Every year on Remembrance Day we highlight an animal war hero. This year we are sharing a brief history of Sergeant Bill. Initially Private Bill, he was the mascot of the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade (also known as the “Fighting Fifth”) in Quebec. When they were deployed to France, Bill was not allowed to come with them but the soldiers smuggled him aboard and he made the journey.
🐐
In March 1915, during the Battle of Neuve-Chappelle, Bill is credited with saving the lives of at least two soldiers when he head butted them into a trench seconds before a shell exploded where they had stood. Bill took the brunt of the explosion but survived and received the Mons Star for this act of heroism.
🐐
Bill was promoted to Sergeant Bill during the Second Battle of Ypres.
🐐
Bill was wounded several times during the war, including being hit by shrapnel, surviving a bout of trench foot and was once chlorine-gassed.
After Armistice Day, Sergeant Bill marched in a parade in Germany and led the parade when the “Fighting Fifth” returned home. He also received the General Service Medal and Victoria Medal.
🐐
Today, we thank, and remember, Sergeant Bill and all of those, human and animal, that have served.
Thank you to Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence and Canadian Expeditionary Force Research Group for providing the information and photograph in this post.

Our phone lines are down and we are unsure when service will be restored. We are working to forward one of our lines to a staff member’s cell phone but this may not be available for another hour or so. With only one available line it may be challenging to get through. Therefore, we ask that, if possible, please call for urgent matters only. For all other matters we ask that you contact us by email at:

Dr. Kat and Madison had so much fun with this appointment! Some days we really do get to play with kittens 😻
On Wednesdays we wear pink!
Maple Syrup was just the cutest girl when she was here for her spay last week 💕
Charlie Brown giving us the cutest little tongue bleb while he was recovering from his TPLO (knee surgery for a torn cruciate ligament). Thanks to his epidural he was feeling quite comfortable in his kennel! Epidurals are a critical factor in pain control for dogs undergoing major orthopedic surgeries. And, when pain sensation is blocked by the epidural, we are able to use lower doses of anesthetic drug which also decreases the risks associated with anesthesia! 🐶
Pepe decided to go for a stroll last week and decided not to take his Mom along. Luckily he was found and brought in before anything bad happened! In Pepe’s case our staff knows him well but we checked his microchip to be 100% sure. Had Pepe been brought anywhere the microchip would have been crucial to get him home quickly! Is your pet microchipped?
UPDATE: phones are working again hooray!

Fisher insisted on making some modifications to his outfit before his visit! ❤️
Many dogs, including little ones but especially big dogs, feel more comfortable on the floor for their exams. This is why we have tables that lift to accommodate the space they need. But not Roni! Roni and his owner participate in grooming competitions so he loves getting up on the table! He was so much fun to examine though Dr. Rebecca did need him to lie down as he was far too tall for her up there! 😃
Happy 🐶😻🐾❤️

Cookie is the sweetest little teacup yorkie. Because her mouth is sooooo tiny she is very prone to periodontal disease (which is disease of the gums and bone around the teeth). She comes in for regular dental cleaning to try and maintain good oral health. She did need a couple teeth extracted this year unfortunately but she was a champ for her oral surgery! Her size is hard to tell in this photo but can you guess her weight?!
Sweet Lily was hitting us with the ultimate puppy eyes 🐶🥰🥹
