šŸŒŸ Meet Paul and His Family
This year, Paul (pictured on the left), joined by the Alzheimer Society Peelā€™s Advisory Panel for People with Lived Experience (APPLE), walks in honor of his mother, Sharon (pictured at the right), a vibrant soul recently diagnosed with Vascular Dementia.

šŸ”¹ A Family's Journey
Sharon, who always lived by the motto "Laughter is the best medicine," has faced significant changes since her diagnosis. Despite these challenges, she retains her optimistic spirit, especially when her children, Paul, Lianne (pictured second from the left), and Julie (pictured third from the left), visit her in long-term care.

šŸ”¹ Goals for the Walk
Paul's primary aim is to spread knowledge about dementia. "People donā€™t know what they donā€™t know," he remarks, hoping to illuminate the signs and symptoms of dementia and the available support networks. Despite a recent setbackā€”a broken toeā€”Paul is determined to reach the finish line, fueled by the collective energy and progress the walk symbolizes.

šŸ”¹ Strength and Awareness
"There is strength in numbers. It helps bring more awareness to the cause," Paul shares, committed to contributing to this wave of positivity and advancement, even with his injury.

šŸ”¹ Remembering Who She Is
Reflecting on his motherā€™s vibrant past, including her fulfilling career with the Peel Regional Police, Paul emphasizes the importance of seeing beyond the illness. "It is important to recognize her soul and beauty through the illness. Sheā€™s still her," he insists.

šŸ”¹ Support and Improvement
Having experienced substantial support from community agencies, Paul is motivated to enhance these systems further. As a member of APPLE, he's focused on acknowledging the strengths and addressing the gaps from a caregiverā€™s perspective.

šŸ”¹ Advice to Care Partners
Paul advises other caregivers to deeply understand dementia, which he found crucial in navigating his motherā€™s behavioral changes more compassionately. "Learn about dementia... Itā€™s a win-win for both the person suffering and for the caregiver," he advises.

šŸ”¹ Self-Care Reminder
Lastly, Paul reminds fellow caregivers, "Take part in the community. You matter too."

šŸŒŸ Meet Jasmine and ASP's APPLE Team
This year, Jasmine, alongside our Advisory Panel for People with Lived Experience (APPLE), takes strides in memory of her late father, Ramadan, and in support of her mom, Marija, both profoundly touched by dementia.

šŸ”¹ Why We Walk
Jasmine steps forward with a heartfelt mission: "I walk because I would love to see a cure." Each step symbolizes hope and a push for greater awareness of dementia's signs, akin to the widespread recognition of stroke symptoms.

šŸ”¹ Exceeding Expectations
Starting with a humble goal of $500, Jasmine quickly surpassed this thanks to the overwhelming support from donors who shared their personal stories. "It speaks volumes about how widespread dementia is and how deeply it affects us all," Jasmine reflects.

šŸ”¹ Honoring Memories
In remembering her father, Jasmine focuses on the cherished memories of who he was throughout his life, despite the challenges of dementia. "I try not to think about the hard times," she admits, choosing instead to honor the person he was.

šŸ”¹ Community and Support
"Thereā€™s much room for improvement in support for people living with dementia and their care partners," Jasmine states, aiming to be at the forefront of advocating for better services and support structures.

šŸ”¹ A Message to Care Partners
"Youā€™re not alone. You may feel like it, but youā€™re not," Jasmine encourages. She highlights the importance of talking, finding resources, and maintaining social ties for well-being.

šŸ”¹ Call to Action
Jasmine urges everyone, "Check in on your loved ones and get involved with advocacy. Together, we can make a significant impact."

Meet Malkit and her family, a vibrant group unified by love and a shared mission. This May, they're lacing up their sneakers not just for exercise, but for something far greater. They walk with a purpose ā€” to honor, remember, and fight for a future without Alzheimer's disease.

šŸ”¹ Why We Walk
"Our family walks for three main reasons," Misha shares, her voice a blend of resolve and warmth. "First, to let others know they're not alone in this struggle. We've felt the sting of loss, the clutch of helplessness. We walk to educate and empower those facing this journey."

šŸ”¹ A Cure on the Horizon
"We also walk to raise funds for crucial research. Witnessing our grandma Malkit's decline was heart-wrenching," explains Anshu, Malkitā€™s daughter-in-law. "No one should endure such a fate. By funding research, we hope to find a cure and halt the progression of Alzheimer's."

šŸ”¹ A Tribute of Love
"Lastly, this walk helps us cherish and remember Malkit's undying love. She remains the center of our universe, and we, her little planets, continue to orbit around her love," Misha adds with a smile. "It's a way for us to grieve together and find joy within a community that understands."

šŸ”¹ Family Voices
Kulwant (Son): "I walk to keep the memory of the good times alive, despite the ups and downs."
Prathiba (Daughter-in-law): "Raising awareness about Alzheimerā€™s is critical. We need to spot the early signs and learn about prevention."
Sumit (Grandson): "Her personality stayed strong; she was always funny and loving. We walk to slow Alzheimerā€™s progression and give others a chance at living purposefully."
Raj (Daughter): "I wish we knew this info so that we could have educated our mother and saved her brain from the damage."
Priya (Granddaughter): "This walk honors my grandma's bravery. It's a step toward a cure, fueled by love and memories of her strength."
Nikki (Granddaughter): "I walk to support those suffering, acknowledge their journey, and uplift their caregivers."
Sheetal (Daughter): "I walk together with family members to share their grief, talk about momā€™s memories, it's like emotional healing. Walking together for this cause is a way to pay tribute to our mom and keep her memories alive."
Shruti (Granddaughter): "I am walking in honor of my late grandmother. Although this is a heartbreaking disease, I will always cherish the beautiful moments we shared, when her face would light up with joy upon remembering that I am her granddaughter. I hope that every step we take brings us that much closer to finding a cure for Alzheimer's."

šŸ”¹ A Legacy of Love
"Each step we take is a testament to Malkitā€™s enduring spirit. Through our walk, we bind together, celebrating her life and the values she instilled in us," says Samir, another proud grandson.

šŸ”¹ The Impact of Community
Sangeeta (granddaughter) adds, "The walks bring us together, strengthening our family bonds and deepening our commitment to this cause. Itā€™s about more than remembering; it's about active engagement in a community striving for change."

šŸŒŸ Join Us
"We walk for Malkit, and we walk for you," Misha concludes, inviting everyone touched by Alzheimer's to join their journey. "Together, we can make a difference. We walk to educate, to raise funds, and most importantly, to keep the memory of our loved ones alive. Letā€™s walk toward a future where no one feels alone."

Feel free to share this post, join us in this yearā€™s walk, and help us spread the word. Together, we can face Alzheimer's with strength and love. ā¤ļø

Itā€™s me again - Caroline Cameron from Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey on Sportsnet. Together with the Alzheimer Society, I'm on a mission to spread awareness about brain health and dementia.

Today weā€™ll explore the power of physical activity for a healthier mind.

In hockey, most of the hard work is done outside of the game. From on-ice workouts, to dedicated cross-training, stretching and recovery work, your favourite NHL playersā€™ routine is built to optimize mental clarity while preparing their bodies to last.

You donā€™t need to workout like a professional to get the same benefits. Being active isn't just about scoring goals or hitting personal bests, it's good for your brain.

Everyoneā€™s different, so itā€™s important to listen to your body and find activities that feel good for you. Let us know your favorite ways to stay active in the comments!

If youā€™re interested in learning more about keeping your brain healthy, here are some resources to help: https://alzheimer.ca/en/about-dementia/how-can-i-reduce-risk-dementia/brain-healthy-tips-reduce-your-risk-dementia

Iā€™m Caroline Cameron, host of Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey on Sportsnet.

This January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and Iā€™m excited to team up with the Alzheimer Society to spread awareness of a very personal cause - brain health and dementia.

A decade ago, my now late Grandma Shirley was diagnosed with vascular dementia. We were very close, and her diagnosis was a difficult for all of us.

Suddenly my family and I became a part of my grandmaā€™s life in a way we hadnā€™t been before. It was challenging for her and for us, adjusting to a new reality, but I quickly learned how helping with little things like laundry or just keeping her company was the best way to support her new normal.

Read my full story here: https://alzheimer.ca/on/en/OurConnectionsMatter

I look forward to the month ahead as weā€™ll explore together the power of prevention and why taking care of yourself and your brain is so important.
