All it takes is one bite! Protect yourself

Barbecues, outdoor fireplaces, and portable fire pots are central to many relaxing moments and gatherings in the Summer. However, the use of these devices can sometimes lead to disastrous consequences. To ensure these moments remain enjoyable and safe, it is essential to take a few precautions.

Cooking on the grill this weekend?

It’s important to place your barbecue:
• Outside and in a well-ventilated area.
• Far away from combustible materials, doors, and windows.
• On an even surface to reduce the risk of tipping over.

Inspect the grill and barbecue brushes before each use. The metal bristles of the brush can detach and adhere to the grill during cleaning. They can stick to food and be accidentally swallowed, potentially causing serious injuries to the throat or digestive tract.
It is advised to:
• Regularly replace your brush.
• Discard it immediately if bristles are about to fall out or stick to the grill.
• Consider using brushes without metal bristles.

Also:
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using the barbecue. These explain how to use, clean, and maintain it.
• Check burners or tubes near them to ensure they are not obstructed.
• If connectors or hoses are damaged and leaking, do not use a faulty barbecue.
• Remove grease deposits from briquettes.

Planning an evening around the fire? Beware of flame jetting…

If you use liquid or gel fuel to refill a firepit, fire pot, or a fondue fuel reservoir, take adequate precautions. When these fuels are poured onto the flame of a burning or still-hot device, v***r inside the container can ignite. Subsequently, flames may be forcefully expelled towards people or objects.

Before pouring fuel:
• Ensure the flame is extinguished. Use a snuffer or similar device.
• Allow the device to completely cool down before refilling.

On June 7th, 2024, we will be holding a seniors consultation from 9:30am to 12:15pm at the Senior Wellness Centre.
We have hired Eric Walling (and his team), a consultant firm from Quebec City, who will be using your comments to create a report.
This report will help us as we continue to work with our Laval public Health and Social Services partners and other community organizations over the next 5 to 6 years in adapting their services to meet the needs of Laval's English-speaking seniors. It will also be used to work with different levels of government and funders.

This will be used to update the Seniors Health Promotion model and ultimately improve care and services.

The Youth and Parents Agape Association, in partnership with Giant Steps, will be offering a free online
2-day province-wide symposium entitled Autism in the Early Years. This symposium for parents and
professionals will feature keynote presentations, a panel on autism service navigation across Quebec,
and sessions on communication support at home, parent training, empowerment, and more. This
initiative is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Community Health and Social
Services Network. The conference will be held in English.
