Have you recently faced a job loss?
You need to read this: ⬇️
A former candidate of mine reached out to share that he had been laid off from the company where I placed him as an account executive eight years ago. When I asked how he was handling it, he admitted it was challenging, but he valued the experience he had gained. He views this as a time of transformation, believing that when one door closes, another opens. His perspective is all about turning discomfort into strength and moving forward, trusting that everything happens for a reason and that the universe doesn’t take away anything that is truly meant for you. I absolutely love this positive outlook and philosophy!

In an interview, a candidate asked the hiring manager what their expectations were for the new sales manager, and the response was "perfection." The candidate found this reply off-putting. While it's reasonable to strive for high standards, expecting perfection from a human is unrealistic. What are your thoughts on the employer’s response? Would this be a red flag for you?
Why You Should Think Twice Before Accepting a Counter Offer from Your Employer
Sure, receiving a counter offer can be flattering—it's like a grand gesture from an ex trying to win you back. But before you get swept off your feet, think about the long-term consequences. Accepting that shiny counter offer can strain trust with your employer; they might start seeing you as a flight risk, making your future with them shaky at best. And let's be real—counter offers are usually about keeping you around, not helping you grow. That short-term pay bump won't magically align with your career dreams. Remember the reasons you wanted to leave in the first place? Spoiler alert: a counter offer won't fix the cultural fit issues or lack of motivation. Plus, playing the counter offer game can tarnish your reputation, making you look indecisive to future employers. And don't forget about your personal growth—new opportunities challenge you, expand your network, and boost your confidence. So, while that counter offer might seem like the perfect solution, pause and consider where you really want your career to go. Sometimes, the best opportunities are outside your current office walls.

Professional Communication: Don't Slack Off!
As a recruiter, I get bombarded with messages from social media, email, and text. And let me tell you, the lack of attention to grammar, precision, and overall writing quality is seriously eye-rolling. Messages in all caps, inconsistent capitalization, and casual expressions like "Yep" or "like how good does my French have to be?" It's a major pet peeve because I'm here to find the best candidates. Professional communication skills are a must for making a great impression. So, remember, you're not chatting with your buddy or mom—take the time to communicate professionally. It can make or break your chances of getting an interview. Honestly, it triggers a stress response in me.
My Journey to Owning a Successful Recruiting Business
Success often comes from unexpected places, and my journey is proof of that. Dropping out of high school wasn't part of my plan, but the traditional path didn't resonate with me. I faced criticism for my decision but knew I needed a different route.
Eventually, I earned my GED, reigniting my passion for learning. I enrolled in university, but the program wasn't the right fit, so I dropped out again, determined to find a better path.
I took a job as a recruiting assistant, which was supposed to be temporary. However, I quickly realized I had a knack for it. I loved connecting with people, understanding their strengths, and helping them find the right opportunities.
My passion and expertise in recruiting grew, leading me to start my own business. It wasn't easy, but my unconventional journey taught me resilience and adaptability. Now, after twenty years, my business thrives. I have helped thousands find their dream jobs and partnered with numerous companies to meet their staffing needs.
Lessons Learned
✨It's Never Too Late: You can always get back on track.
✨Follow Your Passion: Loving what you do makes hard work worth it.
✨Embrace Uncertainty: Success often comes from unexpected paths.
✨Believe in Yourself: Confidence in your abilities is crucial.
My story shows that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to career growth. Success can come from the most unconventional paths, and sometimes, the journey itself makes the destination rewarding. 💫

Stuck in a Career Rut? Time to Embrace Change!
Today, a candidate told me, "I’m too old school to make those changes." Well, guess what? That inspired me to write this post. If you think you can resist change and still get ahead, think again. Here’s some tough love: if you’re not willing to adapt, you’re going to stay stuck exactly where you are.
Why Embrace Change?
1. Personal Growth:
Want to grow? Step out of your comfort zone. Break old habits. Take a course, start a hobby, or travel. Sticking to your old ways is a surefire way to stay stagnant.
2. Career Advancement:
Old-school job search methods? They’re outdated. Update your resume, learn new skills, and network creatively. Adaptability makes you attractive to employers and opens up new opportunities.
3. New Experiences:
New experiences enrich your life. Try new technologies, meet new people, explore new places. Every new experience brings fresh perspectives and opportunities.
4. Avoid Obsolescence:
The world changes fast. Stay relevant by embracing change. Don’t get stuck in the past.
5. Unlock Potential:
Change is full of potential. Embrace it with a positive mindset to unlock opportunities you never imagined.
Final Thoughts
If you want to get out of your current job and find something better, you need to embrace change. Holding onto old ways will leave you behind. Adapt, evolve, and watch your opportunities grow.
Ready to embrace change? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments. How have you adapted and succeeded? Let’s inspire each other to keep moving forward!
What to Do When Your Work Bestie Quits and Leaves You Behind
Losing a close colleague can feel like losing a part of your work family. If your work bestie has moved on to new opportunities, it's natural to feel a mix of emotions. Here are some steps to help you navigate this transition:
Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s normal to feel sad or lost. Take a moment to process the change.
Celebrate Their Success
Celebrate their new opportunity. Organize a small farewell to show your appreciation.
Stay Connected
Plan regular catch-ups outside of work to keep your friendship alive.
Expand Your Network
Get to know other colleagues better. Join new projects or social groups at work.
Focus on Your Growth
Use this time to focus on personal and professional growth. Take on new challenges and seek learning opportunities.
Find a New Routine
Establish new habits to restore a sense of normalcy. Find new lunch spots or hobbies.
Seek Support if Needed
If you're struggling, talk to a trusted colleague, supervisor, or a professional.
Embrace Change
Be open to the new dynamics and possibilities that come with change.
Remember, it’s okay to miss your work bestie, but it's also an opportunity for growth. Keep an open mind and heart, and you'll navigate this transition with resilience and grace.
As a first interview question, the hiring manager asks you to tell a joke? What joke would you tell?
New week, new challenges, new career opportunities!
Wednesday Wisdom: A few observations from this week that could enhance your job search or overall personal branding and professionalism. Let's level up, folks, and strive to be the best version of ourselves. ⬇️
1) Refrain from calling me "bro" or addressing me with "Hey" - I'm a 52-year-old recruiter. Just say hi and call me Melanie.
2) Ensure your email on your resume is correct - attention to detail matters. How can people reach you if your contact information is wrong? Let's raise the bar here.
3) Your LinkedIn profile is your professional image - avoid pictures that could be misconstrued, like ones from a night out or with your significant other. Let's maintain a professional appearance.
4)Typos on your resume are a red flag - with tools like spell check available, there's no excuse. Attention to detail matters, and typos indicate a lack thereof.
5) If you're no longer interested in the interview process, have the courage to say so - disappearing without a word is unprofessional. Remember, you can run, but you can't hide.
6) While perseverance is admirable, repeatedly calling me in a single day crosses the line into stalking territory. If I don't answer, I'm likely in a meeting. I promise to return your call as soon as possible - I never leave people hanging.
Don't hesitate to reach out if you need more tips or someone to review your LinkedIn and resume. I want nothing but success for you. Let's elevate our professional game together.
