Yooo happy Saturday to you all & a massive thank you to everyone that showed up to our Open House All Week!! π«‘π«Άπ
As we look back at the last few days.. we're overwhelmed by the amount of love & passion we witnessed through the eyes of new students as well as returning families of the 519 community.
Our goal was (and still is) simple:
Make Hip Hop (art/dance/culture) Accessible for All in the Forest City π±π‘
What an incredible way to get us inspired to officially kick off Fall '24 SZN as we enter 5th year of 519SHH Operation π€
Big congratulations to our winners of the giveaway contest:
1. Paul & Janet - next season's tuition for Thane is on us!
2. Linda - let's start planning a visit to showcase the talents of 519 students at Evan's school!
3. Ella - welcome to London & we hope to keep seeing you join us for weekly training while you attend
4. Olivia - more 1v1 sessions scheduled for you!
We are so grateful to have everyone's support and can't wait to see what this new season brings us ππ
Representation is key ππ―
Meet the team behind the 519 operation that is in charge of running our Kids, Juniors, Seniors, Teens & Adult program π«‘
We represent and embody the lifestyle of a b-boy, Hip Hop head, a lifelong fan, and most importantly, STUDENT of the Culture. π
Oftentimes, we're referred to as teachers, coaches, mentors, choreographers, etc..but I (JFX) personally resonate the most with the title 'Student' π
Mostly because this mindset encourages and welcomes others to practice some humility as they come to participate. The act of dropping the ego, in order to allow ourselves to learn without much prejudice or bias. Of course, we teach steps and moves, and we coach on the technical training as well. But you can't earn yourself the title of a teacher without being a student first. π
Stay Hungry & Stay Humble
Each One Teach One
Teach the Culture, not just the dance
Always a Student. Never a Master
Welcome to 519. We can't wait to level up with you π±ππ
Good morning London! π

You're looking to learn about Hip-Hop dance?
Then let's start there and acknowledge that Hip-Hop is a Culture, not a dance. π―π’
Dance education does offer a lot of value in developing physical literacy, creating connections between our emotions and music, and serving as a physical outlet.
But once you open up yourself to the idea of becoming a student of the Culture, it'll teach so much more. π
I strongly believe that this method of teaching Hip Hop from a cultural perspective should be FUNDAMENTAL when you take on the responsibility of "hip hop dance teacher" - learning and sharing the history, traditions of the lifestyle that evolved out of the oppressive state of Bronx, NY in the early 70s.
If you've never cared to understand the struggles and the origin stories of the street culture, "teaching" your version of trendy, hypersexulized & watered down moves only does more harm than you realize.
Cultural erasure and whitewashing of historical significance are often times subtle..and will rarely get called out because it's usually protected by the systems upholding the colonized mindsets, rooted in anti-blackness.
At 519, we are big-time believers of "practice what you preach" and we're still learning, after all these years.
We hope you're ready to learn with us and make some moves for a better future π±π³π«‘
Happy Monday & we have exciting news for you! π’

Fall '24 SZN OPEN HOUSE π₯βπ½
This September, we enter 5th Fall SZN π«‘ππ as we welcome new faces into the community and welcome back those who were taking the summer off! π₯
It's surreal, when we look back at the humble beginnings of 519SHH..it's always felt like pure survival mode. Pandemic opening.. lockdowns (too many to remember) and all the fun things we'd normally be doing out in the community, that we just didn't get to do in our first couple years of operation. βͺοΈ
But this season, we're focusing on GROWTH to show the world that our way of fostering Hip Hop community (Culture first, youth at the front) is thriving, and we're here to elevate the game! π±π
Please join us on Tuesday-Friday (Sep 3rd-6th) before our Fall SZN officially kicks off on Monday, September 9th, as we open doors to everyone wanting to check us out! Come for a mini tour & a free sample class ππ«Ά
6 PM / Kids!
7 PM / Teens!
8 PM / Adults!
Meet the teachers, try some graffiti, learn about DJing and why not throw down some moves with other students & parents of 519 π€π
Lots of giveaways to be announced as well - Free 1v1 training packages, Free tuituon for the whole season, Free school visits..and more! πβπ½π
Do you see any familiar faces? π
1 week from today - we'll be in Sarnia, ON!

We're incredibly grateful for the support of communities in & outside of London. The educators and parents that understand the value of Cultural education that should be added on top of the dance when it comes to learning Hip Hop!
It's a CULTURE. Not a dance βπ½

If you're about it.. you see through the BS and do what you can to protect the Culture, while trying to preserve the Essence.
And the Essence can only be accessed by tapping into the source.
That source is not the mainstream media.

You Canβt Kill Breaking Because Breaking WONβT DIE!! Online DJ School and Community by DJ Rob Swift
Community has a voice π
Corporate media has πΈ
We're trying to educate ourselves and uplift the Culture.
They're trying to erase the cultural significance and heritage.
You choose what speaks to your soul π€π
Uninformed can be bad..but being misinformed is worse. π
Some things to consider as we continue to be hit with waves of meme-ified content misrepresenting Hip Hop culture and Breaking as an artform (or sport).
Happy 51st birthday to Hip Hop (if you count Aug 11, 1973 as the official inception of this Culture) πβ¨οΈπ€
We're here to do what's needed in this world.
Inspire the next generation, and help equip them to build a better future. ππ
There are plenty of culturally-rooted dance crews & organizations all across the globe doing good work to continue building up our platform as Hip Hop continues to face challenges. But traditional media will not feed you that content. It's always going to require a critical eye to go the distance and gain that cultural currency.
We hope you're ready to learn.
We're still learning π«Άπ±π―
Uninformed can be bad.
Being misinformed is worse.
This is why education matters..including unlearning & dismantling personal biases and years of conditioned ways of thinking/speaking/doing.
Aside from the obvious physical training as kids want to learn more about breaking, we'll be stepping up our efforts to drill down on these topics/issues:
1. Digital/Media Literacy π
Don't buy into everything you see/read online. First doesn't always mean facts. Do your own research and form an opinion based on what you LEARN to discover, instead of what the masses are saying π
2. Cultural Foundation βπΎ
You wanna be part of/make comments about Black & Brown culture (Hip Hop, breaking, etc)? Learn the history, know the negative impact of things like cultural appropriation, erasure and misrepresentation. π
3. Find & Feed your Passion π₯
We saw it happen - a b-boy from immigrant parents with a dream of making it as the TOP Olympian, just by being dedicated to his craft and maintaining his artistic integrity, while being authentically himself every step of the way.π₯
4. Accountability for Educators π
If you have any power or influence on your peers (kids & adults, too), please help ensure that the CULTURE of Hip Hop and its origin stories as well as the great lessons are also being taught and passed down, instead of just picking up some quick "breakdance moves" online to teach your students to save yourself $$. Gatekeeping is what stunts prosperity and we want our youth to be well-informed on the past so that they can create a better future for the next generation. π±
5. Accessibility for Arts Education πΈ
Whether it's at a dance studio or a rec centre or in a school...we need to do better to ensure that something like dance is more universal and accessible to more families. Especially when we talk about street dance, it is NOT a luxury and should not be exclusive to those with privilege. We'll be offering regular free workshops for the community with those willing to work collectively, and I'm confident that we'll see a difference, starting in the local scene in 519. βπ½
Thanks for reading & supporting π«Άπ
