When deciding on the best type of vision correction for your child, you have options to consider. In most cases, glasses would be the first choice, and these would be worn according to the recommendation of the optometrist that prescribed them.
However, does your child find that wearing their glasses during sports or dance is an inconvenience? You may want to consider contact lenses for them. It has been shown that children younger than 12 years of age report better vision-related quality of life when wearing contact lenses compared to glasses.

Good vision provides a head start for learning. Parents are encouraged to help improve their child’s school success with a visit to their optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam.
BC Doctors of Optometry recommends children receive their first eye exam when they are six to nine months old, with a follow up exam at least once between the ages of two and five, and then yearly once they enter school. The comprehensive eye exam helps to ensure that a child who cannot see properly gets treatment as early as possible, ensuring that poor vision doesn’t lead to poor academic performance.
Parents can also help set their children up for overall success by limiting screen time. High screen time use in children can result in delays in critical cognition, learning and social skills in younger children. Screen time should be limited to zero for infants and toddlers up to two years of age, no more than one hour per day for preschool children and ideally no more than two hours per day for school aged children.
Set your child up for success and visit your optometrist today!

When a child wears special Ortho-Keratology Contact Lenses overnight their cornea is molded into a new shape which allows them to see clearly without wearing glasses or contacts during the day. Even more important, O-K lenses reduce the progression of myopia, which reduces the risk of serious eye diseases later in life. Ask your Pacific Eye Doctor today.

September is National Guide Dog Month
CNIB has some simple etiquette tips for when approaching guide dogs:
1) Harness on means hands off. A guide dog in harness means "Please don't distract me, I'm working."
2) Don't feed them, especially when guide dogs are working in harness. Offering food can result in antisocial behaviour such as begging and scavenging off the ground.
3) Contain your excitement. Don't encourage excitable play. Guide dogs are given access to public places where other dogs are not permitted, so they must stay calm.
4) Say "hello" another time. If you're walking your pet dog and you notice a guide dog pair, steer your dog away from the guide dog.

: Rabbits are prey animals. They have nearly 360° panoramic vision, allowing them to detect predators around them from all directions. Rabbits are able to see everything behind them, and only have a small blind-spot in front of their nose. Their eyesight is geared towards detecting movement at great distances, however, so their up-close vision is limited. Whilst a rabbit’s vision is good, their sense of smell is even better. They will likely be able to smell a predator before they even have a chance to see it.

This is a perfect time for Canadians to get a comprehensive eye exam to ensure optimal eye health and vision for themselves and those they love. It is one of the least invasive steps you can take to protect your overall health. The comprehensive eye exam can help an optometrist identify underlying health conditions, including early warning signs of diseasess such as hypertension, high cholesterol, vascular disease, thyroid disease, brain tumors and diabetes.
•
You can have 20/20 vision and also have an eye disease. An optometrist evaluates a number of factors that determine your vision and eye health and then makes recommendations for treatment.

Very young children with myopia don’t know that there is something wrong with their eyesight and generally lack the communication skills to explain vision problems to their parents. It’s therefore important to pay close attention to your child in their early years, and schedule regular eye exams for them with your Doctor of Optometry. The great news is, we now know how to reduce the progression of myopia and can recommend interventions that work. Book an appointment today to find out how.

September calls for back to school and your child may need updated glasses or contact lenses to help with their learning.
When deciding on the best type of vision correction for your child, you have options to consider. The first choice would be glasses but many children as young as 8 years old can also be very successful contact lens wearers. Special glasses and contacts even reduce the progression of your child’s myopia. Be sure to ask about those.
At Pacific Eye Doctors we have endless choices for either eyeglasses or contact lenses that will help correct your child's vision.

: Scientists estimate that falcon vision is eight times better than humans'. This allows the birds to spot small prey from two kilometers away, and then swoop down precisely to catch it. Evolution has worked its slow magic on the falcon eye to make it so useful. These birds have an extra eyelid that moves from side to side and is partially translucent, allowing them to see through it while still enjoying its protection. They also have a ridge over their eyes to shade them from the sun, and special bones in their skull to keep the eyes in place when making sudden moves.

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), observed annually on August 31, is a campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind. This year’s theme, “Together we can,'' highlights the strength that comes from coming together and standing in support of those connected to the tragedy of overdose. For people who use drugs and those who don’t. For heartbroken friends and family members of lost loved ones. For activists who fight for sorely needed policy reform. For healthcare and harm reduction workers. For tireless advocates. Overdose can affect anyone, and we encourage you to remember the tenacity of our community. Lean into the power that we can have when we work together. Together, we can end overdose.
Reach out and connect with others in your local community and join the global IOAD movement today!

We have great news! We are now offering our patients the Macumira treatment, Canada’s 1st clinically proven and Health Canada approved TREATMENT FOR DRY AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION!
Macumira uses painless microcurrent therapy delivered across closed eyelids to stimulate cells, improving cellular function and clearance of waste. A clinical study completed by Coquitlam ophthalmologist, Dr. Kevin Parkinson, showed that those treated resulted in vision, on average, that was a full two lines better on the acuity chart compared to those not treated. That’s a very big difference.
Keep in mind that individual results vary. For some the results are small and for others they are life changing.

Hyperopia is known as farsightedness and is when distant objects are easier to see than near objects. This happens when the length of your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature.
Many people have hyperopia without knowing it. Symptoms like blurred vision, eye strain, poor reading, maintaining a clear focus and headaches send them to their optometrist who then diagnoses hyperopia
Mild hyperopia can be treated with part time corrective lenses and in more moderate cases your optometrist may recommend glasses or contact lenses for full time wear.
For more information, call or book an appointment online today!

: When an onion is cut, the onion’s cells are sliced open. The gaseous substances released by the cells are made of sulphur compounds. When this gas makes contact with the tears, it is changed into sulphuric acid, which irritates the eyes. The eyes produce more tears in an attempt to both dilute and wash away the irritant.
