Don Cherry, born February 5, 1934, in Kingston, Ontario, is a former NHL player, coach, and iconic Canadian sports broadcaster. Cherry's hockey career began in the minors, notably playing for the Boston Bruins briefly. Transitioning to coaching, he led the Bruins aggressively, reaching two Stanley Cup Finals and winning the Jack Adams Award in 1976.
His fame soared post-coaching as a commentator on "Hockey Night in Canada," hosting "Coach's Corner" with Ron MacLean. Known for his bold opinions, patriotic stance, and flamboyant style, Cherry stirred controversy until his 2019 dismissal over perceived xenophobic remarks. Despite this, he remains cherished by many fans for his passion, charisma, and contributions to hockey culture.
Cherry's legacy extends to charity work, books, and induction into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2015, honoring his profound impact on the sport and Canadian identity.
