Well, the time has come for Stan Portley’s to retire from our Brick-and-Mortar location at 2509 Main Street in Lambeth. We started our journey 24 years ago in Port Stanley as an Antique and Retail store selling giftware and painting furniture (in addition to full-time jobs). I know there is a lot of off-white furniture in cottages and homes along the north shore of Lake Erie that came from our hands. At the time we opened we both had full-time positions Bobbie as an Account Representative selling corrugated packaging and John who worked in the automotive sector designing and building robotic and automated lines and equipment. A little while later we took the Real estate courses and ran the Royal LePage Triland office in Port Stanley. We discovered Chalk Paint in 2010 with the Van Gogh line developed by Kathy Van Gogh an actual descendant of Theo, Vincent's’ brother and became obsessed with the newfound ease these paints and accessories gave to reviving and re-loving furniture and cabinetry. We even spent several times studying at Studio van Gogh in Vancouver and with Bruce Afflack in Toronto. We occupied 4 different locations in London as we knew this was where the business would thrive. Van Gogh rebranded to Mango Paint, we added Fusion Mineral Paint, Cottage Paint and became the local distributors for Iron Orchid Designs wonderful products which elevate your painted projects to the next level.
The store is officially closing July 31, 2024.
We would love to see you all a few more times before these doors close. Come in and check out some of the bargains we have as we clear out some of our product lines.
You will probably still find us dabbling with a small booth at the Tillsonburg Antique Mall and our Iron Orchid Design Products will be available at a London location to be announced as well as online at www.stanportleys.com.
We would like to thank you, our loyal customers and followers for sharing this journey with us as we move on to the next adventures in our lives.

Xavier is an inviting warm grey.
Pair this pleasing grey with Alexandra for a soft feminine look, or pair with Teegan for a fresh pop of colour. Of course, this colour also pairs perfectly with a palette of neutrals as well (like Yvonne, Sophia or Noah).
Fun Fact! This colour is from the original Van Gogh collection of colours (formerly called: Pajama Weather) and has been dubbed by customers at Stan Portleys as the perfect 'greige'

3 Important Tips for Caring for Your Paint Brushes!
Investing in a good quality brush makes all the difference when it comes to furniture painting…and keeping those brushes in good condition ensures a successful & enjoyable experience.
Whether you are using any of the beautiful in the Cottage or Mango Paint Lines or the luxurious Staalmeester One Brushes, these 3 tips will ensure your brushes will last for years and many projects to come!
1. Don’t overload
The most common way paint brushes lose their shape and effectiveness is by overloading it with paint. All the Canadian made paints that Stan Portley’s carry, covers like a dream & a little goes a long way, so there is no need to fill your brush from tip to base with paint—that is just a mess waiting to happen!
Instead, make sure you leave at least an inch or more (depending on the size and length of your brush) from the metal base clean & dry. Too much buildup of old dry paint at the base of your brush causes the bristles to fray and lose its shape. A general rule of thumb we use is ¼ to a ½ of the length of the brush depending on the size of the surface you are painting.
2. clean your brushes well
The bonus of the brushes that Stan Portley’s carry are that they clean up beautifully without needing any harsh cleaners or chemicals—a bit of warm running water is all you’ll need!
If the bristles are a little dry or crusty, massage a drop of mild dish soap or Fusion brush soap into the bristles to help loosen them up—be sure to rinse all the suds away too!
Always wash your brushes with the bristles pointed down toward the sink basin and run your fingers through. This will help keep water from soaking into the metal base which can cause rusting and the bristles to fray.
3. dry them upside down
Keeping moisture away from the metal base of your brush is important to prevent rusting—so hang them to dry bristles down.
We use a magnetic knife strip here at the studio, but a little bit of string and a cupboard door works just as well!
Once the bristles are fully dried, they can be stored lying flat or bristles up.
Remember to pat or wipe the brush & brush handle too to remove any excess water.
Happy Painting!

5 Must Have Furniture Painting Supplies Every Reclaimer Needs in Their Toolbox!
Hey there, Reclaimers!
Today, I am sharing the 5 MUST HAVE supplies every furniture painter needs for their toolbox. These are all items we swear by here at the studio and are guaranteed to be well loved additions for your reclaiming projects!
1. A Good Quality and Versatile Paint Brush
A good quality paint brush can make or break any furniture painting experience…that’s why we have brushes from the top paint companies and brush manufacturers.
These come in both natural and synthetic bristle brushes provide a super smooth finish and leave virtually no brush strokes when applying Mango Paint or Tabletop Finish or any of the paints from Cottage Paint or
With a 1”, 1-1/2”, 2”, 3” and 4” brush available, you’ll have one to suit every size (even artist style round and narrow from Cottage or Fusion pint) so when painting your project, you have a number of brushes on your list!
2. An Apron to Get Messy
You’ll always be prepared for when that creative urge strikes…and you’ll find that over time, your apron will become a work of art itself!
3. A Micro Fibre Paint Roller
Ok, seriously—this is our FAVOURITE tool!
For the smoothest and most flawless finish, a micro fibre roller is your best friend! Instead of using a brush to paint all your large flat areas…ROLL ‘EM
4. Flexible Sanding Sponges & Sanding Blocks (and wet/dry sandpaper)
At Stan Portley's we have various Sanding Sponges & Sanding Blocks which are an absolute LIFESAVER when it comes to prepping and distressing your furniture!
Flexible, bendable & super long lasting—you’ll wish you had switched from that flimsy sandpaper sooner, though even Sandpaper itself has a niche to fill.
5. A Handy Paint Can Opener
The days of using a spoon or screwdriver to open your paint cans are OVER! I was totally guilty of this and I’m here to say that you deserve an upgrade, honey.
Our favourite saying here at the studio is “work smarter, not harder!”
So, which of these supplies will you be adding to your toolbox first!?

Happy Painting!

How To Create a Stain/ Wash with Mango Paint Part 2
Today, I’m going to break down the basics of how to create a stained or “wash” look using Mango Paint—you’ve been asking, and I’m here to give you the steps in 2 parts. The First part was at 7:00 pm on Friday June 2. This second part at 12:00 pm Saturday June 3.
We recently reclaimed this old pine end table using Charlie from the Mango Paint line as a stain for the top. We were looking for a rich, warm brown to complement the base
which we painted in Noah. Charlie is our favourite Mango Paint colour to use as a base for most stain/ wash projects as it is a gorgeous, chocolatey brown which is super versatile!
We have created this super simple step-by-step guide to creating a stained look with Mango Paint for you to follow along with!

Step 3: APPLICATION
Now for the fun part…
Once your stain is mixed well to your desired shade, dip a 4” Ultra Soft brush into your stain & offload any excess onto the rim of your container to avoid any drippy drops.
Then, in the direction of the grain, gently brush the stain across the surface of your piece one section at a time. Once the section is covered, use a clean dry cloth to wipe the stained area—this will simultaneously push the stain into the wood & remove any excess.
Repeat this process to complete your entire surface.

Step 4: TIME TO SEAL IT
Just like painting any piece of furniture, you want to make sure you seal & protect all your hard work—with either the Beeswax or Tabletop Finish.
We sealed this lovely side table with the Beeswax Finish (which is our absolute FAVE!), but for any super high traffic projects (dining tabletops…), we recommend using the Tabletop Finish.
Once your stained surface is fully dried, simply apply the beeswax with a waxing brush or clean dry rag. Be sure to wipe off all the excess beeswax with a clean rag until there is no build up or residue left on the surface.
And VOILA!
Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box—you can water down ANY shade from the Mango Paint line to create a stain/ wash!

How To Create a Stain/ Wash with Mango Paint Part 1!
Today, I’m going to break down the basics of how to create a stained or “wash” look using Mango Paint—you’ve been asking, and I’m here to give you the steps in 2 parts. This one at 7:00 pm on Friday June 2. The second part at 12:00 pm Saturday June 3.

We have created this super simple step-by-step guide to creating a stained look with Mango Paint for you to follow along with!
Step 1: PREP
Prepping your piece will be the most important part—it can be laborious, but it is so worth it if your vision is to keep some natural wood elements on your piece!
Using a palm sander or orbital sander, use a 180-220 grit sandpaper to gradually remove the original varnish or finish until you are down to the bare wood.
This can get a bit tricky if your piece is quite detailed or has a lot of edges…those are usually the pieces we opt to paint solid overall!

Step 2: MAKING THE STAIN/ WASH
Only 2 ingredients: Mango Paint & water!
You have total control over how dark or light your stain is depending on how much water you mix with your paint!
Our advice is to start with a 50-50 mix (equal parts paint & water) and test on a sample board or stir stick to get an idea of the tone. You can always add a touch more paint if you want a darker/ richer look, or more water for a lighter look.

Robin, a Red Like No Other!
Well, hi!
I’m so excited to share this stunning transformation with you…
Recently restyled this antique record cabinet using the colour Robin from the Mango Paint line—and one just LOVE how she turned out!
Take a look at her before one got started…as you can see, she needed a LOT of TLC. (See picture 1)
Robin was the perfect colour choice—a rich red to update this poor piece into a statement piece.
One knew we would never be able to fix her up and make her perfect, so we decided to use that as one’s inspiration and let her imperfections be the star.
By giving her heavy distress and sealing her with the French Caffeine beeswax, one was able to accentuate all of her rustic details!
The best advice one always gives for restyling old furniture is to let it’s character shine through. Sometimes, trying to make a vintage or well-loved piece look perfect or brand new makes the finished product feel a little “out of place”.
So don’t be afraid to paint a statement piece and let it tell its own story!

Repurposing What You Already Have. Part 2
So here it is. You aren’t going to believe what one did with the hutch top:
One sees so many of these hutch tops go to waste—but by adding legs, you can create a whole new and functional piece of furniture! Like a bookcase/display cabinet:
Painting the hutch top in “Jocelyn” & “Yvonne” from the Mango Paint line and applying a decorative stencil to the back panel really makes this a statement piece!
And don’t worry, we will hook you up with a quick tutorial blog on our stencil process for this piece soon too :-)
So, I want to start off with a challenge to you to think outside of the box when it comes to your next (or first) furniture reclaiming project:
Think of re-doing instead of buying new :-)

Stan Portleys, Where Art & Craft Meet.

The Story: In 2001 Stan Portleys – Timeless & Unique – was born in the back of a store, in Port Stanley. We grew and moved to a new location in Port Stanley and for 14 years, we served our customers from that location. When we first started, it was vintage and antique furniture, off-white painted furniture, vintage linens and silver, and a small amount of new giftware that we sold. Over the years Stan Portleys has evolved into a destination for unique gift and home décor items, Fusion Mineral Paint, Cottage Paint and van Gogh Furniture Paintology Paint & Accessories, IOD Design Transfers, Stamps and Moulds, Muddarittaville Stencils, and OUR PAINTED FURNITURE. We also comb the top distributors for unique hardware in the way of k***s, pulls, hooks, brackets etc. in Cast iron and other quality finishes. In 2011 we expanded to London to better enable us to serve the students of our workshops and this also gave us a permanent home for doing our workshops. Here we morphed into a busy hub for anyone interested in the art of painting furniture and collectables and creating special finishes for walls. In 2014, we had an opportunity to sell our building in Port Stanley and closed our Port Stanley store and took the remaining inventory and went looking for an even bigger space in London. We found it in a 4,000 square ft. showroom in the south end of London, and in 2015 moved our giftware, art, vintage hardware and, of course, finished painted furniture and paint inventory into the new larger location at 1770 Ernest Avenue, just south of Southdale Rd. In the fall of 2019 we decided to change our focus, more to the providing of products and information on how to do things and just doing custom furniture and also we changed our location. We are now at 2509 Main Street, London (Lambeth) which is at the very west end of Wharncliffe Rd., At one time we were the best-kept secret of London, but as word gets out more and more people are finding the fun of all the uniqueness of Stan Portleys.
The Style: We like to think we have a friendly countenance and like our logo of Stan Portley we see ourselves still as small-town friendly people. Our move to Lambeth helps us to continue in this way. With the onset of the Covid19 virus, we had to make some drastic changes. Initially, we were closed and doing only product porch pickups and dropoffs. When we reopened we removed most of the items that had to do with workshops and creating what I now call Cofid19 Contemporary Store Design in our store layout. Many things were done to create a comfortable environment for our customers. From hand sanitizer at entrance and exits as well as appropriate signage, Sneeze Screens and set new policies to do with social distancing, face masks and shields and sanitizing of items that are frequently touched by customers. With this change, we have moved our custom furniture painting to our home where is plenty of room for that and also for when we can bring back and operate our poplar how-to classes from a full calendar of workshops from which you will come away with a creation; such as a rustic sign, a tray, crate or farmhouse clock. Other workshops cover a range of paintology techniques such as barnboard, suede, rustic tin, marble plaster, even tie-dye finishes.

The Paint: Two magnificent vintage cupboards greet visitors to the showroom, presenting a colourful array of paints produced by Fusion Mineral Paint, Cottage Paint and van Gogh Fossil paint. There are other tools of the trade available, including brushes in all shapes and sizes, stencils, transfers, stamps, moulds, trowels, rollers and even spackling compound.

DIY: Painted furniture has come a long way since the days of shabby chic and milk paint. For one thing, it’s now easier for the DIYer to make something look professionally finished. The new Fusion Mineral Paints have an acrylic factor that eliminates the need for a top coat, and there are more professional videos out there. However, you still need to check with your in-store professional about some of the more wild claims that are being made. All the brands offer artistic enhancement products such as liming wax, which add depthe and elegance to finishes.

Trending: John and Bobbie Robinson are much-published master trainers and mentors in paintology and faux finishing.to bring these back as well as our popular craft workshops as the government allows us to open up more.
