As the summer comes to an end and school is beginning, it’s time to start thinking about a healthy back to school routine. Taking care of your child’s teeth is an important part of the routine. Research shows “poor oral health can mean missed school and lower grades.”

Tooth decay is preventable, but continues to be the most chronic disease in children.

A dental infection and pain can cause problems with your child’s daily activities, such as sleeping, eating and learning, which can lead to a not fun school year. Start your child’s school year off right with these 8 helpful tips.

1. See the Dentist
Set up your child’s next dental check-up. A check-up will ensure a healthy start to the school year.

2. Establish Healthy Habits
Make sure your child is brushing 2 times a day.

3. Don’t eat after brushing teeth
This is especially important before bedtime, as salivary flow decreases while they sleep and teeth become more vulnerable to cavities.

4. Use Fluoride toothpaste
Kids over the age of 3 can use fluoride toothpaste. If your child wont spit, or eats the toothpaste, only use a rice grain amount. Once your child can spit, only a pea size amount of toothpaste is needed.

5. Eat Nutritious Foods
Encourage healthy eating. Tooth friendly snacks include fruit, string cheese, vegetables, unsweetened applesauce and nuts. Avoid sticky foods, such as candy, fruit roll ups, and granola bars. These foods stick to teeth surfaces and cause decay.

6. Don’t nibble food or sip continuously
Allowing time between snacking and sipping allows saliva to neutralize acids and repair teeth.

7. Drink Water
Choose water for your child instead of drinks sweetened with sugar. If your child wants a sweeter drink, try adding fresh sliced fruit such as lemons or strawberries.

8. Ask About Sealants
Dental sealants can also protect your children’s teeth from cavities. Sealants, which are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, act as a shield between the tooth and harmful bacteria.

Also please do not forget to wear a mask, wash your hand and maintain social distancing at school. We hope that you have a safe school year.

WHAT IS A CROWN?
A crown is a dental restoration otherwise known as "cap" which is covering that fits completely over a tooth. Crowns in general add a good deal of strength to weakened or worn tooth as well as improve its appearance, shape and alignment.

WHY IS A DENTAL CROWN NEEDED?
A dental crown may be needed when at least one of the following occurs:
* To protect a tooth weakened after Root Canal treatment
* To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
* To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left
* To hold a dental bridge in place
* To cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth
* To cover a dental implant.

If you are interested in having a crown, please do not hesitate to contact us at 905-270-4788 to book for a consultation.

GUM ( Periodontal) Disease

Most people don't realize how common periodontal disease, or gum disease, is.

In most cases, periodontal disease does not cause any pain and goes unnoticed. However, early detection and treatment are important for preventing irreversible damage, such as tissue and bone loss.. Periodontal disease happens when bacteria in plaque builds up and irritates the gum tissue, leading to inflammation and infection. The gum pull away from the bone and teeth lose support.

Some warning signs of periodontal disease may be:

* Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
* Red, swollen or tender gums
* Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
* Bad breath that doesn't go away
* Pus between your teeth and gums
* Loose or separating teeth
* A change in the way your teeth fit together

It's important to make regular dental visits and to brush and floss between your teeth daily to prevent gum disease. Please contact our office at 905-270-4788 or [email protected] to schedule an appointment. We'd like to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime.

Do you wake with dull headaches, vise-like pain,or sore jaw muscles?

If so, you may have BRUXISM, a habit of teeth grinding or clenching.

The fact that many people are unaware they even do this because it often happens while they are sleeping.

So what causes bruxism?

Stress, sleep disorders, an abnormal bite, or crooked or missing teeth may cause bruxism. Teeth grinding can cause pain or loosen teeth. Patients can actually grind away parts of their teeth , leaving them with worn surfaces or fractured enamel. Bruxism can not only wear down your teeth and damage dental work, but can also cause aching muscles.

Do you experience those problems ? If yes, we would like you to share with us !!

Luckily, treatment for bruxism and any damaged teeth is available. Leave us a comment or schedule an appointment today to talk with us about your symptoms and possible treatment plans at 905-270-4788 or [email protected].

As always, we look forward to providing you with outstanding dental care.

FUN FACT TODAY !!!

Do you know giraffes only have bottom teeth? This is why it looks like they have such a big upper lip.

Just like humans, giraffes have 32 teeth, but most of them are positioned in the back of their mouths. They use their lips and 20-foot long tongues to grab leaves and twigs and grind them up with their back teeth.

We all know soda is good tasting but do you know those facts about soda?

_ People who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have 62% more tooth decay, fillings and tooth loss than others.
_ There are 10-12 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of soda. _ The sugars in soda combine with the bacteria in your mouth, forming an acid that attacks the teeth. Each time you take a sip of soda, you’re starting another acid attack that will weaken your tooth enamel.
_ These acid attacks are especially harmful for kids and teens because their tooth enamel is still developing

If you’re going to enjoy an occasional soda, or any other acidic beverages, there are things you can do to minimize the damage to your teeth

_ Drink soda all at one sitting, and preferably with a meal. Don’t sip it over a few hours, because that exposes your tooth enamel to an acid bath for a much longer time period.
_ Try using a straw. It may protect the front of the teeth somewhat, but overall, it’s not a huge help.
_ Rinse your mouth with plain water after you finish the soda or any other acidic drink. Swishing with milk works, too. Milk has a higher (less acidic) pH to neutralize acids and may even help with remineralization.
_ Wait at least an hour after drinking soda to brush your teeth. Brushing too soon harms your acid-softened tooth enamel.

Do you know?

Implants are cylinders that are inserted surgically into the jaw where they serve as an anchor for replacement teeth. After a period of time, the implant eventually fuses to the bone in your jaw where it is stable and comfortable. Crowns that are attached to implants look and feel like natural teeth. ☺️

Dental floss can get annoying when it is constricting the blood flow in your two little fingers...
BUT
Flossing doesn't have to feel like a chore. There are other alternatives, like floss picks, which are inexpensive and can be purchased at your local dollar store!

And I know you've heard it before, but there are many benefits to flossing.
For instance, women who are pregnant are more prone to gingivitis because of their hormones😫.

All you got to do is floss ONCE a day to keep the plaque away😎.
