Kathryn Ladano
Dr. Kathryn Ladano is one of Canada's premiere bass clarinetists. She is based in Kitchener-Waterloo
This past weekend I was interviewed on CBC's "Fresh Air" program about "Anatomy of the Recovering Brain" and the long process of recovery that lead up to that project. You can listen at the link below:
"I just felt like my brain slowed down." A musician tells us the story of her recovery from a severe brain injury, including her return to the stage. | Fresh Air with Ismaila Alfa | Live Radio | CBC Listen After a minor car accident three years ago, bass clarinetist Kathryn Ladano was left with a severe brain injury -- and the inability to play her instrument. She told us about her long road to recovery, and how she's finally ready to perform again.
Exciting things are in the works! This is a sneak-peek at the music that our very own Kathryn Ladano has been practicing for our upcoming season finale, Anatomy of the Recovering Brain.
More information to come in the next few days…stay tuned!
This concert is in partnership with the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo Wellington and the Ontario Brain Injury Association. Thanks to the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund and the Waterloo Region Community Foundation for their support of this project!

I was so moved by the messages of love and spirituality that ‘The Alchemist’ espouses.
Alchemist’ Brew, track 2 from the album, Project Dovetail, released 1 year ago this month, inspired by Paulo Coelho’s seminal novel, featuring Kathryn Ladano (bass clarinet) and yours truly on organ.

Last year I was fortunate to be able to contribute to an album project during a pandemic, as part of the Silence Collective. Our final project, "RiverChants" has just been released on Bandcamp and we'll have CDs and vinyl copies available as well. While we all recorded our parts separately and I didn't work with any of these artists in person, the final project features myself alongside Madhur Anand (Spoken Word/Poet), Jeff Bird (Graphic Score Composer, Filmmaker), Matt Brubeck (Cello), Gary Diggins (Cornet, Waterfall Kalimba), Christine Duncan (Voice), Daniel Fischlin (Guitars, Monotronics, Water ImaginÆrium), Karen Houle (Spoken Word/Poet), Lewis Melville (Electric Banjo, BetaBlock), and Joe Sorbara (Percussion, Klepsydra). Check out our work at the link below!

One of the pieces featured in “Kathryn Ladano: Premieres” is "Avoiding the Answers" (2013), composed by Kathryn Ladano herself! It's the oldest work on the program and involves two parts, one performed live and the other acting as a backing track. The backing track features Kathryn on bass clarinet, with effects, such as a long reverb, added. The live part is fully Improvised. While the performer can play whatever they wish for the live part, it is important to complement the backing track and fill in the many open spaces within the texture. The piece will sound different each time and has only been performed live once before (and never in KW). Don’t forget to get a ticket to this amazing concert happening April 16th (link in bio)!
On April 16th, i'll be performing a brand new program of solo works for bass clarinet. This is something I haven't done in a long time and I think is very much overdue. There will be 7 works and 5 world premieres, including one of my own pieces for bass clarinet and backing track. You can attend from anywhere - and the show will be up for a full week, so it doesn't matter if you're not free on the 16th to watch. I'll also be performing new works by Karen Sunabacka, Stas Omelchenko, David Jensenius, Kourosh Ghamsari-Esfahani, Veda Hingert-McDonald, and Greg Turner.
