Today is Emancipation Day, a key moment in Canada's history. On August 1,1834, the Slavery Abolition Act ended slavery in Canada. Officially recognized by the House of Commons in 2021, this day prompts us to reflect on the history of slavery and the ongoing impact of anti-Black racism in Canada and healthcare.
At St. Mary's General Hospital and Grand River Hospital we are committed to eliminating barriers to healthcare access, including systemic racism.
Today, we raised the Pan-African flag across our campuses to symbolize our dedication to creating safe, inclusive spaces for all. With the support of our Grand River Black Health Professional (Employee Resource Group), we continue to learn and advance our efforts in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Today, St. Mary's General Hospital and Grand River Hospital are proud to announce that the University of Waterloo is the future home of Waterloo Region’s new hospital.
Thank you to FordNation and Minister Sylvia Jones who helped share this historic announcement. We are grateful for the Government of Ontario’s support in our Building the Future of Care Together Project.

Brandon Douglas, Vice-President Clinical Services & Interim Chief Nurse Executive at St. Mary’s General Hospital, is sharing his story during Pride Month.
Growing up in a small, conservative town in southern Ontario, Brandon faced societal pressures and gender stereotypes. In his first year of university, he embraced a fresh start. His friends knew him as “straight,” but his own sexuality remained a question mark.
Brandon eventually married a woman, had three beautiful children, and built a great career. Yet, something was missing.
At 30, his first date with a man confirmed his truth. He and his wife separated amicably and today he’s happily married to a wonderful man.
St. Mary’s General Hospital and Grand River Hospital continue to promote, support, and embrace inclusivity through Pride events and education.
Let's celebrate love, acceptance, and compassionate care together! 🏳️🌈❤️ Read Brandon's story: https://www.smgh.ca/about-us/st.-mary-s-news/blog-posts/blog-posts-unlinked/~319-Brandon-s-Story-Celebrating-Pride-Month
