It is with heavy hearts that we share another passing in the musical community. Though Sixto “Sugarman” Rodriguez never achieved U.S. fame or success, unbeknownst to him, he had become a huge star in South Africa in the 1970s and an inspiration for the anti-apartheid movement. Decades later, in 1997, long after he’d given up on his musical career, a dedicated South African fan began to search for him eventually locating him in Detroit which led to the poignant hit documentary film, Searching for Sugarman. The success of the film helped “Sugarman” relaunch his musical career and tour the world. Rodriguez said, "It has been an odyssey..." and that journey will never be forgotten.
