June is National Indigenous History Month!

MĂ©tis Elders

In MĂ©tis communities, Elders are the main source of historical and cultural information. MĂ©tis Elders teach younger generations about MĂ©tis history, lifeways, and culture. In Michif, Elders are called “lii vyeu” or the “old people.” They were also known in Michif as “Ahneegay-kaashigakick” or “the ones who know.” Other phrases are used to describe Elders in Michif include “aniki ka kischi kishkaytakik / aniki mishchet ka kishkaytakik.” These two phrases translate to “those that have a lot of wisdom.” There are different kinds of Elders—some practice medicines, some are language keepers, some are midwives, and some tell stories and possess and share other aspects of traditional knowledge. When working with Elders, strict protocols must be followed.
