Epic day west coast fishing on Haida Gwaii in my boat. Fun times on the water w Ruben. Fish is prepped and in the freezer. Long day - but amazing place on this planet to harvest Chinook salmon. We limited out and had time to check our crab and prawn traps. Great way to celebrate Canada Day.

🌼 ARROWLEAF BALSAMROOT 🌼

If you’re travelling along the Naramata Bench this time of year, you’ll notice that the hillsides are covered with vibrant, cheery yellow blooms! These native plants are not just pretty to look at, they have a long history here in the Okanagan Valley.

A few neat facts about Arrowleaf Balsamroot:

🌼 It is the official flower of Kelowna, but can be found all across the Okanagan

🌼 It’s name is a nod to the arrowhead shaped petals and pine-scented resin from its roots

🌼 It has been used widely by indigenous peoples across Western Canada & USA for its medicinal purposes, as a natural remedy for burns, disinfecting wounds, insect bites, sinus or lung congestion, headaches, and many other ailments

🌼 Almost the entire plant is edible, including the leaves, roots, stems & seeds

🌼 They are a staple food for local wildlife including elk, deer & bighorn sheep

🌼 They are commonly nicknamed “Okanagan Sunflower”
