Xylitol is a naturally found sweetener found in birch trees. It’s not, however, metabolized into acids like sugar and doesn’t harm the teeth as sugar does. Xylitol has been used as a sweetener but in the Nordic countries, Korea, Japan, and in a small extent elsewhere it is used to prevent caries.
 
 
When we eat, the bacteria in the mouth become very active and produce acids that are harmful to the teeth. If this happens only occasionally during the day the tooth surface can stand it, but frequent acid attacks cause damage to the teeth surface. That’s how cavities start.
 
Chewing xylitol gum or pastilles after eating increases saliva production, which washes away some of the bacteria in the mouth. In addition, xylitol inhibits bacteria in the mouth from producing harmful acids and from multiplying. These mechanisms shorten the acidic attacks on the teeth after eating.
 
Alongside brushing the teeth and avoiding constant eating to avoid continued acid exposure of the teeth, using xylitol after and between meals is an established way to support strong teeth.
 
Tens of clinical studies have demonstrated that habitual xylitol consumption reduces counts of caries-associated Streptococcus mutans. Xylitol use also reduces the amount of plaque on the teeth. Dental plaque is risk factor of both caries and periodontal disease. The caries-reducing effect of adding xylitol gum to the daily diet has been well demonstrated in children with caries at the study baseline.

We are excited to announce a partnership with Dr. Säde Stenlund – a Finnish physician with expertise in public health. Her foundational interest is in health promotion i.e. how can we support health and prevent diseases even before they arise. Dr. Stenlund has been working for the past few years in health promotion, health care surveillance, and projects with dentists.

We will together spread knowledge about xylitol as an additional strategy to support healthy teeth. Xylitol reduces the harmful acids that are produced by bacteria in the mouth and thus protects the teeth. Xylitol is use after meals is very common among Finnish people.

The Ministry of Health of British Columbia states: The use of xylitol chewing gum has been shown to be effective as part of oral hygiene, particularly for those at moderate to high risk of developing dental caries. Many people do have at least a moderate risk of cavities and thus xylitol use could benefit a large number of residents in British Columbia.

Vappu, also known as Labour Day, was originally meant to honor labourers and high school graduates, however, nowadays it’s mostly viewed as a beloved national holiday which means the end of winter and the arrival of a warmer weather.

Vappu must haves are Tippaleipä & Munkki and these are served with Sima!

The celebrations begin the day before May Day, and typically people head out to the parks for a picnic – it’s one big feast!

FinnGoods is a family operated small business (est. 2012) located in Langley BC, Canada. We were both born and raised in Finland but something about an adventure in Canada just called for us. So, we made the move and started a new life in Canada!

After a few years of living here it became obvious that there was something that Canada (and us!) needed: Nordic goodies! After playing with the idea for a while, we decided that why not to do this ourselves! We could start bringing the very best of Finnish and Swedish goodies into the country - and share the Nordic Way of Living all across North America. And oh, what a ride it has been!

Since day one, we have been so grateful that we can bring these experiences into people’s lives. The connection we have with each one of you is what makes FinnGoods the company that it is today.
