Do West Fest is the unofficial start of the summer. A massive street festival extending 16 blocks along Dundas St W. in the heart of Little Portugal. ☀️🍹

I will be at Taste of Little Italy along with and . This is another street festival with live performances, extended patios, carnival rides, good food and good fun!!! 🎠🍝

Save the date for June 23-25, because I also applied for and we are crossing our fingers that I’m taking part of their Street Fair this year. You’ll be the first to know 😝

I’m just very excited for all of the upcoming events this year. I’ve been really missing seeing and chatting with you all in person. I feel incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to showcase new and old illustrations with so many folks! 🥺

Breaking down the bank bu****it! As a small business owner, watching what is going on is super scary. Both Faire (a wholesale site for small business) and Etsy (a retail site for small business), used Silicon Valley Bank to process payments for their customers; small businesses like myself.

Meaning…when a business makes a sale on these sites, they get paid out through this bank that collapsed.

I assume most people know that the money you leave in a bank isn’t really “there”. It doesn’t sit there REALLY. Banks take your money and invest it. This is how they make money. Your bank account accumulates a low interest rate and their investments yield them a higher rate, usually. SVB mainly dealt with corporations and startups, like Etsy and Faire.

Well, SVB invested about half of their deposits over the last few years, into long term mortgage securities. Which maybe would have been fine if it wasn’t for the huge interest rate increase over the last two years on mortgages. This may also have been fine if they could have let this money sit there until rates evened out.

But the money they use isn’t theirs right? Companies started to withdraw their money. Faster than what SVB assumed, likely due to economic instability. So the bank had to sell their assets being held in securities at a loss, a huge liquidity problem. Thus, they were purchased by the bank at all time lows and now being sold at all time highs…
That and the good old fashioned rumour mill, caused their stock to tank. Stock holders started selling off stocks when they heard that SVB was trying to raise cash by selling stock.

This is some shady business on behalf of banks. After 2008, you would think mortgage securities wouldn’t be the best place to raise some money. And it’s hard to say, don’t bail them out to teach them a lesson. But it also affects many people, not just big time investors… Companies who hold their money with these banks use that money for payroll, which affects the every day working person just trying to earn a living. The real trickle down economics.
