11 fun fact about electricity

At bluetop electric , we love learning new things about the world of electricity. Our electrical repair experts did some research and found some interesting facts you may not know. Check them out:

1. Electricity travels at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles per second.

2. Before electricity was a way of life, ancient Egyptians were aware that lightning and shocks from electric fish were very powerful. They used to refer to these fish as the “Thunderers of the Nile.”

3. Electricity can be created using water, wind, the sun, and even animal waste.

4. When lightning strikes, it flows from the cloud to the ground, but the part we see is actually the charge going from the ground back up into the cloud.

5. Electricity is sometimes used as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), where patients are given electrically induced seizures in order to treat psychiatric illnesses.

6. In the 1880’s, there was a “war of currents” between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Tesla helped invent AC current and Edison helped invent DC current, and both wanted their currents to be popularized. AC won the battle because it’s safer and can be used over longer distances.

7. Iceland is the country that uses the most electricity annually. Their consumption is about 23% more than the U.S.

8. Static electricity occurs when the electrons from one object jump to another object.

9. The world’s biggest light bulb is located in Edison, New Jersey. It’s 14 feet tall, weighs eight tons, and sits on top of the Thomas Edison Memorial Tower.

10.Electricity travels in closed loops called “circuits.” It must have a complete path before the electrons can move. If a circuit is open, electrons can’t flow.

11.Electricity is present in our bodies – our nerve cells use it to pass signals to our muscles.

If you’re in need of electrical repair or installation, We’d love to help!

Preventing electrical shocks from happening to a beloved pet is not something usually thought of until an unfortunate tragedy occurs. Small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters are animals that constantly need to chew on something, as their teeth and nails never stop growing. If these animals do not have a specified object, then they will go looking for something to chew on. The last thing you want to have happen to your beloved pet is for them them chew on a live wire or an active cord.
WAYS TO PREVENT PETS FROM CHEWING ON ELECTRICAL CORDS
* When it comes to cats and dogs you can many times train and distract them from the allure of electrical cords with their own designated toys.
* For smaller animals consider putting them in a pen or setting up a gate to keep them away from electrical cords.
* Do not run cords long distances across a room or in open areas for pets to chew on.
* Plastic cord protectors can be a useful tool to protect electrical wires from being frayed by chewing.
* Place electrical wires out of reach.
Frayed cords and bare wires are dangerous as they can potentially start a house fire. While most wires are out of reach and hidden behind the walls of your home, it is important to remember to keep the cover on outlets to prevent pets from electrocution . If you are doing any renovations to your home, consider keeping your beloved pets in a separate area of the home for their safety. It only takes one accident.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET IS ELECTROCUTED
* If you suspect that your pet has been electrocuted then immediately turn off the power at the panel that is going to that particular outlet. A properly mapped panel is critical in the event of an emergency.
* Move your pet away from the damaged wire. Do not touch the damaged wired or your pet until the circuit is not longer active with electricity.
* Take your pet to the vet immediately.

We consider our pets family. The last thing you want to happen is for them to chew on a live wire or active cord. Keep your pets safe by taking preventive action to keep active wires away from them.

DID YOU KNOW?

THE DANGERS OF ALUMINUM WIRING
When performing a renovation or purchasing a home, a common concern is uncovering what will be behind the drywall. Some homes have not had their walls opened since they were built, meaning that the original wiring is still in place. The main reason this is a concern is because of aluminum wiring and the many hazards it can present. While aluminum was once a popular choice for wiring, it can present the following hazards for today’s homeowners:
REDUCED DURABILITY
Aluminum wiring is much softer than standard copper wiring, making it easier to cut and damage. This drastically increases the potential for wear over time as well, making it more prone to damage due to age or environmental conditions.
LOWER CONDUCTIVITY
When aluminum corrodes, it is not as conductive as copper. Copper that corrodes can remain conductive and continue to provide a standard flow of power. This is not the case for aluminum, as the standard flow of electricity can be greatly reduced or even stopped altogether. By losing conductivity, you may notice flickering or experience intermittent outages in your home. In some cases, this can even lead to a total lack of power from some outlets.
GREATER SENSITIVITY TO HEAT
Aluminum expands and contracts when it becomes hot. This constant flux in size can result in the connections between wires coming loose, making aluminum wiring more prone to overheating, disconnecting, and causing an electrical fire.

DID YOU KNOW?

The kitchen is often regarded as the heart of the home due to the amount of time owners, guests, and family members spend in the space. While kitchens are often a popular gathering place, they can become extremely busy and potentially hazardous in terms of electrical safety if proper precautions are not taken. As a provider of complete residential electrical services, the team at Bluetop electric knows how important electrical safety is for high-traffic areas like kitchens. That is why we have compiled a list of kitchen electrical safety tips to help you minimize the risk of hazards and keep the heart of your home safe.
Learn about some electrical improvements that can increase the value of your home.
3 TIPS TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF KITCHEN ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Kitchens can quickly become messy and crowded due to the amount of traffic and activity that occurs in them throughout the day. To keep your kitchen safe while reducing the risk of electrical hazards, consider the following tips:
1. MAINTAIN A DRY AND CLEAN KITCHEN
Preparing ingredients, cooking meals, and cleaning dishes can result in excess food waste and moisture on countertops and near outlets. All food waste and moisture should be kept away from outlets as they can cause an electrical shock or damage to appliances if they enter an outlet. To minimize the chances of this occurring, consider inserting a cover into any outlet that is rarely or never used. These covers will protect each outlet from accidental splashes, spills, or food waste, keeping them in pristine condition while minimizing the risk of shock or damage to connected appliances.
2. KEEP CABLES AWAY FROM HEAT
When cooking meals, space can quickly disappear in your kitchen. When this happens, you may end up using an appliance close to your stovetop and exposing the power cord to extreme heat. If power cords are damaged by heat or start to melt, this can result in an electrical fire or electrocution when plugging the appliance in. All power cables must be kept away from extreme heat to ensure that the protective layer on them stays in optimal condition. It is also a good idea to ensure that there is enough room behind your freezer or refrigerator for proper air circulation. If there is not enough room, it can become exceedingly hot behind these units and cause damage to their power cords.
3. DO NOT OVERLOAD YOUR OUTLETS
To ensure optimal safety, only one appliance should be plugged into each outlet. This is especially true for refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, and ovens, as they all require a large amount of power to run. Plugging another appliance into an occupied outlet can lead to a tripped breaker while potentially causing permanent damage to your appliances. If your current outlet layout or amount does not work for your needs, it may be time to hire a professional electrician to install new outlets.

DID YOU KNOW?

Never quickly “flip” breakers from on to off and back to on again when resetting a tripped breaker.

Allow at least 5 seconds between “flips” in each direction to protect sensitive compressors and electronics on that circuit.
