Novah Healthcare
An integrated team with extensive experience treating the physical, psychological and social aspects
Our approach is to make a person aware of the physical, emotional and interpersonal factors that affect their pain and function and to provide them with strategies to deal with the barriers for them to participate in activities of daily living and work.
Beginnings can be daunting. But with less judgment, we can nurture a higher quality of life for everyone.
With the beginning of a whole new year ahead of us, many decisions and unknown possibilities, it often feels like a fork in the road plagued with dualistic judgment. Good or bad. Right or wrong. Healthy or unhealthy. At Novah Healthcare, we encourage you, and teach you how, to look beyond this judgment so you can figure out what works best for YOU.

Many of us may feel the New Years pressure, from ourselves or others, to achieve every goal and new habit all at once. While goals are a wonderful thing to embrace in life, remember to also embrace balance and patience!
With balance, we understand that our well-being and overall sense of resilience includes trade-tradeoffs; every habit comes with pros and cons, it's up to us to decide what is ultimately best for us. Cutting out all your coping strategies immediately will likely result in an unsustainable level of stress. Leading us to the other important factor, patience! Real, lasting change takes time.
Wish everyone a safe, healthy and meaningful New Year from Novah Healthcare

Prioritizing self care during the holidays can be quite a challenge. For some, it can also feel selfish at a time defined by the spirit of giving. But this is an important reminder that our individual and collective resilience, our health and wellness, is highly shared and interrelated. When one of us prioritizes self care, many others will likely benefit. Just as well, when one of us takes far more than gives, those resources are drained from others.
The holiday season is a great opportunity to put this awareness into practice. To do our best not to judge those who are less fortunate. To share our resilience resources without overextending ourselves. To practice methods of self care without shame, in the spirit of giving and cultivating a connected environment for those around us.
Wishing all a safe and meaningful holiday from Novah Healthcare!

What is grounding? How can we learn this skill? Although this word is often misused in terms of forcing calm, positive emotions during times of stress — Grounding is actually about learning how to connect your body and mind back into physical, temporal reality. Here and now. Using our 5 senses.
Rather than forcing a sense of safety and calm during moments of legitimate threat — grounding helps us feel safe when we are triggered in moments that are actually non-threatening.
By learning how to ground yourself, by learning how to be more aware of and present in our daily experiences, we unlock vast potential in learning how to healthily respond to what troubles us VS constant reactivity.

We are often told to "just let go" and be happy... but HOW? While letting go may sound simple, it is often very confusing to know how, and difficult to actually do it. What are the mechanisms involved in the act of letting go? These are skills that CAN be taught and learned.
At Novah Healthcare, we focus on understanding these mechanisms so that you can develop those skills and build resilience. We want you to live a life not limited by your pain.

If we were to think of life and resilience as a game, using a round of poker as our analogy — your internal resilience resources would be your hand of cards, (purpose, beliefs, flexibility, openness, etc). Your external resources would be your stack of chips, (finances, support, community, etc). And the environment that affects your capacity to be resilient, to utilize these resources well, would be the community cards.
The question is... are you optimizing these resources? It can be all too easy to forget or neglect the things which support our resilience in life, internal and external. At Novah Healthcare, we help you identify them, learn the skills to optimize them, and how to apply them in your own life in a way that's unique and meaningful to YOU.

Resilience comes from within, and without. Internal and external factors and resources. Why is this so important to understand and embrace, not only as an individual but also as a community? One big reason, is because these resources are finite. We can overextend ourselves and become depleted, and we can share them with each other. Another important reason, is that once we become aware of these factors, identify these resources in our own life, then we can begin to develop our web of support, our toolbox of resilience.

Trust in one of your deepest strengths of all: to be present, to be wakeful.
At Novah Healthcare, we redefine what it means to be resilient as "conscious resilience." Not just grit or perseverance or attitude or force — but a learned and developed skill through which we can observe ourselves and the world around us.
With awareness, we can begin to identify that which makes us resilient, and that which makes us vulnerable. We can begin to choose what matters most to us, what deepens our quality of life.
Without this kind of awareness, we are merely pushing our way through life, denying ourselves meaningful experiences, and likely becoming reactive against all the signs and messages our body is trying to send us.

What is the difference between hopes, dreams... and expectations? Can you distinguish how you feel them? And how their outcomes unfold?
Hopes and dreams make us feel excited and motivated. While expectations often cause us to feel anxious and disappointed.
With awareness of this crucial difference, we can then free ourselves to choose which of them aid us more on our journey through life.

Connecting with your body. Feeling into those sensations, pleasant or unpleasant. Creating space to accept them as they are, free of judgment. Recognizing them as perfectly natural responses to our life experiences. And cultivating curiosity, even fascination with these moments of awareness — This is what it means to build conscious resilience.
Rejection or heartbreak, for a vivid example; you may find your chest or throat tightening. Your shoulders rounding inward. Your gaze sinking low toward your feet. Your stomach bitter or knotted. However you might describe this feeling — see how easy it is to judge as bad, disappointing, as something to fix or correct quickly.
Shift your perspective so that you view the moment from outside yourself, so you can see yourself as a "third person." Imagine how a curious reaction might look instead. How does it effect the processing of the emotion? Does it enhance your quality of life? Does it help cultivate a less reactive situation for everyone involved?

The cultural ethos of "life can be exactly as you want it!" is akin to "you can win the lottery!"
The probability of winning the lotto 6/49 jackpot is 1 in 14 million. While the odds of being struck by lightning are 1 in 3000. Needless to say... incredibly unlikely.
In terms of stress, overall wellbeing, and quality of life, this idea that life can be exactly as we want it, is ultimately a toxic and harmful message for us to live with. Not only does it pressure us to control outcomes, but it leads to a zero sum game where very few of us succeed and many perpetually take from the rest.
The probability is that you're not likely to win the lottery in your lifetime. Do you have the resilience resources and skills to be okay with this? To live a full life not limited by your pain, expectations or need for more?
At Novah Healthcare, we treat physical and mental health conditions by helping you to build resilience.

War, like chronic disease, doesn't happen overnight. It starts with an inherited legacy that predisposes us to preconditioned perspectives and behaviours. Acting on these biases leads to reactions that reinforce our intolerances so what begins as a slight discomfort becomes an unbearable tension.
Eventually, this becomes a blinding rage that only seeks to destroy without discerning target or collateral. War is like a disease that's full manifested and at this stage, there is no longer a rational entity or simple solution. Logical discourse will not sway the rage but vitriol WILL cause it to spread.
With all the conflict in the world, there is an opportunity to see this important parallel between disease + war. Both are best approached by stopping the spread, cultivating awareness and understanding of root causes, and building resilience to be calm in the chaos or unbearable tension. The best thing we can do as individuals, is to stop the spread.
The beauty of resilience — Everybody has to walk a journey in life. At some point in that journey, we'll have to climb a mountain.
There are going to be situations and challenges that force us to reconsider the status quo, reconsider who we are and how we deal with things. And when we get to the top of the mountain, it's not about saying my path was the correct one or your path is the wrong one. It's about saying, oh that's interesting what you did. And let me learn from your path.
We see beyond that mountain, to the lakes and the rivers and the forests and other mountains we may want to climb next. We may dread the process, but we know what it's like when we get to the top. And so when a person gets those different perspectives, they see much more clearly, their perceptions of things change.
At Novah Healthcare, this is what it means to treat physical and mental health conditions by helping you to build resilience.

The actual "finish line" of our lives is always "here and now."
Yet our culture deludes us into believing there is a finish line: "life as it should be," off in the obscure distance. Since we've made this our goal, life becomes a race. Go faster! Work harder!
We begin to perceive others as "ahead" or "behind" us, resulting in jealousy, contempt, judgment, stress, etc. Furthermore, this race causes us to constantly redline our vehicles (damaging ourselves), cut off those behind us, and crash into those slightly ahead (damaging others).
Physical and mental chronic health conditions are amplified, exacerbated, and often even caused by this cultural ethos. At Novah Healthcare, we see this all the time. And we help treat your pain, by first building awareness around how these types of cultural pressures might be affecting you and your loved ones.

How you get there, may determine where you finally arrive. Meaning, if we force oversimplified or speedy solutions, if we white-knuckle our way through change without understanding our body's needs, or if we rely on the same coping strategies our whole lives... this rigid definition of resilience can lead us into more pain and frustration.
Resilience science tells us that a few of the most important factors are curiosity, openness and flexibility. If we are open and flexible to experiencing life as it unfolds, without needing specific outcomes to feel secure or successful, we can then lean on a host of skills and strategies to improve our quality of life.

Every choice is a trade-off. Meaning, there is often something positive AND negative that comes from any habit, choice, or outcome. There’s no such thing as perfect.
In our culture, we tend to rigidly label everything as “good” or “bad,” right or wrong, healthy or toxic… and so our unhealthy addictions, habits, patterns, coping strategies, etc. are often demonized as behaviour to fix or stop immediately. But why are they there in the first place? Maybe they provide comfort or relief from your struggles.
Take excessive social media use for example; an addiction that often deters from our mental health and overall wellbeing, but also may give us a sense of connection with others, self-expression, or even just an escape from life stressors. If this is the one thing that's preventing your life from falling apart, maybe quitting cold turkey may not be the best course of action at this time.
This is not to justify unhealthy habits, but to say that we shouldn’t be too quick to judge a habit since it is likely to be helpful to you in some way. We need to understand HOW it is helpful to you, and then find other resources to substitute it.
If we can become more aware of these trade-offs or behavioural bargains that we make every day, then we can cultivate our capacity to make a conscious choice in the transaction. And choice = freedom and more control in your life. If you’re trying to improve your quality of life, remember that how you get “there” determines where you finally arrive.

Part of the "skill of life" is to know how and when to ASK for resources, or GIVE yours to others so that you can feel a sense of fulfillment and connectedness while avoiding depletion.
Often, this can feel like a tightrope balancing act. But always, it requires listening to your own body. And this is a skill well-worth learning.
Enhancing your resilience requires you to drain the resources of other people. While people-pleasers avoid taking resources / support from others and wind up constantly drained themselves, others wind up just taking. Both strategies are harmful to oneself and the community.

Just a few toxic messages embedded in our culture that stand in the way of our quality of life. By no means is this list exhausted... both western and eastern cultures, modern and traditional alike, are rife with these toxic notions.
The word toxic may be misused, overused, or seem harsh in many contexts. But regarding our health and quality of life — we treat countless people at Novah who suffer from chronic conditions that are heavily aggravated and magnified by the stress of these cultural pressures. The first step in confronting these ideals... is becoming aware of them and their influence on our lives, individually and collectively.

If you see your life and your path and your condition in a very specific way, and all you want to do is get back to the way things were — you can lose the opportunity to experience something that could be even better. It cannot be overstated how important it is to practice openness and flexibility in treating chronic conditions.
So whether it’s back pain, any bodily pain, mental health struggles or a chronically felt sense of pressure or stress that is detracting from your quality of life — we will help you THROUGH the real cause of your problems, with openness and flexibility, rather than moving AROUND it by treating symptoms with temporary bandaid solutions.

WHY do you have chronic pain? Because there is an ongoing threat in your life.
Pain is a signal that you are being threatened in some way. The threat can be physical:
• There might be scarring, tightness, weakness or imbalances in your body
• Bad movements, postures, sleep or diet could be aggravating these physical problems
Or the threat can be psychological:
• You might be reliving trauma from your past
• You may have poorly controlled mood and emotions
• You may be struggling with fear and anxiety
Or the threat can be environmental:
• The physical places where you live, work and play may be unsafe or toxic
• The people surrounding you may feel threatening
• You may be a target of injustice or discrimination
• You may feel high stresses from the expectations of your culture
• You may have stresses from a lack of time, energy or money
So the question remains, what is threatening in your life? Most likely, you’ll have more than one source of threat. Contact us at Novah Healthcare to learn more. Now accepting new patients! For a free consultation call us today +905 848 6682

Do you feel safe within your own body and environment? Or does it sometimes feel like this picture?
In our cultural conversation around resilience, we often hear about a hardened mindset or sense of grit to push through difficulties... but the science and research tells us a much more complex and compassionate story...
In order to develop real resilience in life, we NEED to learn the language of our body, establish a sense of safety from within AND in our environment, and last but not least — patiently cultivate and practice techniques just like learning any other skill in life.
Knowing this will help us as a society not to judge ourselves, each other, or our experiences so harshly — which keeps us trapped in the burning blaze that is chronic pain, trauma, or other difficulties.

RETHINK YOUR PAIN > rather than ignore it or mask it with bandaid solutions.
Because the mind and body are highly interconnected, pain tells you that something is wrong. Maybe scar tissues are limiting your movements. Or you might think that you’re never good enough. Or you don’t feel valued at work. Over time these threats will create negative changes in your body and mind. Medications can only give you temporary relief because the problem is still there.
Rethinking your pain involves highly individualized, no-nonsense, longterm solutions to the root cause of your problems, not the just the symptoms.

Welcome to Novah Healthcare
Dr. Trung Ngo, DC, founded Novah Healthcare in 2017 to continue the work he was doing at Mount Sinai Hospital - treating pain within an integrated team approach.
Our team has extensive experience helping and learning from people with complex, chronic, non-cancer pain. Through our experience, we have gained a great deal of insights into empowering people to re-take control over their pain and lives through 3 avenues: 1) Learning how to properly utilize the body (this includes how to move it, how to balance activity and rest, and how to nourish it); 2) Learning how to manage thoughts and emotions; 3) Learning how to manage relationships with oneself and others.
Pain can impose severe limitations on a person's daily functioning. At Novah Healthcare, we understand that pain is multifaceted. Factors that can cause and perpetuate pain, in addition to pathology, include an individual's thoughts, emotions, interpersonal relationships and physical movements.
By assisting a person to become aware of these various aspects of pain and by providing them with strategies to manage acute and chronic pain, Novah Healthcare empowers people to transcend their functional limitations.
At Novah Healthcare, we wish to share our knowledge and experience with you in the hopes that this information will help you, your family and friends or your clients.
