Our April General Meeting is on Thursday, April 4 at 7pm, in-person and via Zoom (for business portion only)
Our guest presenter is our very own Helia Safaee
Artist Bio:
I discovered pottery as a creative outlet when I was in undergrad, studying engineering. My course load was all-consuming and didn't leave a lot of room for me to explore other interests. Once I discovered pottery though, I was obsessed, and squeezed every minute of free time I had while doing graduate school, moving across the US for internships, or while working full-time in different cities. In fact, it's been a consistent thread in an otherwise changing career path. I am currently the Class Coordinator at Mississauga Potters' Guild. Previously I have been a member of the Irvine Community Art Center in Southern California, the student-run Elliot Program Center at Stanford University, Mudflat Studio in Boston, and a student at the Living Arts Center in Mississauga where I first discovered pottery with Ishrat Suhrwardy (A previous MPG member).
I often use pottery to create a canvas for my etchings and create things that I think my friends and family would enjoy. There is still so much for me to explore in material, technique, and avenues of self-expression with pottery. That’s why I’m always excited to come across new artists, new hobbyists, and new studios and learn from their unique approach to this versatile art form.
I look forward to sharing my pottery journey with you, especially my most recent trip to Korea as part of the Canada-Korea Ceramic Culture Exchange Workshop run by Unha Hill.
We're less than a month away! From delicate jewelry to adorable critter mugs, there's something for everyone at the sale 🦝

Our guest presenter is Andrea Vuletin
Artist Bio:
I am a mid-career ceramic artist. I also strongly believe that we are a part (often dysfunctional) of a global ecology. For many years I have been creating highly decorated functional ware that celebrates small parts of the natural world at hand.
My wheel-thrown work is covered with images of local flora and fauna using a fine line mishima technique and soft colour palette on white porcelaneous clay. The feelings conveyed by it are delicate, warm and cheerful. It is for me, a comforting nostalgic ode to elements of nature that are just outside my door and to the home and gardens of my mother and grandmother.
Though I love to make and decorate this work it feels like an incomplete way to express my ideas of late. The emotions of living during a pandemic and the resulting need to develop awareness and skill to move on and flourish have been a primary concern pushing aside my usual sentiment. The extended periods of social distancing and seclusion left a void. That void was at once a challenge mentally and an opportunity for reflection, exploration and growth. Moodiness and volatility persisted along-side lightness and joy creating a teeter-totter of emotion. Balance was illusive. Identifying emotions and their source helped point the way to modes of expression. It is this need that led me to my new body of work. I have chosen new clay, different building and decorating techniques and a more dynamic visual language. This has expanded and reinvigorated my creativity.
Going forward I will continue to develop this newer dramatic body of work, but also produce the earlier soft botanical body of work that I so love as well; swinging back and forth towards feelings of balance.
