Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc.’s 1999 annual loan exhibition honoured the achievements of the Beaver Hall Group women painters Emily Coonan, Nora Collyer, Prudence Heward, Mabel Lockerby, Mabel May, Kathleen Moir Morris, Lilias Torrance Newton, Sarah Robertson, Anne Savage, and Ethel Seath. The exhibition was originally launched in conjunction with the release of Dr. Barbara Meadowcroft’s "Painting Friends: The Beaver Hall Women Painters."
Our family is committed to supporting the Beaver Hall women and has hosted individual retrospectives for many of the artists as part of our broader efforts to help enhance the public recognition of these underappreciated artists.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the exhibition, and to reaffirm our family’s commitment to promoting the legacy of these artists, we are relaunching the exhibition virtually. This initiative draws from our archives, incorporating the original photographs and titles assigned at that time. Many of the paintings viewed here have not been exhibited publicly since 1999.
Alan Klinkhoff Gallery specializes in the purchase, sale and appraisal of works by members of the Beaver Hall Group.

🖼️ Chantale Jean, Cellule familiale. Acrylic on canvas. 40 x 48 in (101.6 x 121.9 cm) 🖼️
📍 Currently on view at our Montreal gallery.
Chantale Jean, a self-taught painter from Charlevoix plays with imagination. Her unforgettable images invite us to share her deep respect for nature and for animals.
Jean creates a world of fantasy where, like a Lafontaine fable, her creatures hold court, revel and gather around festive tables... Mesmerized by a parade of geese or the dance of tufted ducks cavorting on a pond, Chantale Jean highlights both the strength and the frailty of the worlds around us. Each painting is a “silent poem”, beckoning the viewer to enter “her world”. If her tale is unvoiced, the artist is anything but silent when it comes to expressing her admiration for nature and her commitment to defending it; through her paintings, she openly criticizes a world which would destroy the beauty and colour of nature in the name of profit.
Her works are filled with a sense of humour. The pleasure she gets from directing her “budding actors” is palpable. The unpredictable textures of her paintings and the marriage of figurative and abstract motifs infuse her works with an element of surprise which prods the viewer to go beyond the experience of the artist. Her eccentric palette enhances the plasticity of her paintings and throws the viewer into the unpredictable scenarios she creates. Each theatrical painting stages a play with a colourful cast and extravagant titles, reinventing the world she begs us to discover.
Chantale Jean was born in La Malbaie, Charlevoix, Québec, and resides on the Montmorency River, near the Montmorency Falls.

🖼️ Sam Borenstein, “Winter, View of Lake Paquin, St. Agathe”, 1964. Oil on board. 36 x 48 in (91.4 x 121.9 cm) 🖼️
📍 Currently on view at our Montreal gallery.
In “Sam Borenstein” (1978), Kuhns writes that in the period of the 1960s, "Borenstein achieved a fresh exuberance - the tumult and exhilaration he had been reaching towards for decades emerged, his paintings burst with gusting energies, which it seemed he had tapped for the first time. Perspective, scale, line, and form, the rudiments he had mastered over thirty years of painting, became seething, elusive elements of a tumultuous vision: a storming of whites and blues, in which a familiar landscape rippled, quaked, and roared from within. His landscapes became portraits of a force as elemental as his own urge to paint; landforms, trees, buildings, and streets, were whipped into a hurricane of colour, fixed somehow painfully, somehow exuberantly, to the canvas. Borenstein's work reached the zenith of intuition and technique he had struggled with for thirty years, and at the age when most artists begin to ease and relax, Borenstein worked more fervidly, more excitedly than he had ever worked before. His confidence in himself, never doubted but never so certain, became a further prod."

🖼️ Claude A. Simard, "Still Life with Flowers", 1992. Acrylic on canvas. 36 x 42 in (91.4 x 106.7 cm) 🖼️
📍 Currently on view at our Toronto gallery.
Claude A. Simard, RCA, was an artist of great talent. Unabashedly, he was a painter of beauty and joy that he found in numerous forms. The Simard’s gardens, first le Jardin du Bon Accueil at their home in St-Foy and then also at the home on Lac St-Joseph provided important sources of composition. Not the most ardent fan of winter, Claude brought his interest in flowers indoors where he painted a strong body of still life.
He was born in Quebec City in 1943. He graduated in 1966 from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Simard was elected to be a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1981, the very year that he had his first of 5 exhibitions with us at our original family art gallery, the Galerie Walter Klinkhoff.
Claude was an inspiration and mentor to many art students who took his courses at Université de Laval. As importantly, for me personally Claude and his wife Huguette, were good friends.
