Western Men's Varsity Squash Team

The Mustangs went deep yesterday, after sitting an injured player, multiple blood breaks, no lets, and a significant amount of fist pumps, the boys unfortunately fell short in the National Semi Final to Columbia University 7-2. Today we play in the 3/4 Playoff against number one seeded Dartmouth College.

Today is an emotional day for the boys, as a very special era of Western Squash comes to a close. Today, Three Mustang Seniors suit up one last time in their purple and whites.

As we say goodbye to three of our Senior Leaders we look back on how much they've developed over the past four years not only as players but as men. Their impact and presence will live on through the hearts of their teammates, forever.

One last ride, one last mustangs on three, lets finish what we started.

Western Mustang, Canada's Sole Representative in the US Collegiate Squash Association, is playing in the U.S. National Finals this weekend at Harvard University.

The boys secured a convincing 7-2 win against George Washington in the Quarter Final of the Hoehn Cup yesterday afternoon. Today they will take on Columbia University in the semi final at 3:30pm for a spot in the National Final.

The team is also proud to announce that they have been nominated for the Sloane Award for Sportsmanship - a unique honor in U.S. College Squash and the Western Mustangs first ever nomination.

2020 SEASON Update

Western 6 - 3 Franklin & Marshall College
Western 4 - 5 University of Virginia
Western 2 - 7 University of Rochester
Western 7 - 2 St. Lawrence University

We all knew UVA (University of Virginia) would be a close match and sure enough it came down to four matches a piece in a best of 9 format, with Sophomore Will Kuhn at #9 playing for it all. The team played outstanding overall, some guys in particular (Elliot Hunt Brett Schille) played some of the best squash of their lives.

Despite the home crowd at UVA Charlottesville squash center, we fought tough and played hard. We will look back on the match with pride, albeit with fire in our bellies as we were so close, and want to be on the other side of those close matches come finals.

Definitely one of the more memorable trips the guys have had, and as many athletes approach the end of their 4 year run with Western Squash, it is satisfying to see this program fully support and provide the resources for them to push to the end and succeed.

4-0 Start to Season

End of 2019 SEASON Update

Feeling at home in Toronto being the only Canadian Team in the NCAA Squash League, the Western Men’s varsity squash team opened the season with a strong 8-1 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy at the Mayfair Parkway Club.

This past weekend the Mustangs traveled to Ithaca, New York to play against some of the best college squash programs in the United States. They continued their dominance with three convincing wins over Cornell University (7-2), St. Lawrence University (7-2) and Hobart College (9-0). This has been one of the most historic starts to a Mustang season in the past decade.

Three years ago (2016) the team was ranked #25 in the US, they have now reached as high as #10 in the US and plan on cracking the top 8 (Division 1) by the end of the 2020 season. The team is coached and lead by Former Mustang Captain James Van Staveren and Current Captains David Mill, Matthew Henderson and Jackson Kay.

Western Mustangs start the season off strong with an 8-1 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy.

Special shout-out to three of our Freshmen Mustangs who all went undefeated in their U.S Collegiate Debuts Mitchell Kahnert , Douglas Kosciukiewicz and Taylor Carrick

The next set of matches will be against Cornell University University of Rochester St. Lawrence University Hobart College Statesmen on November 14th and 15th in New York.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Western Men's Varsity Team is very pleased to announce New 2019-20 Head Coach James Van Staveren, Former Western Captain, Ontario Open Champion, Member of Team Canada at World University Games, was part of a Hoehn Cup (9th) Championship Western Team at CSA Finals, during his four years he claimed two All-American Individual awards and had several notable Professional Squash finishes. He brings a unique tactical and technical expertise to the leadership team this year and is poised to push the team to their elite potential both on and off the court.
