones. Babies learn so much in the first year of their lives, and so much of that learning comes from moving their bodies
Early interventions are always easier on the baby, family and have the best outcome !!! I'm here to help ☀️

When can you start tummy time with your newborn baby ? As soon as possible ! 👶🏻 Ways to boost tummy time
⭐️Get down on the floor with your baby, face-to-face or side-by-side or place baby on a higher surface ( bed ) and stay at his eye level ⭐️ Place your baby on your own tummy while you lie on your back (watch out for drool) ! ⭐️ Prop him up by placing a nursing pillow (or other firm cushion) under his chest and arms ⭐️Try many time during the day !!
Have fun 🙂

Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day. This book I bought 24 years ago and is the reason I became a pediatric physio. The strength and hope kids affect by cerebral palsy taught me changed my life and I’m grateful for it ! Ps. If your kids have been my patient you know this baby in the picture 😉

This is a question I get all the time from families ! Most children will walk independent by 11-15 months but development varies( please don’t compare !). Walking is only considered delayed if it has not been achieved by 17-18 months . That being said if your baby is not progressively meeting their milestone I always recommend further investigation ! At Physio for Kids I will address your concerns and your baby needs in a family-centred, individualized intervention and in a fun way ! Have a nice weekend ☀️☀️☀️

It’s back to school ! Can’t believe it’s September and kids will be back in the classroom next week !! Just a reminder on how to proper use backpacks !
🎒Always wear both shoulder straps 🎒Carry the heaviest itens closest to the body
🎒Avoid one shoulder bags ! 🎒Don’t let your kids backpack hand longer than 4 inches bellow their waistline ! 🎒. Have a great start of school year kids ! 📚✏️

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a health problem of the hip joint. It’s when the joint hasn’t formed normally, so it doesn’t work as it should.
Your child’s treatment will depend on the severity of their condition. The goal of treatment is to restore normal hip function by correcting the position or structure of the joint. Non-surgical treatment options are : Observation, Pavlik harness and casting . Surgical treatment options are open reduction and closed reduction .
Most babies can show a delay in their motor development after the use of the Pavlik harness and casting or surgical intervention due to immobilization or pain. Physiotherapy will assess , educate regarding posture/ positioning and develop and exercise exercises program to get babies moving again !!!

Children W sit for a number of reasons.
When a child W sits they create a large base of support and a lower centre of gravity. In this position, there trunk and core posture muscles don’t need to work hard and often not at all! For other children tight hip muscles may be a cause and sometimes, it’s just habit. However, whether intervention is required will depend on a number of variables and your child’s overall development.
W sitting may contribute to
☀️pigeon toed walking
☀️altered development of the hip
☀️weak trunk and core muscles
☀️tight hamstrings
How we can help ? 👍🏻encouraging other sitting positions we will be introducing variability in your child’s sitting repertoire while working on their trunk stability.
Sitting cross legged, long sitting, side sitting or providing a small step to sit on are good alternatives. 👍🏻 and lots and lots of more fun games, exercises and stretches !!!
