MSc. Anatomical Sciences
Welcome to the Queen's University Master's of Science (Anatomical Sciences) page!
The second half of the semester kicked off last week as the students were introduced to the Endocrine System! Luning and Josh both did an awesome job discussing all of the glands and hormones within the system. Sometimes our PII students have family/friends attend their guest lectures for support, an example of this being Josh’s dad! 👏Can’t wait for the Circulatory & Lymphatic systems this week🩸
Our final two guest lectures before reading week focused on some of the Special Senses! Sebastian started off by discussing the ear and everything about hearing and balance👂Hilary then finished the first half of the semester by teaching the students about vision and the eye! We can’t wait to SEE (👀) what the second round of guest lectures will bring - starting TODAY with the Endocrine System!
The next system that the ANAT 101 students learned about was the Nervous System!! Last week, Madeline gave both of her guest lectures back-to-back on Monday and Tuesday, and did an awesome job of introducing the concepts of nervous tissue, neurons, the spinal cord, and spinal nerves! Finishing the week off strong, Isabella wrapped things up with a deep dive into the brain and cranial nerves!🧠
Just a quick reminder that TODAY (Feb. 15th) is the LAST DAY to apply to the Anatomical Sciences program here at Queen’s!! We’re so excited to welcome the new juniors in a few months, so make sure you get your application in😊
Week 3 of guest lectures is in the books! Nicolas & Ella started the week off strong as they went through the bones and muscles of the lower limb🦵! Then on Friday, Shay wrapped up the skeletal & muscular systems by teaching the students all about the thorax🩻Overall, all of the guest lectures for the first two systems have been extremely well done and we can’t wait to teach the future nurses about the rest of the human body!👏
Our second batch of PII Guest Lectures comin at ya! Last week Monday & Tuesday, the nursing students learned all about the bones and muscles of the upper limb during Ali and Brittany’s amazing lectures!💪 All of our PIIs have done SO well and we’re excited to keep teaching over the next few months😊
On Monday (Jan. 16), Tuesday (Jan. 17), and Friday (Jan. 20), our first three PIIs discussed some skeletal anatomy with the 200 nursing students in Walter Light Auditorium! 🦴 Joshua kicked off our guest lecture series by teaching the students about the axial skeleton. Next up was Keira, one of our PII Class Representatives, who introduced all of the different types of joints and their movements! Finally, on Friday, the students learned all about the histological side of bones when Luning explained the makeup of bone tissue. Overall, it was a GREAT first week of guest lectures and we are so excited to continue teaching about the skeletal system over the next few lectures!!👏😊
Hi everyone!! As the new year has begun and our seniors have graduated, the Class of 2023 has now taken over the Instagram😊 We are SO excited to announce that we’ve started giving Guest Lectures to first year nursing students in their Introduction to Human Anatomy (ANAT 101) course! These lectures are our PII class’ very first time guest lecturing in front of students and we want to take you along for the ride. Keep your eyes peeled on our Instagram as we will be sharing a post every week with our PIIs and their lecture topics!👀
Hi everyone! Today marks the final day that the Class of 2022 can call themselves PII Anatomical Sciences “Masters Candidates” at Queen’s. Over the past few weeks you have all given your final guest lectures, completed your research projects, and successfully presented and defended your theses!👏

We've got some catching up to do! Here is the senior class when they wrapped up their full-body cadaveric dissection in late August. woohoo!
Here are the senior students taking photographs of their H&E or Masson's Trichrome stained histology slides! Can you guess some of the organs they're looking at?
Our current students are busy at work practicing how to prepare histology slides for BMED 828 Advanced Histology and Staining Techniques! Here is a sneak peek at what they're up to. Stay tuned for when they stain their good slides.
Step 1: Section tissue *watch your fingers*
Step 2: Fish for slides - no chips involved
Step 3: Arti-fact check under the microscope!
Saturday night brings us to our last spotlight of the week 😎
Meet Leah Velikonja!
"After six months in the Anatomy program, I have already gained so many skills. Working alongside such dedicated and intellectual individuals has helped me succeed more than I ever have before. The students and the faculty create such a positive learning environment, but the best part is the immersive learning experience. This program provides you with all the tools to be an expert on the human body and how to teach effectively. I’m so glad I can be part of such an amazing program!"
Leah's fun fact is that she loves travelling and learning about new cultures and that she has visited over 18 countries so far!
Time for another feature on our from the Anatomical Sciences Class of 2021 🤩
Meet Mary Zach!
"I have always loved learning about the human body and been fascinated by its complexity. I was unsure which career I wanted to pursue, so I decided to follow my interests in further education with the hope of finding a clearer direction. The Masters of Anatomical Sciences Program at Queen's was a logical choice as it offers incredible opportunities to learn practical techniques, gain teaching skills, and obtain research experience all while studying the human body. As a result, I have discovered that I want to be pathologist assistant! I am so excited for the rest of the year and beyond!"
Her fun fact is that she has been playing violin for 17 years, wow 🎻
