Did you know Turner Crescent in Summerside is named in honour of Private Frederick Arthur Turner? He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment in London in 1939. on July 24th 1943 he was killed in action, in Sicily near Nissoria. He was a regimental signaller and part of a command group accompanying the CO, Lieutenant Colonel Crowe, to establish an advance post. While advancing forward, clearing the crest of a knoll, a machine gun opened fire. Colonel Crowe was struck and seriously wounded. "Your son (Fred) then did one of the bravest things I have ever seen in my life. He left his place of cover and crawled to Col. Crowe's side to rendered him assistance." "It was there he met his death." Both men were killed. Described as "gallant and unselfish" "an example to all of us." "I have never met a more honest, brave or noble man than Fred." He was 22 years old.

Monday morning there is a yard material collection, if you have any have it at the curb by 7:00 am on Monday so you don’t miss it when they come by. Collection will be any time up to and including next Saturday.
The City asks that you place plant trimmings, brush, leaves in kraft paper bags, garbage cans or certified compostable bags. NO grass clippings. Cut brush to a length of less than 1 m (39”) and tie in bundles with string or rope. Limbs must be less than 10 cm (4”) in diameter. Goodfellow Court in Summerside is named in honour of Warrant Officer 2nd Class James Richard Goodfellow. He was the Wireless Air Gunner on a Halifax bomber of Ghost Squadron and Killed in action when his bomber was shot down during a night raid in Frankfurt Germany and crashed near Florennes on July the 13th 1943. He was 23 years old.

Did you know Hutchinson Court in Summerside is named in honour of Flying Officer Pilot Gordon Frederick Hutchinson. He lived on Devonshire Ave. in London and graduated from South Collegiate. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1941, earned his Wings, and was a 30 year old pilot with # 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit in England when his Halifax aircraft # LL 417 crashed during training and exploded at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England on July the 2nd 1944. Flying Officer Pilot Hutchinson has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial at the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

As there are a lot of new families in Summerside we want everyone to be aware that the Summerside Community Club has once again booked complete use of Meadowgate Park from the City Sunday June 30th and that there will be a Fireworks Safety Area as shown, it will be roped off with caution tape. The soccer fields and area around them will be unavailable and off limits, sorry for the inconvenience. We please ask that everyone respect this and stay out of it as the fireworks display is being set up and later during the show for their safety. Parents and caregivers: Please make your kids aware of this.

The Thames Valley District School Board has acquired land for two new elementary schools and one is just outside Summerside (highlighted red on the map), the school board said both should open in September 2026.
