Rising Tide Nursery
A native plant nursery specializing in coastal and salt marsh species for environmental restoration
A few weeks ago, 50 plug sized pots of Spartina pectinata were shipped off to support a living shoreline project in Pictou Landing. This project aimed to restore a beach to provide coastal habitat, wave attenuation, and will allow the shoreline to respond dynamically to sea level rise in the future.
We are very happy to see our plants supporting local projects!

Snails and slugs have been a major pest here at the nursery! They have been deterred using copper wire, but unfortunately resulted in a roughly 40% loss of our Spartina alterniflora seedlings. As we face challenges such as this, we continue to learn and adopt best practices to be able to offer healthier plants.
Pictured here is the snails in the Blackgrass, though it didn’t seem to bother them much!
Seedlings, seedlings, and more seedlings!
We have been working hard to transplant the wide variety of seedlings here at the nursery to support local projects. Over the winter we have propagated halophyte species such as:
- Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora)
- Salt marsh hay (Spartina patens)
- Prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata)
- Saltgrass (Distichlis spicata)
- Beach pea (Lathyrus japonicus)
- Sea lavendar (Limonium carolinianum)
- Black grass (Juncus gerardii)
- Sea plantain (Plantago maritima)
- Seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens)
- New York Aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii)
- American beach grass ( Ammophila breviligulata)
- American lyme grass (Leymus mollis)
and more!
