In light of the Provincial Shutdown announced today by the Ontario Government, we would like you to know that we will remain open with infection prevention and control measures.

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday. Some fun foot facts you may not know.

Q: How many bones are there in the foot?
A: There are 26 bones in each foot, totaling 52 bones in our feet which is about a quarter of all the bones in our bodies.

Among the 26 bones there are 33 joints, 19 muscles, 10 tendons and 107 ligaments. As you can imagine there is a lot going on in the relatively small space, especially since our feet support our entire bodies. Each foot takes up to 1.5 times your body weight during walking and between 5-8 times your body weight when running.
Did you know that when we are born, the bones in our feet are mostly cartilage and this is why most babies and toddlers have flat feet. Around the age of 4-5, the arch will form as feet muscles develop. Until the early teen years, the feet continue to grow on average of about a size per year.

Q: What is the strong tendon in the body?
A: The Achilles tendon (the tendon connecting your calf muscles to the heel bone) is the strongest tendon in your body.

The calf muscle is used for walking, running and jumping and the achilles tendon has to withstand the forces we put it under, especially when running and jumping. The calf muscle pump is also crucial to help blood flow back up to the heart from the extremities.

Q: Why are our feet so ticklish.
A: Feet are one of the most ticklish parts of the body because humans have nearly 8000 nerves in our feet. Also most of the nerve endings are near the skin. If you have ticklish feet it may just be a good sign that your nerves are working well!!

People with diabetes can experience peripheral neuropathy, damage to the nerves causing a lose of sensation in the feet. It is important to understand how your feet are functioning and if you are not feeling pressure or pain it can lead to callusing and worse ulcerations.
