Newborn Milia 🤍

Milia are tiny white bumps that most often appear on a newborns face. These are very common harmless bumps on your baby’s face that will clear up on their own within a few weeks.

These are not pimples and it’s very important not to pick or try to pop them. There is no swelling or redness associated with milia. No need to apply creams or lotion, these little bumps will go away on their own.

⁉️ What is a mucous plug? ⁉️

A mucus plug is a formation of mucus in the cervical canal meant to protect the cervix from bacteria and infection. As labor approaches, you will lose your mucus plug. This may happen several hours or several weeks before you go into labor.

The time between losing the mucus plug and going into labor varies. Some women who pass a noticeable mucus plug go into labor within hours or days, while others may not go into labor for a few weeks.

What to do when/if you loose your mucous plug?

💛 Note the colour: Clear/yellowish/pink/red/brown are colours you may see in it.

💛 Note the time and put a new pad on if you think it might be amniotic fluid or are unsure.

❗️ (**If you think your water might have broken, put a pad on and come into hospital for assessment or contact your health care provider.**) ❗️

💛 Take a photo of you’re unsure of what it is.

💛 Mention it next time you see your Health Care Provider.

💛 Relax- passing the mucous plug could mean baby is coming today, or in a few days or weeks still!

💛Loosing a mucous plug is not a reason to come into hospital, but the hospital will always assess you if you are worried/concerned/unsure.

🍑 Lanugo 🍑

Did you know that cute peach fuzz your baby is born with is called Lanugo?

Some babies are born with more than other babies, especially if baby is born premature. Lanugo starts to grow on baby in the second trimester and for many babies this downy body hair mostly disappears before birth. For other babies, it disappears in the weeks after birth.

Do you have a "High Needs Baby"? Support for parents with a high needs baby is available. Please contact PostPartum Support international to find out more.

This group is led by trained peer facilitators for parents of “high needs” newborns to 12-month-old babies. All babies have needs and depend on their caregivers, yet some babies have more needs than others. “High needs baby” is not a medical term or diagnosis, but it describes babies with some characteristics: constant crying (for several hours in a row), difficulty soothing, and easily overstimulated. A highly sensitive or high-needs baby might not sleep without being held, cry for three hours every evening, or get restless and frustrated when transitioning from one environment to another. We know that parents of “colicky” or high-needs babies can feel isolated, exhausted, and overwhelmed. You are not alone, and we are here to help. Crying babies are welcome too!

If you are looking for a group for parenting a medically fragile baby or child, please check out our group specifically for those parents.

A newborn's stomach capacity changes drastically in the first few days and weeks! 🍼🤱

It should be self-evident that very small people will have very small stomachs but you might be surprised just how limited the capacity of a newborn’s stomach is.

Before birth your baby never felt hunger because the placenta provided constant nutrition. After birth small frequent feedings help your baby transition to an intermittent rather than a constant feeding pattern. To make this transition easier for your baby, your breasts provide small amounts of very thick, concentrated milk, called colostrum on Day 1.

A brand new baby’s stomach does not stretch on days 1 and 2. By Day 3 the stomach starts to expand to hold more milk. Interestingly, it is between day 3-5 that the milk volume starts to increase for most mothers. As your milk supply increases, your baby’s stomach expands slowly to be able to hold more milk.

When your baby is latched well and is drinking effectively, your milk supply increases to keep up with your baby’s needs. In this way, your baby stimulates your breasts to make more milk as your baby’s appetite increases.

Pre Eclampsia⚠️

Pre eclampsia is high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Protein in the urine is a common sign of the disease. Pre-eclampsia usually goes away after you give birth. But symptoms may last a few weeks or more and can get worse after delivery. Not all high blood pressure is pre eclampsia.

Signs and Symptoms:

- High Blood Pressure
- Protein in Urine
- Persistent Head Ache
- Blurred Vision/Spots In Vision
- “Belly” Pain / Upper Right Tummy Pain
- Swelling to Extremities and Face
- Rapid Weight Gain
- No Symptoms (Mild Pre eclampsia)

Who is at Risk?

- Those with chronic blood pressure, kidney problems or diabetes
- Those with personal or family history of high blood pressure or pre eclampsia
- Pregnant with multiples
- First pregnancy, or first pregnancy with new partner
- Younger then 21 or older then 35

⚠️ Pre eclampsia is usually found during regular prenatal checkups. Some times the blood pressure can be managed with medication for a while and sometimes the only “cure” is to delivery the baby. It’s important to always discuss any new symptoms you’re having in your pregnancy with your midwife or doctor and stay on track with your routine prenatal visits.

Hellooo Sunshine! ☀️
When you are pregnant, dehydration can happen faster and can be more serious, so drink up! 💦
Here are some helpful tips to ensure you stay hydrated :
✅ Ensure 8-12 cups of fluids per day
✅ Avoid caffeinated drinks
✅ Carry a water bottle around with you
✅ Avoid being out in mid day- when it’s hottest
✅ Take cool shower if feeling overheated
✅ Suck on ice chips or take frequent small sips if you are experiencing nausea
✅ Wear loose, breathable clothing
✅ Stay in the shade when possible
✅ Look at the colour of your urine to find out if you’ve been drinking enough fluids. Urine should be colourless or pale yellow when properly hydrated. See next photo for a guide 💛
✅ If you are unable to stay hydrated call your midwife/ doctor/ or go to hospital for an assessment

🍼 There are many things to consider when choosing which bottles you will offer your baby.

🍼 If you are breastfeeding your baby, ni**le shape is very important when choosing which ni**le/bottle combo you will use if/when you would like to bottle feed. (expressed milk or formula)

New borns do not need a bath more then 1-2 times a week.

Sometimes a “bed bath” is needed between baths due to super poopy diaper or big spit- but try to keep the full baths with soap minimal in the newborn period.

Newborns are quick to get dry skin from over bathing. Soaps can strip the natural oils from their skin- leaving their delicate skin peeling or agitated. Always use fragrance free soaps for baby.

Once baby is starting to crawl or eat, you may start bathing more often if needed.
