Allied Arts Council Lethbridge

Providing Leadership in Advancing and Enhancing the Arts in Lethbridge and southern Alberta.

The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge was established on March 20, 1958, with the objectives to encourage arts activities in Lethbridge and the surrounding district; to coordinate activities of member organizations; and to cooperate with persons, groups and organizations in the promotion of arts activities.

Public Art Lethbridge is excited to announce a new vinyl installation at the Multicultural Centre. This piece is titled "Embodied" by local artist Kelaine Devine.

The awning above the south entrance features 54 languages and 278 words about home, community, belonging, and celebration. The words themselves fade in and out of the sky and the silhouettes, peeking in and out of the design, some triggering recognition, others curiosity. The background of blue sky and clouds references Lethbridge’s skies and memorable weather. The silhouettes are intentionally devoid of identifying characteristics so that they may represent a multitude of peoples.

It would be impossible to represent all of Earth’s 7,000 languages but the artist hopes that the artwork provides a moment of connection and belonging.

Come take a look at the "Embodied" next time you're passing by the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association! Location: 421 6 Ave South, Lethbridge

September is the Month of the Artist in Alberta. The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge is excited to share Part 2 of an animation project titled "Ears" by local artist Shanell Papp! We will be releasing subsequent parts in the following weeks!

Shanell Papp maintains an intensive studio art practice, working in textiles, sculpture, photography, drawing and recently learning generative AI, hairwork, rug tufting, and machine knitting. Papp’s work has earned a large following online for an anatomical model made of crochet. Her work redefines the boundaries of Textile Craft and Fine Art. At all times grotesque, painfully funny, laboured, and insightful. With interests in crime, anatomy, funeral practices, cartoons, psychology and folk practices. The work refers to many things, but remains true to her voice. Papp lives and works in Lethbridge and can be found with her cats, her close-knit family or at the Public Library. Find her on Instagram .papp

This project was made possible with a grant from AMAAS Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society and funding from the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge. Be sure to take in all the great art events and activities during the Month of the Artist and Arts Days!

A very special Lethbridge Arts Days celebration is taking place next Friday, September 13! Don't forget to mark your calendars!

People in the Window Celebration
Friday, September 13, 8:00 – 10:00pm
Rotary Square, Casa

Discover Lethbridge’s most secret work of public art! People in the Window by Lethbridge artist David Hoffos’ work was installed on the west side of Casa in 2014. This artwork is only visible at night and holograms of festival-goers interact and converse fading in and out as those entering Casa pass by.

Celebrate 10 years of this remarkable work. We will be joined by Lethbridge's four-piece, funk-tet ADEQUATE! The AAC cash bar will be out on the square. Art & Craft Pizza will be slinging artisanal slices from their food truck. Mystery and art will abound!

This site-specific intervention in the Casa display window combines and develops some of the illusion techniques that David Hoffos has been experimenting with for the past 20 years. The video portraits were shot in July 2014 at the South Country Fair, Fort Macleod’s long-running yearly music and arts festival. “Within this casual and friendly atmosphere I found a diverse group of participants that I hoped would suggest both a tight-knit “family” or sub-culture and also a cross-section of their larger community,” says Hoffos.

This work is on a long-term loan from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The People in the Window is a three-channel silent video and mixed media installation, presenting a ghostly illusion of presence and movement in a darkened window.

We are excited to announce a new Lethbridge Public Art mural titled "Young at Heart" by Alex Kwong! This mural is located on the north facing wall of MSK Clinic (311 8 St South).

This mural, completed in the artist’s trademark photorealism style, depicts five different facial expressions of a child captured over the first 18 months of their life. It is this pure childlike energy and zest for life that plays a large part in keeping us young at heart while we age. It is the aim of this artwork to display the unhindered and expressive emotions of a child, reminding and inspiring adult viewers to reconnect with their emotions and their inner child in recognizing the goodness this life has to offer.

Come take a look at Alex Kwong's mural next time you're downtown, and keep an eye out for more Public Art murals popping up!
