Heritage is very pleased to be working with the Town of Lunenburg to install 41 large-caliper street trees.
Our crew is currently working their way across town planting red maples (Acer rubrum), Scarlet Jewel maples (Acer rubrum Scarlet Jewel), sugar maples (Acer saccharum), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), pin oak (Quercus palustris), column oak (Quercus x warei Regal Prince), and ornamental pear (Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer).
Special thanks to the Nova Scotia Government Beautification and Streetscaping Program, and to AVK Nursery Holdings Inc. for supplying big, beautiful specimens. Credit to Jeremy, Daniel, Frank, and Bruno for their work on the project.

With a fresh truckload of trees, shrubs, and perennials from AVK Nursery Holdings Inc. we are well into our fall planting run. Now is a fantastic time for dividing and transplanting, as well as new installations, and there's nothing like a few hours work in the garden to drive the chill out of the mornings.
In this clip, Daniel, Jeremy, and Jim are unloading calliper trees meant for various clients and the Town of Lunenburg tree planting program. These are big trees, weighing 125-250kg (300-500 pounds) each, meant to kickstart the urban canopy renewal within the town.
For the homeowner, calliper trees add summer shade and fall colour, attract birds, increase happiness (growing research shows trees improve our health and happiness), and sequester carbon slowing climate change. Trees are also a great way to mark special occasions like a birth or milestone anniversary or to serve as a memorial.

Hi friends. An important message from the Town of Lunenburg regarding defoliating ash trees. Arborists have climbed trees in six separate locations to take samples and have determined it is a fungus that's causing the dramatic leaf drop, not the Emerald Ash Borer.
What do you do? The best thing to do is cleanup all the downed leaves so there isn't a medium to harbour the fungus. That's it. The trees should be able to heal themselves. They will be re-checked this fall and again in the spring to see if the Town needs to take further action.

PSA: PLEASE DON'T CUT DOWN YOUR ASH TREE
Your tree may look dead or struggling, but it can recover!
The Town of Lunenburg is working with professional arborists to inspect/monitor the condition of the trees. White and Black Ash trees are being affected by a fungus that can correct itself.
Green and Mountain Ash do not appear to be affected. To date there are no signs of the borer insect that have damaged trees elsewhere.
Back away from the chainsaw... and give your Ash a chance.
Never under estimate the stamina it takes to be a landscaper! Our construction team held out until late afternoon, but no wind, high heat, hot machines, and stone will take it out of the best of us.
It takes grit, determination, strength, and endurance to get through the long days and highly physical work of landscaping, and our maintenance crew is just killing it this year! Rain or shine they are out there pushing, pulling, prodding, and pruning properties into glorious shape. There’s an extra thrill this year since many of our clients will be returning to for the first time since 2019. Thank you to Patsy, Megan, Breanna, Matt, and Jared for your commitment and attention to detail.
We're excited to be using a new product that hits the middle ground between traditional segmented block retaining walls and commercial sized units. Siena Smooth designed by and manufactured by is a sleek, contemporary machine-installed block that is engineered for a completely vertical installation.
Credit to Jeremy, Brandon, Derrick, and Cameron for their work on this project.

A great shot from one of our Chester properties. Moody skies and a dazzling Malus Selkirk Crabapple from AVK Nursery Holdings Inc. Developed in this crabapple is extremely hardy. The reddish-purple blooms emerge before it’s dark purple leaves. The small, red ornamental fruit persist into winter, making them an ideal natural food source for overwintering birds. In 2019 tore down a large number of trees on a Heckman's Island property. In a lemons-to-lemonade decision, the homeowner had a local mill cut the downed trees into rough lumber. In May, our team set to work constructing a boardwalk that meanders through the trees and provides access to the beach and finishes where we've just sowed a , , and . Thank you Brandon, Jeremy, Derrick, and Cameron.
