Happy Monday. We'd just like to remind you that if you get some tickets before 11:59pm, you're automatically entered in the $1,000 early bird draw.

Below are eight new pagers we purchased thanks to your support in the weekly 50/50. We also updated our existing portable radios and pagers to move us away from using dialup paging as our primary method of paging. This change improves our pager range and also allows us to be stack paged (paging multiple departments at once vs one at a time) with our neighboring departments on mutual aid calls.

Thank you once again for your support and thank you to Nova Scotia Firefighters 50-50 and Rafflebox

Oh boy - how was your weekend?!?

As some of you may know, we had an almost worst case scenario incident here at Scotia Business Centre Sunday night. A large truck struck the communications lines in front of our building and ripped them out of the building entirely. What you see in the photo below is the aftermath. We were left without telephone or internet service entirely and as a result, had no way to answer calls - a dire situation for a business such as ours. This is not a post about being broken, however. This is a post about the numerous agencies that came together to support us until we were back up and running.

The first huge thank you must go to the Bridgewater Police Service - particularly Sgt. Mitchell. He arrived on scene quickly and made sure things outside were secured. Thankfully, our radios remained functional throughout this disaster, allowing Sgt. Mitchell to keep in contact with us and allowing us to monitor communications between agencies relating to the unfolding situation. Sgt. Mitchell thought fast in a very chaotic situation and for that, we are extremely grateful.

This brings us to our second huge thank you. Valley Dispatch jumped in immediately and offered to notify all PSAPS of the situation, providing them with the temporary number to call with any emergency calls. This meant our ability to take and dispatch emergency calls was back up and running almost immediately. Valley’s kind offer of help enabled us to focus on calling Bell to ask for a technician to come out and see what could be done to repair the damage as quickly as possible.

While we were waiting for Bell to arrive, the difficult decision was made to partially evacuate to our backup site, Bridgewater Fire Station, for the first time since the last test of the emergency site was done. This is our fourth huge thank you - the Bridgewater Fire Department, especially Chief Michael Nauss and Deputy Chief Andy Wentzell. They were ready and willing to help us get set up and offered any additional support needed. Their kindness in welcoming us into their station was much appreciated and will never be forgotten.

It then came time to start making the hard calls to our telephone answering service clients to inform them of the situation. It is not easy to tell a client we’re unable to do what is required of us. Our goal in all things is to always be as helpful as possible and due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to achieve that goal. This is our fifth huge thank you. We have never been more thankful for the clients we have - the very new ones or the ones we’ve built relationships with over the course of several years. While some were concerned about the calls they would not be getting, every client understood it was beyond our control and were as understanding as possible considering the circumstances. For your patience, support and understanding, we are endlessly grateful.

A sixth huge thank you goes out to all of the people that checked in with us to make sure we were doing okay and asking if we needed anything. Peter Tanner with LMR Communications offered help and checked in multiple times throughout the duration. As always, Peter was willing to help us out with anything we needed although our radio communications and paging systems were still functional - perhaps a testament to Peter’s ability to think ahead, especially by setting up two backups for his LMR repeater so we have two failsafes in place to page the departments that rely on the repeater for their emergency pages.

Our final thank you is to the staff members who dropped everything to rush in to help and apologies to the two staff members who had absolutely no idea what was going on until they woke up to the news Monday morning but came in for your shifts anyway, knowing it was going to be a very different but stressful day.

All of this started around 9pm on Sunday and we were fully operational again by Monday at 7pm. The help and support of Bridgewater Police, Bridgewater Fire, Emergency Measures and Valley Dispatch made this incredibly stressful situation a lot easier to deal with. And to our clients, endless thanks for your patience and understanding.

EDIT: It was called to my attention that I forgot to thank three extremely important groups. First, the Bell technicians! Their quick response gave us the ability to get back to work less than 24 hours after the trouble began. Next, a big thank you to Dayspring Electric for making sure there was an electrician there to do the work that needed to be done before Bell could even get started. Finally, thank you so much for the traffic control professionals who came out in the cold to make sure everyone stayed safe. I am positive I've forgotten someone incredibly important. Please don't be insulted. We're all tired and frazzled and so many people worked so hard to get us up and running.
