I’m finally back at the easel after weeks of being ill and then preparing for the new school year. I thought I’d finally finish this one up! It’s another study of the winter hills and sky at retreat center. Do you think I should try doing this composition in a larger format?

Towards the tail end of this past winter, I noticed how the colours, textures, and shapes of the winter season were deeply resonating with my soul. In February, I came to the realization that a long-held dream may be coming to an end. An image came to my mind from childhood of taking the ash out of the fireplace, putting it in a copper bucket, and trudging out into the snowy field surrounded by darkened trees. I would dump the ash into the field to become part of next year’s crop. A giving back of something borrowed and used. What once was green and alive lay in a pile of cracked and crumbled bits of charcoal and grey lime mixed with ice crystals. These colours and textures formed the visual language of this series.
On Saturday I dropped off 3 large paintings to for The Landscape Show! The show starts tomorrow and goes until August 10th.
Did you know that I got into Westland Gallery this Spring? Here I am standing next to one of my paintings in Westland's ApARTment, their upstairs gallery. Come check it out!

This painting is based off of a photo I took this winter in a rolling farm field south of Cambridge, Ontario. After a tough couple of weeks of work and other things, my husband and I were on a retreat getting some much needed rest and time with God. I always bring my camera with me when I travel, but I don’t always get the privilege of seeing really stunning sunsets like we did the second night we were there. It was frigid in the wind, but I managed to stay out there for almost an hour taking photos as the sunset evolved. The reference photo for this painting was taken close to when the sun was about to disappear behind the treeline. The purples and yellows were quite vibrant in contrast to the soft wintery and wind-whipped clouds. This contrast made this painting a fun challenge as I tried to make it both "sparkly" and soft at the same time.

I’m not sure what to name this new oil painting. Any suggestions?
My prayer for the childless was recently published in along with a photo from my Empty Nursery series. I hope this prayer will be a blessing to families, friends, and communities unsure of how to pray for those struggling with this journey. The holiday season is particularly hard for people struggling with childlessness. After muscling through, I'm emotionally exhausted and I'm sure others are too. If you have a minute, please take some time to pray for those in your life who are struggling with childlessness:
A Prayer for the Childless Among Us
Lord, be with those who are walking the lonely path of childlessness.
Tread softly with those who carry pictures in their minds of biological children (with his nose and her eyes) that they will never hold.
Weep with them when they’ve tried every doctor, every treatment, jumped through every adoption hoop, considered every heartbreaking situation, every fertility option, and were rejected, unmatched, still not pregnant, or have miscarried again.
Be patient with them when the broken dream of being a parent at a certain time, in a certain way, tastes bitter and turns their downcast eyes away from You.
Protect their hearts when others’ baby announcements salt their open wounds only to be followed by first birthdays, first days of school, and first jobs.
Grant them strength for uncomfortably quiet Christmas mornings, Mother’s Days without wildflowers, and Father’s Days without construction paper ties.
Silence the questions and the unsolicited advice of the prejudiced and naïve whose words add to the shame.
Send disciples under their care so their knowledge of the world and the Word doesn’t go to waste.
Fill their loneliness with friendships and community that will persist with intention.
Bring wholeness to them and their families with Your healing hand.
Gently teach them the melody of their future song as You lay the foundations of their joy,
filling their home with the community of Christ (Isaiah 54:1-8)
or giving them children of their own (1 Samuel 2:1-10).
Amen

Winter Nest Bowl & Cup
The nest of last spring lay dormant, frozen. Slivers of ice cut through the claybody, deteriorating what was once a warm home that held life. Like the ruins of a castle, it is both sad and stunning.

Part of the Wilderness Women Series, this painting has a special place in my heart because of where it was painted. It reminds me of the many contented hours spent in the beautiful library of . I would take breaks from reading and writing to paint and process my deep questions and new learnings. Like a time machine, looking at it brings me back to that place of safety, peace, community, and beauty. I hope those feelings continue with the piece as it settles into it’s new home.

Some beautiful moments from the Live Painting event last Saturday at the Tillsonburg Station Arts Centre. Thank you to everyone who came out to see the art, ask questions, and enjoy each other's company on a sunny November day. It was lovely to talk about my process with you, see you interact with the art, and engage with each other through story. I felt so blessed by you presence.
The show is up for one more week. I hope you get a chance to see it.

Opening Night for my show (Be)Longing was wonderful. I felt incredibly loved and supported. Thank you so much to everyone who came out and everyone who wished they could have and sent me their best wishes and prayers. I am so grateful for this community. I am honoured by the space you made for me in your lives.
Here are just some of the amazing photos taken by photographer Aveleen Schinkle.
Spring Nest Bowl & Cup
Creating nest forms has been cathartic for me, a physical manifestation of the real life work of preparing for and waiting for a child that is hoped for. The colours for the Spring Nest Bowl & Cup are drawn from the deep turquoise of robins eggs when they are first laid and the earthy oranges of dark wet leaves when they finally emerge from the snow.
Currently on display from November 3 to December 1, 2023 as part of the Empty Nursery Series.
"Creating Space" is a series of hand thrown vessels made to accept broken pottery shards of other vessels. After the vessel is thrown and trimmed, space is cut away to accommodate the orphaned piece. After firing and glazing is complete, the pottery shards are fused into place with kintsugi. The more specific name for this technique is yobitsugi, or "called into mending." Here is the poem that accompanies this series of work:
Creating Space
Hearts locked tight
like our houses,
gated like our
communities.
Silent streets greet
the sojourner,
the wanderer,
the orphaned
the newcomer,
the lost.
But we are called,
called into mending,
called into yobi-tsugi,
called into friendship,
into hospitality,
into welcoming
the stranger.
Called into making
space,
into wrapping
The Other
in gold.
There is sacrifice,
a breaking open,
an acknowledgement
of our own cracks.
How beautiful
we could be together.
For it is only
together
that we will find
healing.

My dad built me this giant easel after I graduated from the HBFA program. He was inspired by the easels in York’s painting studios that are 3x this size! I was painting pretty large at the time and needed something that would support large canvases. Dad to the rescue! I haven’t always been able to find the time and energy to paint large, but when I have, I’ve been so grateful for this gift!
This weekend, I took a little time to spruce up this corner of my studio, to make it cleaner, brighter, and more functional. The big easel got a fresh coat of paint. I can’t wait to get going on my next painting and mess it up ;)
