Artist Spotlight - Samantha Dennis

Samantha Dennis (she/her), an award-winning Toronto-based visual artist of Jamaican descent, skillfully fuses abstraction and realism techniques to craft vibrant portraits that celebrate the beauty of black bodies. Motivated by a desire for increased representation in the art world, Samantha navigates a fascinating intersection of identity as a black woman, exploring and capturing the diverse experiences of other black individuals through her paintings. In 2014, she earned her BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCADU (Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto). In late 2018, she started pursuing an independent art practice. Since then she has had her work featured on TTC, CBC, in United Contemporary, Withrow Common, Nuit Blanche and many other prominent locations.

Artist Spotlight - Andre Mandela Lopez

Andre Mandela Lopez (he/him/they/them) is an Afrolatino multidisciplinary visual artist and healing arts educator born and raised in west end T'karonto. Andre's work is an expression of his love for humanity, often combining the Black human form and other elements from nature to explore political dynamics in a spiritual context. His academic background in political science and experience as an arts educator greatly influence the content of his work, reflecting his passion for freedom and community. The intention driving Andre's art is to tell the truth, invite play, encourage love, and inspire revolution.

Black & Free: New Art is back at THEMUSEUM for a full-day event this September! Explore THEMUSEUM's 5 floors, listen to artist talks, and peruse a vendor market on September 22.

We're excited to announce our first artist, Alyssa Vernon (***rCollageCollectives)! Alyssa Vernon is a Jamaican / Guyanese collage artist living in Kingston, Ontario. A Queen's graduate with degrees in Gender Studies and Education, she's now a passionate Black and q***r teacher integrating collage into education to blend creativity into learning.

Alyssa's collage art centers on Black girlhood, (un)belonging, q***r liberation, and community, drawing from Black histories to help imagine liberatory Black futures. Through her art, Alyssa aims to validate Black experiences, promote healing, and foster love. Co-Founder of Q***r Collage Collective, Alyssa leads programming for learning, community building, healing, and strengthening mental health.
